Fire Risk Assessment

Following the recent tragic fire incident in West London, we would like to remind owners and
operators of premises of their legal duty under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order
2005.

This includes:
Arranging for a fire risk assessment to be completed by a qualified and competent Fire
Risk Assessor to determine what fire safety measures and management policies are
necessary to ensure the safety of people in the building should fire occur by:
o reducing the probability of a fire starting
o ensuring that all occupants are alerted and can leave the premises safely in the
event of a fire
o limiting the effects should a fire occur
Completing any actions identified as areas for improvement within the fire risk assessment
Ensuring that all equipment provided to assist the evacuation from the premises is
regularly tested, inspected and maintained by suitably competent persons
Ensuring that the fire risk assessment is reviewed regularly to keep it up to date (it isnt a
one off!), and particularly when:
o there is reason to suspect that people are not safe in case of fire, or
o there has been a significant change to the preventative and protective measures
you have taken in case of fire
o refurbishment to the premises
o permanent or temporary change in the fire evacuation route
o temporary failure of the fire alarm system
Ensuring that staff members are regularly trained to carry out an evacuation
Ensuring that staff are aware of the nominated person(s) who are nominated and trained
to tackle a small fire, and those who have been nominated and trained to carry out the
evacuation procedures
Consideration should also be given when purchasing items such as exercise mats, soft
play equipment and furniture to ensure they comply with current fire regulations. PTO
