1.0 SCOPE
This Transmission Material Standard Specification (TMSS) specifies the minimum technical
requirements for design, engineering, manufacture, inspection testing and performance of
porcelain horizontal line-post type insulators for system voltages rated 69kV through 132kV
intended to be used in the system of Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), Saudi Arabia.
2.0 CROSS-REFERENCES
This Material Standard Specification shall be read in conjunction with the SEC General
Specification No. 01-TMSS-01, titled "General Requirements for All Equipment/Materials"
which shall be considered as an integral part of this TMSS.
This TMSS shall also be read in conjunction with SEC Purchase Order or Contract
Schedules for project, as applicable.
The latest revisions of the following Codes and Standards shall be applicable for the
equipment/material covered in this TMSS. In case of conflict, the vendor/manufacturer may
propose equipment/material conforming to one group of Industry Codes and Standards
quoted hereunder without jeopardizing the requirements of this TMSS.
3.1 IEC 60168 Tests on Indoor and Outdoor Post Insulators of Ceramic Material or
Glass for Systems with Nominal Voltages Greater Than 1000V
3.3 IEC 60507 Artificial Pollution Tests on High Voltage Insulators to be Used on
A.C.Systems
3.6 ANSI C29.7 Wet-Process Porcelain Insulators High Voltage Line Post Type
3.7 ASTM-A153 Standard Specification for Zinc Coating (Hot-Dip) on Iron and Steel
Hardware
4.1 General
4.1.1 Line post insulators shall be of manufacturer's standard design and shall
meet or exceed the requirements of this Specification in all respects.
4.1.2 The line post insulator may consist of a single piece of porcelain together
with its metal parts or of two or more porcelain pieces bolted together to
form a rigid assembly.
4.1.3 The insulator shall be designed for steel or wood pole horizontal mounting
and shall be clamp top type.
4.2 Ratings
The line post insulator shall have the mechanical, electrical and insulation class
ratings as shown in Data Schedule and Table 1
Table 1
4.3 Materials
4.3.2 The entire exposed porcelain surface of the insulator shall be standard
glazed and shall be brown in color. The entire porcelain surface of the
insulator shall be smooth and free of imperfections.
4.3.3 Metal parts shall be made of a good commercial grade of malleable iron,
ductile iron or steel, galvanized in accordance with Specification 01-
TMSS-01.
4.3.4 Portland cement or Alumina cement shall be used as the bonding agent
between the porcelain and the metal parts. Sulfur based cements shall not
be used.
4.4 Fabrication
4.4.1 The insulator surface shall be shaped and spaced for effective natural
cleaning and effective use of leakage distance for desert conditions.
4.4.3 The insulator shall be radio and television interference free at operating
voltage.
4.4.4 The hardware shall be cemented on the porcelain, loading the porcelain
with low intensity compression grip over a large area.
4.4.5 The insulator core shall be free from cracks and voids which may adversely
affect the insulators strength and performance.
4.5 Mounting
4.5.1 The insulator base shall have NEMA or equivalent IEC standard bolt holes
for mounting.
4.5.2 The insulator base shall be curved for wood pole mounting or flat for steel
pole mounting as specified in Data Schedule.
4.6 Markings
4.6.1 Each insulator shall bear a durable marking in accordance with ANSI or
IEC Standard, identifying the following:
a. Manufacturer's Name
b. Year of Manufacture
c. Catalog Number
d. Cantilever Strength
e. Country of Origin
5.0 TESTS
All test results shall be provided for review and acceptance by SEC.
5.1.1 All type (design) tests including radio interference test prescribed in the
relevant IEC or equivalent ANSI standards shall be performed on the
representative unit or on the first unit of every new design or rating to be
supplied to SEC.
5.1.2 In lieu of the actual type (design) tests, certified test reports of type (design)
tests performed on an identical unit may be submitted to SEC for review
and approval during bidding stage.
All routine (production) tests prescribed in the relevant IEC or equivalent ANSI
standards shall be performed on all units prior to delivery to SEC.
All sample (quality conformance) tests prescribed in the relevant IEC and ANSI
standards shall be performed on each lot of insulator prior to delivery to SEC.
The pollution test, as an option shall be performed in accordance with IEC 60507, if
requested by SEC in Data Schedule.
