Julia Rogers June 2015

Objective Equipment required:

Students will: o 10 dodge balls
o Learn proper techniques for o 10 bowling pins
accurate overhand and o 2 hula hoops
underhand throwing o Tape
o Be able to implement and
practice accurate throwing in a
fun and new way

Warm up (3-5 minutes)
Students will:
1. Run 2 laps around the gym
2. Follow the teacher in an upper body warm up including:
a. 20 jumping jacks
b. Arm swings (forwards and backwards)
c. Arm stretches

Instruction (5 minutes)
Teacher will instruct the students on proper throwing form using verbal and visual
cues (explain process verbally while demonstrating, getting students to mimic
actions WITHOUT ball)

Overhand Throw 1. Side to target
2. Weight on back foot with arm in a
Lazy L shape
3. Transfer weight to front foot with
good step and waist rotation,
keeping arm behind body until
right before throw
4. Follow through

Introductory activity (5 minutes)
Set up:
o Dodgeballs ready for use
o 2 hula hoops taped to the wall at approximately students waist height

Activity:
1. Students will be instructed to find partners and be given 1 dodge ball per
pair of students.
2. Using gym lines, students will be instructed to practice throwing, using both
proper techniques (underhand throw is to be rolled along the floor) (2
minutes)
3. Then students will be divided up into equal teams, given pinnies and lined up
an equal distance from the hula hoops taped to the wall
4. A relay race where students will throw at the hula-hoop from the line using
an overhand throw. If the student hits the wall inside the hula-hoop, they will
retrieve the ball, pass it to the next student in line, and sit down to the side
and cheer their teammates on. If they do not hit, they will retrieve their own
ball and continue trying until they hit inside the hula-hoop.
5. Both teams must continue until all students have thrown

race.

Final Game: Skittles (Dodgeball) (5-7 minutes)

Set Up:
o 5 bowling pins set up on each side of the gym behind an obvious line in the
court
o Dodge balls lined up along the middle of the court
o Class divided into 2 teams (same as relay teams)

Figure 2: Set up for Final Game
(Skittles)

Activity:
o Basic dodge ball rules are to be followed
o 2 teams
o Students must remain on their side of the centre line.
o Balls are thrown at the other team, if you are hit by a live ball (hasnt
hit any surface of the gym) then you are out.
o Hits must be neck down. If a student hits another student in the head,
then the student who threw the ball is out.
o If a live ball is caught, whoever threw the ball is out.
o Students start at the back line and have to wait until the teacher yells
Go! to run and start throwing balls
o The goal of the game is to knock down the opposite teams 5 bowling pins.
o Once a student is out, they will move to the side of the courts. They are given
the opportunity to re-enter the game by performing either 5 push-ups or 5
burpees
o Students are allowed to guard pins, but pins will be behind a specified line
that the students can only cross to retrieve balls.
o Game is over once one team as successfully knocked over all 5 of the other
teams bowling pins
o Game can be played multiple times, if time allows

Take Home Knowledge:
Students will have learned the appropriate throw technique for their age, and this
will aid in the development of their physical literacy of throwing. The game will
show them that throwing is involved in many different types of activities and sports.
