Observation Form 1
1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if
known, for example, TEKS 111.4. Grade 2.b.)
At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher had one of the students read the objective and then,
she told students what the warm-up is and she gave them 2 minutes to work on it independently.
At the end of the lesson, the teacher told students to write a parent email that explains their
students misconceptions on the topic.
3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?
4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? ( lecture, inquiry,
discovery learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning,
integration of technology, socrative questioning, etc.).
Ms. Daeso used lecture method at the beginning of the lesson. She introduced warm-up and
asked students to give feedback on warm-up by asking questions. Then she used independent and
cooperative learning. She asked students to work on the questions solo for 2 min and then she let
students work together to solve problems.
5-How did the teacher assess learning? (Informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, open-
ended, quiz, feedback etc) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods.
She used informal methods. She performed oral assessment and gave some feedbacks to
students answers.
6- What can you say about the teachers philosophy/beliefs and style?
(Traditional/progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc).
The teachers philosophy was mostly student-centered. Student were working on the problems
and explaining the problems. The teacher was just assisting the students.
7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?
Ms. Daeso was actively monitoring students, always walking around in the classroom and
checking for understanding. Beside those, she did not have to use any other techniques.
8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when off-
task. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?
All students were on the task. I did not see any students who were off the task.
9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)
10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc)
There were 16 students in the classroom. Students were almost at the same level. They were well
behaved. They were motivated and interacting in groups to solve problems. Almost all students
participated.
11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is
ineffective in keeping students engaged?
Everything the teacher did was effective. I did not observe anything in effective.
12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?
1. Writing a reflection at the end of the lesson. I believe it helps students to see what they learned
in the lesson.
2. The teacher was always asking students to explain their work. I would like to use the
questioning technique in my classroom.
13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?
2. I believe it is very important to know how to start a lesson. Introducing the objective at the
beginning of the lesson and warm-up would help to star the lesson.
