Where can I sit the CAE exam? The paper-based exam can be taken in Veliko Turnovo, Sofia
and other cities in Bulgaria. The computer-based exam is only available in Sofia at the moment.

When can I sit the CAE exam? The paper CAE exam can normally be done in December,
March or June in Veliko Turnovo. The computer-based or paper-based CAE is available
throughout the year in Sofia.

How much does the CAE exam cost? The exam fee is 318-335 leva, payable to UCLES. The
course fee at the Real English School is 96 leva per month (16 hours), and the course book
costs 45 leva.

How long does the course last? Normally 9 months, but it depends on your level when you
begin the course.

How long is the exam? There are 5 parts to the exam. The Writing paper is 90 minutes (2
essays), the Listening paper is 40 minutes, Use of English (grammar) is 60 minutes, Reading is
75 minutes and the Speaking test is 15 minutes.

English What is the pass mark? You need 60% to pass the CAE with a grade C. Grade B is 75%, and
the grade A is 80%. The average grade of the five papers is calculated, and you do not necessarily

How long is the result valid for? Your CAE exam result is valid for life.

Why is the CAE useful for me? The CAE shows that you have a very good understanding of
spoken and written English, and that you can write effectively and discuss subjects confidently,
including topics which are unfamiliar. The CAE exam will be an excellent addition to your CV.

Passing the CAE will be proof that your level of English is higher than average. For many
universities, particularly in the UK, the CAE (or higher level exam) is an entry requirement.

How do I know if Im good enough to join an CAE course? If you have just passed the FCE
(/bg/exams/11-fce-information)then you will be the right level to start. If you havent been
studying recently, or are uncertain of your level, you are welcome to come to the school to take a
test which assesses your current level. We will then advise you on the most suitable course to

Is there an age limit for CAE exam candidates? The exam is suitable for anyone aged 14+.
We have CAE students of all ages, right up to retirees!

What sort of things can a person with C1 English manage? At this level, you will be able to
understand fairly complex texts or speech, including some idiomatic expressions. Youll be able
to understand a film in English without too much difficulty. Youll be able to write texts on any
subject with a high degree of accuracy, although probably not with perfect grammar, and youll
be able to speak fluently and effectively without struggling to express yourself.
