PARAGRAPH 1

Once upon a time, a brilliant student of a reputed Physics Institute started delivering Physics lecture to
his fellow classmates out of generosity (I seriously doubt this) so that they can cope up with the
difficulty of the subject. Out of many, only one cared to join his class. Due to lack of space, he held his
class in the open sky at 8 in the evening every Sunday. During one of his class, he was showing his dear
friend two stars P & S. Using one of his many magical ways (for which he was famous among his batch
mates), he was able to find the ratio of the wavelength of the light corresponding to maximum intensity
emitted from the two stars as

Using one of his another magical ways (he had many), he was able to find that the root mean square
speed of the molecules of both the planets is the same. He again used his magic to find that star P is
made up of molecules similar in structure to that of carbon dioxide and star S is made up of molecules
similar in structure to that of water. Again by his magic, he found that the diameter of star P is 4 times
that of star S After his lecture, he posed two questions to his so called student. His so called
student charmed by the magic answered the questions correctly. Using the information in the paragraph,
guess the answers

17. Choose the correct option(s)

(A) The ratio of the average molar mass of molecules on star P to star S is 4.
(B) The ratio of temperature of the star P to star S is 1/4.
(C) The ratio of the intensity of light emitted by the star P to the star S is 1/256.
(D) The ratio of the intensity of light emitted by the star P to the star S is 1/16.

18. Choose the correct option (s) ( Note that the stars are home to super power nuclear fusion reactions
due to their extremely high temperatures)
(A) The ratio of internal energy per mole of star P to star S is
(B) The ratio of internal energy per mole of star P to star S is 3
(C) The ratio of the power emitted by star P to that emitted by star S is 1/16
(D) The ratio of the power emitted by star P to that emitted by star S is 1/4 .

PARAGRAPH 2

A solid floats or sinks in a liquid depending on whether the solid is lighter or denser. The mass of liquid
displaced by the solid is equal to weight of the solid. However, the density of the substance may change
with change in temperature. Hence, the fraction of volume of submerged solid may change depending
upon the coefficient of thermal expansions.

19. A solid whose volume does not change with temperature floats in a liquid. For two different
temperatures of the liquid, fractions of the volume of solid remain submergedin the
liquid. The coefficient of volume expansion of the liquid is equal to
(A) (B) (C) (D)

20. A solid with coefficient of linear expansion just floats in a liquid whose coefficient of volume
expansion is . If the system is heated, the solid will
(A) sink in all cases (B) continue to float in all cases
(C) sink if 3 (D) sink if 3

Iron melts at 1811 K. Between room temperature and its melting point, iron metal can exist in
different crystalline forms. From room temperature to 1185 K, the crystal structure of iron
exists as a body centered cubic lattice known as -iron. From 1185 K to 1667 K, the structure
becomes face centered cubic and is called -iron. Above 1667 K and upto its melting point, iron
reverts to a bcc structure similar to that of -iron. The later phase is called -iron.

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon in which some of the interstitial spaces (holes) of the
crystal lattice of iron are occupied by small atoms (carbon). In a blast furnace, the
melting of iron is facilitated when it contains 5.36% of carbon by mass. If this mixture is cooled
too rapidly, the carbon atoms remain dispersed within the -iron phase. This new solid, called
martensite, is extremely hard and brittle. Assume that size of the unit cell of this solid
(martensite) is same as that of -iron (bcc).

(A) 7.8 g/cc (B) 8.84 g/cc (C) 7.24 g/cc (D) 8.48 g/cc

20. Cu exists in FCC unit cell (radius of a Cu atom = 170 pm). When it is mixed with BCC iron at 293
K, an alloy is formed having BCC arrangement where Cu is present at the corners of a unit cell. The
