MohammedbinSalman,31,wasappointedcrownprincebyhisfatherKingSalmanonWednesday,replacing
hiscousinwhois26yearshissenior.Thismadetheprince,whoalreadyoversawdefenceandenergypolicy,the
mostpowerfulfigureinthecountrybysomestretchaftertheoctogenarianmonarch.

Thedecisionrepresentsasocialandculturalseachange,withtherulingbatonsettobepassedtoamuch
youngergenerationinacountrywherepatriarchaltraditionshavelongmadepowertheprovinceoftheold.
