Title of Lesson: Finding Greatest Common Divisor

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills/Standards:


4C) Students use the relationship between skip counting and equal groups of
objects to represent the addition or subtraction of equivalent sets, which
builds a strong foundation for multiplication and division.

6B) Model, create, and describe contextual division situations in which a set of
concrete objects is separated into equivalent sets.

Objective/Purpose: For the student to be able to connect adding,


subtracting, multiplication and division to learn about greatest common
divisor.

Introduce Lesson: The students have prior knowledge of addition,


subtraction, and multiplication. I introduced division last week, but would like
for you to review the division problems using manipulatives. You will then
introduce the students to greatest common divisor. You will use their
knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to help them
understand about greatest common divisor. Show them that greatest
common divisor is just a phrase to say the greatest number that can go into a
set of numbers evenly.

Example:
Use the following examples when reviewing division: 93, 204, 147, 355.

For the greatest common divisor use the following examples:


Find the greatest common divisor of the following two numbers:
12 and 8 and 12 and 18.
Lesson: I want you to review with students the division examples I listed
above using manipulatives. Give each student a bag of tokens so they can
follow your steps as you review with them the examples. Have them do the
problem with you. For example, when doing 9 divided by three say, If I have
nine pieces of candies and I wanted to share them with a total of three
friends, how many pieces of candies does each friend gets? Then
demonstrate on the promethean board using the tokens I have placed on my
desk. Show them the nine candies they started with and then divide them into
three separate even piles so the student will be able to visualize the division
concept. After you have gone over the division examples have them log into
the computer into the following website,
http://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_Division_Derby.html. They will be able
to practice their division on this site. Give them 10 minutes to practice and
introduce greatest common divisor. When teaching greatest common divisor
please stress that all it is, is the greatest number that can be divided into two
numbers evenly. Nothing more than just that. You will show them how to find
the greatest common divisor by diving the greatest number into the smallest.
Do the two examples I have listed. I will work them out of you and you will
teach it to them this way. Once you review with them the examples you will
give them a small assessment which they will work independently, so I can be
able to see whether they understood the concept. I have attached the
assessment. They must turn it in before the end of the day.
How to work out the examples to teach them greatest common divisor:

Re-Teach: I would do small group instruction with students who did not
understood the lesson. While the students who have learned the lesson, can
have a practice worksheet. I would make sure that the students understood
that is nothing more than dividing two numbers until we have no remainders
left. Showing them that the greatest common divisor is the last number we
divided into the division where we got zero as a remainder.
