Software for Ship Design

The software systems for ship design form the cornerstone of our product range. These software solutions have
been developed and tested in a true shipbuilding environment, thus ensuring that they meet the real needs of
high-quality ship design and making them an ideal choice for professional designers and shipbuilders.

Right from the start, weve been committed to making 3D product modelling a standard in the ship design
industry. In line with this objective, weve developed a range of design systems with the topological NAPA 3D
product model as the core. This 3D product model is applicable in all of the NAPA software systems, both for
design and for operation.
NAPA for Contract Design

In the early design stages, its vital to obtain reliable and accurate information quickly. Its also essential
that extensive design changes to the geometry model can be made swiftly and easily, as needed. With
NAPA you can quickly and easily model surfaces and compartments into 3D, perform relevant detailed
analysis, make changes and re-evaluate the design to ensure that it is technically feasible and satisfies
the requirements of the nature, the ship owner, the shipyard and the authorities.
The NAPA system contains all of the functions necessary for the contract design of ships so that the
optimum design solution is obtained before the contract is signed. Some examples of the many functions
included are:

Hull form design

Compartments and internal geometry
General arrangement
Speed and power prediction
Hydrostatics and stability
Damage stability
Loading conditions and intact stability studies
Longitudinal strength
Weight and cost estimation
Required freight rate studies
Tank calibration and capacity tables
Freeboard and tonnage calculation
General purpose optimization tools
Drawings and documentation
Contract Design Made Easy with the Contract Design Manager
The Contract Design Manager application is intended for quick and easy creation of the whole 3D product
model with NAPA at an early design stage. The Manager provides a logical workflow for contract design.
The 3D product model created serves as the primary source of precise design information at stages
leading up to the contract.

The Manager works as a user-oriented, visual interface for NAPA and manages the extensive design
processes. Changes, adjustments and updates can be carried out easily with the Manager. All tasks, their
relative order, up-to-date status and dependencies can be seen at a glance. Relevant detailed analyses
can be performed and the feasibility of the design can be re-evaluated effortlessly, making the application
ideal for the early design stages.
Advantages
The key benefit of the NAPA system is the unequalled speed at which design variations can be
investigated and the final design accomplished. NAPA offers an integrated package with the wide variety
of applications needed in ship design. The outcome of the early design with NAPA can be further
developed in the latter stages of design, including meeting the final challenges of delivery and operation.

NAPA Hull Form and Performance

The NAPA system contains state-of-the-art tools for hull form definition and optimization. A true surface model of
the hull is created, avoiding old-fashioned techniques based on interpolation. NAPA brings the conceptual hull form
all the way to the production stage, including final fairing.

The hull surface is usually the starting point for any design and analysis done in NAPA, and forms the basis for the
compartment and structural models.

NAPAs topological approach to hull surface definition facilitates fast and easy design, and increases productivity.
NAPA supports several methodologies for hull design, including real 3D surface modelling, transformations,
parametric definitions and more. The unique NAPA hull design methodology allows better control and more
flexibility in the hull surface than other modelling systems while still maintaining the exactness needed for final
fairing work. NAPAs Open GL graphics and lighting, sectioning and curvature plotting tools allow the user to
quickly and visually evaluate the fairness of the hull.

Hydrodynamic Design and Analysis

Integrated performance prediction routines facilitate the evaluation of the hull design quickly in the early design
stage.

Power prediction, including model and full scale reference data.

Seakeeping analysis, 6. d.o.f. response in irregular waves, seakeeping criteria, downtime.
Manoeuvring simulations according to IMO resolution A.751(18).

Station keeping and other special studies.

Hull Form Optimization and CFD Analysis

More detailed hull design evaluation and optimization based on CFD is available entirely within the NAPA system.

Wave resistance according to an integrated CFD method.

Panel model generation and transfer to external advanced CFD systems.
Multi-objective genetic algorithms to handle any kind of optimization problem.
Optimization, parametric definitions and the hydrodynamics subsystems make NAPA one of the only, if not the
only, system which integrates all of the tools necessary for hydrodynamic design of the hull surface.
NAPA Steel

NAPA Steel is a unique system for early structural design of ships, facilitating a smooth transition from a rough
model to the level of detail needed for classification, including stiffeners, brackets, openings, seams, plates,
cutouts, corner notches and building blocks for production planning.

NAPA Steel is entirely integrated within the NAPA system. NAPA Steel takes full advantage of the topological
definition of structures and the NAPA product model approach to permit fast modelling during the early design
stages. The flexible NAPA product model allows rapid changes to the structural design, and provides all numerical
figures for the total optimisation of the structures.

Use of the 3D product model:

Structural design for classification

Cost-related information, e.g. weight, bill of materials, welding lengths and painting area
Production planning
Generation of drawings and visualisations
Export of the 3D structural model to outfit, classification and detail design systems, such as Tribon,
NUPAS-CADMATIC
Automatic FEM modelling and export to analysis systems, e.g. Nastran, ANSYS
STEP, IGES and DXF for linking to a wide variety of general CAD systems, e.g. AutoCAD
NAPA for Statutory Compliance

Through its extensive set of tools for designing and calculating stability and strength, NAPA offers comprehensive
functionality beyond the initial design phase.

The NAPA Manager automates routine tasks, such as calculation of probabilistic damage stability and generation of
statutory documents during the design process.

