Note: Use of Foster Clamp must follow the following
guidelines

MUST BE SUPPORTED AT ALL TIMES MUST BE SUPPORTED AT ALL TIMES

Fixed

Figure A DRILL SPOOL AND FLANGE ARRANGEMENT

Foster clamp is an alignment tool and should not be used with unsupported structure as
shown in Fig A. The major load of the flanges should be supported to ensure minimum load
transfer through the clamp. The Foster Clamp is not to support the weight of the flanges by
itself.

Bolts to be torqued to ensure
tight clamping force

Figure B: CLAMP RING CONECTION

The clamp rings should be torqued accordingly to ensure a tight connection on to the flange.

Figure C: L-block arrangement

The L-blocks should be bolted to ensure maximum distance between each other.

4
Figure D: FLANGE ALIGNMENT BOLT

Do not torque the above mentioned bolts above 50 ft. - lbs. (600 inch-lbs.) of torque. All four bolts
should be used to align the flanges; over torqueing one bolt may cause damage to the L-block.

Instructions Prior to Use of Foster Clamp:
The following instructions shall be followed prior to use. The following is not limited to pre-
use inspection but ongoing throughout the Foster Clamp tool use to ensure proper Foster
Clamp tool function.

The Foster Clamp Clamp (circular band) and Clamping Member Bodies are marked with
serial numbers for traceability (Figure 1, Item 1). The serial numbers must not be
removed, defaced, or altered. Records are completed to record maintenance and
inspection dates.

If Company Tool Lanyard (not supplied by Admiral Fabrication Ltd.) is used in Tool
Lanyard Tie-Off (Figure 1, Item 7), it must be checked for any abrasions and/or damage.
Replace when necessary. Admiral Fabrication Ltd. advises that a Company Certified Tool
Lanyard be used at all times while Foster Clamp is in use, in position, or in transport to a
certain height, however company/site safety rules and regulations take precedence over
this advisory.

Clamping Member Hold Down Bolt (Figure 1, Item 3) must be inspected for any thread
damage or excessive wear to the bolt head.

Retainer Rings (Figure 2, Item 1; Figure 3, Item 1) must be securely in place and free of
any damage.

Clamping Member Leg (Figure 1, Item 4) must be checked for cracking and/or
deformities.

All Threads (Figure 1, Items 3 & 5; Figure 4, Item 1) are to be checked for any damage
(not limited to dents, gouges, galling, cross-threading, bending, or deforming). Threads
must be free of any debris that may cause poor performance.

Inspect Grease Fitting (Figure 5, Item 1) at end of threaded rod (Figure 1, Item 5) to
ensure there is no damage as well as dirt, debris, or grease build up. Clean when
necessary. Synthetic grease is to be injected via the grease fittings on the back of the
jack studs. Two or three pumps is sufficient. Clean excessive grease off prior to use.

Inspect Ball Bearing Housing (Figure 1, Item 6) for any cracking, dirt, and/or built up
debris. In the event that cracking is evident, remove from service and contact
manufacture. Any dirt or debris must be removed from Ball Bearing Housing.

6
Ball Bearing (Figure 6, Item 1) must be rotated and checked for any cracking and flat
spots. In the event of a defect, remove from service and contact manufacture.

Magnets (Figure 7, Item 1; Figure 8, Item 1) must be securely in place, allowing for no
loose movement. Ensure screws are tight. The magnets must be checked so that they
are free from any metal filings or dirt build up.

7
Foster Clamp Assembly:
After a thorough inspection of all pieces has been completed, you can now move on to using
the Foster Clamp as your #1 choice for alignment of flanges.

The outside of all flanges must be clear of all dirt, debris, snow, ice, and/or any other obstacles
that would prevent an unobstructed and tight friction fit.

**Wrench size for all bolts is 1-5/8. **

1. Take First Half of Clamp that contains the magnets (Figure 10) and place it on the
Casing Spool Flange. The clamp ring is to be placed with the complete flat edge (Figure
7, Item 2; Figure 10, Item 1) towards piece that is to be aligned. The clamp is notched to
allow the clamping members leg (Figure 1, Item 4) to contact the Casing Spool Flange.

2. The Magnets Knobs (Figure 7, Item 3) must be in the released position prior to
attachment to flange. Turn magnet knob counter-clockwise one quarter turn to release
magnet force (to ensure magnetic force is released).

3. Place First Half of the Clamp on casing spool and turn Magnets clockwise one quarter
turn. This will activate magnet force. Ensure the clamp is placed parallel in relation to
the flange face. An uneven placement of the clamp will result in difficultly lining up the
second half of the clamp.

4. With the clamp now held on its own with the magnets, the Bolts secured in each block
of this half of the clamp (Figure 9, Item 1) must be turned counter clockwise until the
washer (Figure 9, Item 2) is making contact with the block.

8
5. Place the Second Half of the Clamp over the exposed bolts (Figure 9, Item 1). The U
(Figure 11, Item 1) should face downwards. Tighten the bolts securely. The taper in the
bolt (Figure 12) will match up with the taper in the U (Figure 11, Item 2). This will help
self-center the two halves together to easily be able to tighten the Clamp to a tight
friction fit around the Casing Spool Flange.

6. It is recommended that a Tie Off Cable be secured around the base of the Spooling
Flange.

7. It is recommended that a Tool Lanyard be used on the Clamping Member (Figure #1

Item 7) to prevent the Clamping Member from falling in the event that it is dropped.
The Clamping Member should be tied off to the tie off cable prior to bolting them to the
clamp. Admiral Fabrication Ltd. advises that a Company Certified Tool Lanyard be used
at all times while Foster Clamp is in use, in position, or in transport to a certain height,
however company/site safety rules and regulations take precedence over this advisory.

8. The Clamping Members can now be placed on to the Clamp. Typically, four clamping
members are installed to allow North, South, East, and West movement of the BOP
Valve.

9. Tighten the Clamping Member Nut with a wrench. The Clamping Member must be fit
tight and square to the Clamp with Clamping Member Leg making contact with Casing
Spool Flange.

10. If a Ring Gasket is to be installed, ensure the Clamping Members are appropriately
spaced to allow the gasket to fit between the clamping members.

11. Reverse the 1 jack studs (Figure 1, Item 5) on all Clamping Members completely to
allow for maximum misalignment of the BOP valve. **Maximum misalignment is 4.75
from the spooling flange.

9
12. The user can now bring the BOP valve in for placement.

13. By threading the 1 Jack Studs in towards the BOP Flange, the ball bearings push the
BOP into position. The bearings allow for vertical and rotational positioning of the BOP
for alignment of the BOP Stud Locations. The Internal Flange Surface Areas of the BOP
and Casing Spool should be properly matched to avoid any Hi-Lo according to the
valve manufactures specifications.

14. Once Stud Locations and Flange Faces are aligned, studs can be installed and torqued to
the valve manufactures specifications.

15. With the Flanges properly secured to one another, the 1 Jack Studs from all four
Clamping Members can be released by turning the Jack Stud counter-clockwise.

16. Clamping Members can now be removed and safely stored.

17. Loosen the 1-5/8 Nuts on the Clamp.

18. The Second Half of the Clamp can now be removed from the spooling flange and safely
stored.

19. With the First Half of the Clamp held securely by the user, each Magnet is released.
The clamp can now be safely stored.
