Online Literacy Assignment

The lesson I created was designed to help students understand that they cannot

trust everything they find on the Internet. In the lesson students are learning about the

five Ws and how they can help them determine if a site is trustworthy or not. This is an

important skill in it requires students to analyze and critically think about the information

and websites they come across when researching. The article, The New Literacies of

Online Reading Comprehension: Expanding the Literacy and Learning Curriculum,

supports this, writing, critically evaluating online information involves the ability to

read and evaluate the informations level of accuracy, reliability, and bias (Leu et al.,

2011). Another text, which was about teaching students to critically think on the web,

states, evaluation of online resources is one of the most essential strategies involved in

online activity (Castek, 2011). It is clear from research that children need to be able to

critically think and analyze websites.

When thinking about TPACK, I believe this lesson incorporates the pedagogical

side of instruction (PK) because the lesson has teacher modeling, guided practice and

independent practice. This gradual release process is shown to help students understand

and develop skills. This lesson has appropriate content knowledge (CK) in that it is

connected with second grade standards and was planned for second grade students.

Lastly, this lesson has appropriate technology (TK) incorporated and this lesson is

focused on teaching students to critical think on the Internet.

I connected this lesson to the Common Core Standard RI.2.1, which says, students

will ask and answer questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate
understanding of key details in a text. I like that I can easily connect the 5 Ws we learn

and practice in reading to 5 Ws that help students analyze online resources. The five Ws

are taught so thoroughly in reading that I believe students will catch on quickly. I will

say, if students struggle with doing all 5 of the W questions at once, the lesson could be

modified and broken down into numerous days in which I would focus on one or two of

the W questions each lesson. I also connected this lesson to Common Core Standard W

2.7, which says, students will participate in shared research and writing projects. This

standard connects because as students are learning the 5 Ws and participating in the

activities they are practicing the basics of researching. This will lead to students

researching a topic and creating a project along with paper on the research.

I connected this lesson to the ISTE standard 3, which says, students will apply

digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. The sub standard says, students

locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a

variety of sources and media. It is clear in this lesson students are learning how to use the

Internet to find trustworthy websites. They are learning to critically think and analyze as

they find and read information on the Internet. A second sub standard says students

evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to

specific tasks. This lesson connects to that standard because students are learning to

analyze sources, which will help them select appropriate sources.

I connected this lesson to two ILA standards. The first standard I connected is 1.2,

which says, the candidate understands the historically shared knowledge of the profession

and changes over time in the perception of reading and writing development, process, and

components. In creating this lesson I am acknowledging changes in reading and writing

development because in this lesson students are learning skills to help them when

researching and reading on the Internet. This is important because students need to

understand how to differentiate good and bad websites. The second standard I connected

is 4.2, which says, the candidates use a literacy curriculum and engage in instructional

practices that positively impact students knowledge, beliefs, and engagement with the

features of diversity. This lesson connects because students are learning the basics of

research and how to determine if a website is trustworthy. This will help them as they are

working on their research projects where they will choose a topic to write about and will

conduct research.

This lesson connects to KTS 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, and 6.5. Standard 6.2 says, teacher uses

available technology to implement instruction that facilitates student learning. This

standard connects because in this lesson I will use the smart board to project the websites

for students, I will use the document camera to show students the graphic organizer, and

students will use chrome books to practice the skill being taught. Standard 6.3 says,

Integrates student use of available technology into instruction. This standard connects

because students will be using technology to analyze websites. Standard 6.4 says, teacher

uses available technology to assess and communicate student learning. This connects

because my exit slip requires students to use technology to answer two questions on

Padlet. Standard 6.5 says, demonstrates ethical and legal use of technology. This standard

is being met because in my use of technology and the students use of technology we will

be ethical and legal.