The NAPA system has been approved, and is continuously used, by the worlds leading classification societies and
maritime administrations, a factor which means a smooth approval process. Typical users of the NAPA Statutory
Compliance features also include shipyards and engineering companies. In addition, NAPA is one of the main tools
used by experts in the development of new stability regulations.
Main features of NAPA for Statutory Compliance are:

Intact and damage stability evaluation for all existing regulations

Generation of limiting GM/KG curves
IACS longitudinal strength
Shear force corrections
Inclining test
Grain stability
Offshore structure stability
Freeboard and tonnage
Automatic document generation
o Trim and Stability Booklet
o Damage Stability Booklet

The Leader in Stability Analysis Software

NAPA has proved its power and efficiency in the field of stability analysis. Thanks to the strong product model and
the extremely fast and accurate calculation engine, NAPA is the de facto standard for the shipbuilding industry.
NAPA includes a comprehensive stability criteria library covering a substantial portion of the existing statutory
requirements. In addition, criteria can be defined for any existing and future stability regulation.

Quick Stability Evaluation

A typical example demonstrating NAPAs quick design evaluation capability is the handling of flooding openings in
damage stability calculations. As the immersion of openings is calculated on the basis of stability results (except in
the case of progressive mode calculations, where the openings affect directly the stability results), no recalculation
is needed when openings are redefined.

This is illustrated in the following flowchart:

Changing of an opening, e.g. in MARPOL calculations immediately updates the output as the hydrostatics of the
damage do not change. The only action required is a little scrolling.

Everything in a Single Database

NAPA for Statutory Compliance extends beyond stability evaluations. Freeboard calculations according to the
Amendments to Annex B to the 1988 Load Lines serve as a good example. These calculations are easy to perform,
as the ship model already includes the input needed (e.g. bow height, length of superstructures and block
coefficient) as primary data.

NAPA Outfit
NAPA Outfit handles and organizes basic outfitting and machinery components and manages the related
information. The main function is to define the locations of outfitting components in the NAPA product model. The
principle is to keep the model as flexible and intelligent as possible. This way outfit modelling can be started at the
early stages of the design process.

The compartment arrangement defines the ship in terms of spaces. To the spaces, the structure arrangement
adds the shell, decks and bulkheads. The structural members of the main structures can be added in the NAPA
Steel system whereas NAPA Outfit adds objects inside the spaces, thus integrating these objects into the product
model.

One of NAPA Outfits central features is that the location of outfit components can be defined in relation to other
objects in the model. This functionality is called topology. Utilizing topology, definitions can be made without
knowing the exact coordinates. Furthermore, thanks to the adaptability of the model, the locations are
automatically updated changes are made to the main geometry.

The outfit components can, but need not, have a geometric shape. Without geometry, the objects can be used, for
example, for storing maintenance data of components or for other administrative purposes. For instance,
components can be sorted according to the compartment of their location.

The modelling functionality of NAPA Outfit allows the equipment to be handled with a degree of accuracy that is
sufficient for space utilization management. For this purpose, the geometry of the pieces needs to be modelled at
a sufficient level of detail. Normally, simplified representations are used, serving the need for identification of the
object in a plot and checking the space required.

The geometric modelling of these components can be done either with NAPA or by relying on externally provided
models. Equipment components can be used for visualization in a 3D form, or they can be included in
arrangement plans and similar drawings. The information can be used for producing reports of various kinds,
including weight and cost calculation.

External Modelling
For the actual 3D modelling of system components, NAPA supports a number of formats that can be used to
import component models from other applications. This integration has been taken furthest with the NUPAS-
CADMATIC (Plant Modelling and Piping Design Software) application.

Visualization
NAPA Outfit provides visualization tools in the form of OpenGL graphics for 3D. Various kinds of drawings are
provided for 2D. The systems table structure also supports different kinds of calculations and reports.

NAPA Emergency Response

NAPA Emergency Response (NAPA ER) is a powerful tool to help ship operators, national and coastal
administrations, classification societies and salvage companies quickly decide on the best recovery action when a
ship is in a hazardous situation.
Use of NAPA ER will allow the operator both to prepare proactively for damage scenarios, quickly test recovery
strategies and to provide positive leadership based on sound technical information.

Damages ranging from flooding to structural failure and groundings can be modelled efficiently. Initial loading
conditions can be imported from the ships Onboard-NAPA loading computer or quickly defined in the NAPA ER
user interface. Recovery strategies using any combination of techniques such as cargo transfer, shifting of liquid
loads, pumping, mass loading, over-pressurization and under-pressurization can simultaneously be analysed as
serial or alternative actions.

Different scenarios can be tested using a logical tree structure of dependent actions and the results for instance,
cargo outflow, stability, grounding force, shear force and bending moment can be studied throughout the tidal
range. Multi-objective genetic algorithms can be harnessed to quickly evaluate and optimize loading combinations
in order to achieve a desired floating position while keeping the ship within stability or structural constraints.

NAPA ER will allow the ship operator minimize economic and environmental impact in the event of an accident.
The NAPA ship model generated, whether during the design process, the plan approval process or for Onboard-
NAPA, can be used directly in this marine salvage engineering software package. Ship models can be stored locally
in the NAPA system and accessed through the intuitive interface.

NAPA ER is currently used by leading ship emergency response service-providers and ship owners.

All Oil Tankers and Barges of 5000 dwt and Above

In October 2004, the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 52) proposed amendments to
Regulation 26 of MARPOL 73/78 Annex I. These proposals specified that all new and existing oil tankers of 5000
tonnes deadweight and above should have access to computerized, shore-based damage stability and residual
structural strength calculation programs.

These proposals have now been adopted and will enter into force on 1 January 2007 as Regulation 37 of the
revised Annex I.

The use of NAPA ER will ensure compliance with these new regulations.
