June 22, 2017 (Ottawa, ON) A new Mainstreet/Postmedia looks at how Canadians perceive the Premiers,
and nds that nationally Qubec Premier Philippe Couillard and Alberta Premier Rachel Notley have the
highest approvals while Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister is most popular where it counts - in his home
province. The Mainstreet/Postmedia poll has a margin of error of +/- 1.35 percentage points, 19 times out
of 20.
Brian Pallister is still unknown on the national stage, said Quito Maggi, President of Mainstreet Research.
But he has a 53% approval rating in Manitoba making him the most popular premier in Canada by home
province.
Nationally, 45% approve of Philippe Couillard and Rachel Notley, though their approval ratings in their own
provinces are much lower. 37% approve of Couillard in Qubec and only 33% approve of Notley in Alberta.
Ontarios Kathleen Wynne posts the lowest score for Premiers in their home province, with 19% approval
and 70% disapproval in Ontario. Nationally she nds 38% approval and 48% disapproval, her disapproval
rating nationally is the highest among all premiers with Philippe Couillard close behind at 47%.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau comes in at 54% nationally and nds his highest approval ratings in New
Brunswick (67%), Nova Scotia (63%) and Qubec (60%). His lowest scores come from Alberta (36%) and
Saskatchewan (48%).
This is the second time Mainstreet has polled all Premiers across Canada, in the previous survey Prince
Edward Island Premier Wade MacLauchlan came in as the most popular premier by home province.
Philippe Coulliard was most popular nationally in the last survey.
Premiers with net approval ratings (home province): Brian Pallister, Stephen McNeil, Wade MacLauchlan. All
other premiers have more disapproval than approval in their home province.
Most premiers have net disapproval ratings excluding Brian Pallister, Stephen McNeil and Wade
Maclauchlan. We havent seen a lot of change at the rst minister meetings, perhaps these low approval
ratings at home are a sign of things to come, nished Maggi.
