SIGN OF CONTRADICTION

Why Francis?
St. Francis is one of the most beloved saints of all time, but do we
really know him? Cities, schools, hospitals and churches around the
world are dedicated to him, but why? He can be found in gardens
across the country, but he must be more than just a birdbath.

Francis is known as a lover of peace and of nature, and this is


true. But he also went against the social norms of his time. He
abandoned all that the world said would lead to happiness in
search of something more. To them, Francis first appeared a fool. He
was an outsider, hated and ridiculed by even the people who were
supposed to love him the most. Yet thousands have followed him.
Why?

When all the world saw him as a fool, Francis stood as a sign of
contradiction.

Sign of Contradiction
This film is about presenting a real
person, not just some characterization
of an animal-loving saint from a distant
time. Francis is a person who, like us, searched
for purpose and meaning and was oftentimes
left empty. It wasnt until he encountered Christ
that darkness and confusion were replaced with light
and peace. Near the end, Francis turned to his
brothers and said, I have done what is mine,
it is for Him to show you what is yours. Our
goal is for those who watch this film to be
inspired by the life of St. Francis and to
desire to live for God as he did. As
we look at Francis, Francis points
us to Christ.

5 PILLARS
OF TELLING THE STORY
1. Fr. Dave Pivonka guides the viewer on a pilgrimage to
locations important to the life of Francis.

2. Featured interviews focus on the different themes and


stories surrounding Francis. These interviews are with
Francis experts and individuals who exemplify his way of
life.

3. The visuals of the locations themselves- churches,


landmarks and countrysides- add to the beauty and context
of the life of Francis.

4. Throughout the film re-enactment scenes depict Francis


journey. These visuals allow us to follow Francis through
his story. The actual face of Francis is not seen at any point,
allowing the viewers imagination to build a new image of
him.

5. The film includes sound design and original score which


enchances the richness of the visuals and the depth of the
story.

FR. DAVE PIVONKA, TOR
Fr. Dave Pivonka is a nationally known author and speaker. He is a member of the
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Province of the Franciscan Friars of the Third Order
Regular. In The Wild Goose, he led us on an incredible spiritual journey. For this film,
Fr. Dave again leads the viewer on a pilgrimage, but this time, to the
important places in the life of St. Francis.
