Gastritis arising from liver transplant

Gastritis is a common health complaint in many people. In simplest understanding,

Gastritis is a condition in which the inner lining of the stomach gets eroded, leading to
chronic bloating, acidity and bloody vomit. There may be multiple causes of gastritis
like, chronic vomiting, overuse of anti-inflammatory medication like Aspirin, alcohol
abuse, infections caused by H.pylori bacteria and infections. However, one of the most
serious conditions is known as bile reflux.

Bile reflux is the backflow of bile into the stomach. The bile tract is a passage
connecting the stomach to the liver and gallbladder. Bile reflux may turn out to be a
serious consequence of liver transplant. Bile or bile juice is a digestive liquid produced
in the Liver. While it plays an important role in digestion, presence of the juice in the
stomach for too long can prove hazardous, owing to its slightly alkaline nature. Since
bile reflux cannot be controlled through changes in the diet, medication becomes
necessary, and in some cases, even surgery. Complications related to the biliary tract
are some of the most serious complications or side-effects of liver transplant.
When liver transplant is the only option as part of end stage liver disease treatment,
despite the improvements in processes, gastritis caused by bile reflux remains a
common cause of morbidity. Treatment for such conditions is also provided as part of
liver disease treatment in India.
