Tragic Love

Cody Bistline once stated,You fall in love with the most unexpected person at the most

unexpected time. This quote demonstrates how you can fall in love with someone youd never

expect to fall in love with. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the author

shows the readers how two star-crossed lovers fall in love despite their families rivalry and do

everything they possibly can to be with each other. This play tells the story of a long-standing

hatred between two families, the Montagues and the Capulets, who cause chaos in the city of

Verona. Romeo, a Montague, is only interested in love and goes to extremes to prove the

seriousness of his feeling for Juliet, a Capulet, who gave her entire life and future to Romeo

without the consent of her parents. This tragedy ended with both Romeo and Juliet committing

suicide but in effect, the two families came together. In the literary work Pyramus and Thisbe

by Ovid, the reader is introduced to Pyramus, the most handsome guy in all of Babylon and

Thisbe, a girl who had more charm than anyone in the East. The text describes two kids who live

in the ancient city of Babylon, where their families have been neighbors all their lives. As

Pyramus and Thisbe grew up together, they started to fall in love. Unfortunately, marriage was

forbidden by their parents and the only way to communicate was through a little crack on the

wall that separated the two houses. One day, they made up a plan to meet up at Ninus Tomb and
2

hide beneath a tree in the darkness, but the plan went wrong when Thisbe arrived early and a lion

who just got done killing an oxen started heading her way. On her way to a nearby cave, she

dropped her shawl and the lion ripped it to pieces, blood staining it. Pyramus then showed up and

misunderstood the whole situation, so he killed himself with his dagger because he thought

Thisbe was dead. When Thisbe made her way back to the mulberry tree, she figured out that

Pyramus committed suicide and she followed in his footsteps and stabbed herself with his bloody

dagger. From that day on, the white berries on the mulberry tree have been stained red from the

tragic lovers blood. Love has many features, such as joy, passion, and pain.

One facet of love is joy, a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. Both Romeo and

Juliet by William Shakespeare and Pyramus and Thisbe by Ovid show how love can be

joyful. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, when Juliet was on her way to

Friar Lawrences cell, Romeo stated to Friar Lawrence, But come what sorrow can, it cannot

countervail the exchange of joy that one short minute gives me in her sight (Shakespeare

II/vi/3-5). This example explains that whatever misfortune occurs, it cant ruin the joy he feels by

one look at her. This reveals joyful love because it makes him joyful just by looking at her. In the

literary work Pyramus and Thisbe by Ovid, when the narrator is informing us about the

characters and the main conflict, the narrator says, ... in all these years, no one had seen that

cleft; but lovers will discover everything: you were the first to find it, and you made that cleft a

passageway which speech could take (Ovid 19-22). This evidence displays that two young

lovers discovered a cloven in the wall that separated their houses. This is important because they

were able to communicate with each other through that cloven which demonstrates joy because

without that cloven, they cant communicate. Readers can come to the conclusion that joy is a

facet of love that shows happiness.

Another facet of love is passion, a strong and barely controllable emotion. In Romeo and

Juliet by William Shakespeare, after the Capulets house party, Juliet said, O Romeo, Romeo!

Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name. Or, if thou wilt not, be but

sworn my love, and Ill no longer be a Capulet (Shakespeare II/ii/33-36). To better understand

this position, readers learn here that she wants Romeo to forget about his father and change his

name. If he wont change his name, then if he swears he loves her, shell stop being a Capulet. It

is apparent that she has such strong feelings for Romeo that she would give up her own name just

to be with him. In the myth Pyramus and Thisbe by Ovid, when the two find the cleft in the

wall, they say, O jealous wall, why do you block our path? Oh wouldnt it be better if you let

our bodies join each other fully, or if that is asking for too much, just stretched your fissure wide

enough to let us kiss! (Ovid 28-31). This evidence illustrates that the walls cleft isnt wide

enough to let the lovers share a kiss. This reveals their feelings for each other because they just

want to be with each other without anything getting in their way. Readers can come to the

conclusion that passion is a facet of love that shows strong emotions.

The last facet of love is pain, a distressing feeling. In the play Romeo and Juliet by

William Shakespeare, the nurse finds out Tybalt has been murdered and tells Juliet, Tybalt is

gone, and Romeo banished. Romeo that killed him-he is banished (Shakespeare III/ii/70-71).

This showcases that Romeo murdered Tybalt and because he did, his punishment is banishment.

It is apparent that Juliet just lost her cousin and that if it wasnt already hard enough to see

Romeo, it just got harder because now hes banished from Verona. In the literary work Pyramus

and Thisbe by Ovid, when Pyramus shows up to the tomb and sees Thisbes shawl all bloody

and ripped up, the narrator states, And then he drew his dagger from his belt and thrust it hard

into his guts. And as he died, he wrenched the dagger from his gushing wound (Ovid 94-97).

This example explains how Pyramus committed suicide because he thought his love was dead.

This is important because she was never really dead until she realized he was dead and then

she committed suicide because she said she couldnt live without him. Readers can come to the

conclusion that pain is a facet of love that gives you a distressing feeling.

Love has many facets in love, such as joy, passion, and pain. Joyful love can make you

have the best feelings in life, especially when its with a loved one. Passionate love can bring out

a side of you that you have never really discovered before, making you show strong emotions to

someone or something you're in love with. Lastly, painful love can hurt in many ways, such as

losing a loved one, a severe break up, or even having to wait on your crush to like you back. In

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and Pyramus and Thisbe by Ovid, a lesson that

was learned was, Love can leave a memory that no one can steal, but love can also leave a pain

that no one can heal. This quote means that both Romeo and Juliet and Pyramus and Thisbe

created memories with each other that they wont forget and since they all committed suicide,

that's a pain that cant be healed. Both literary works are very interesting to read because of all

the facets of love in the stories that make the story comparable to your own.
