Education 2500: A Journey of Discovery

Throughout this past semester, I have thoroughly enjoyed Education 2500, both seminar and
practicum; I have discovered so much about the teaching profession as well as who I want to be as a
teacher. I believe that there are many facets to being a teacher. A teacher needs to ensure that their
students learn the different aspects of the curriculum. However, a teacher also needs to be a guide for
their students in discovering their potential, whether that is academic or not. Additionally, teachers
need to set an example and encourage their students to live a positive, healthy lifestyle.
I want to be a teacher who creates a strong community and a positive learning environment
within my classroom. I want to bring passion and creativity to any subject that I teach, by ensuring that
I have a thorough knowledge of the subject area in addition to having flexible lesson plans that appeal
to different learning styles. I want to approach every day and every situation with an open-mind and
encourage my students to do the same. I firmly believe that every student has potential and I want to
help him or her find what inspires them and encourage them to follow their passions.
I believe that I possess several attributes and characteristics that would benefit me greatly in a
career in teaching. I am a strong leader and I have spent many years learning and developing specific
leadership skills. I am a positive person and I do my best to see the positive elements in every
situation; I would bring this into my future classroom as well as to my relationships with my students
and their parents. I am also a lifelong learner. I love learning about all different subjects, and I hope to
lead by example to inspire my students to be the same.
Before Education 2500, I thought that I would only want to teach older students in a middle or
high school setting. However, my elementary practicum has shown me that this will not be the case. I
have loved working in my grade 5/6 class; their energy and creativity is inspiring and they are much
more independent than I was anticipating. I think that when I eventually start my career I would
definitely consider teaching in elementary, whether that be elementary music or in an older
elementary classroom. Another thing that I have discovered in Education 2500 is that I do not have to
separate who I am from my career; children respond when they see that you are passionate about a
subject as well and I look forward to sharing my passions and interests with my future students.
There are a few areas that I would like to develop further when I eventually move into the
education program. An area that I believe I still need to develop is my classroom management style.
Observing different teachers throughout my practicum has been really helpful with this; I have seen
many different styles and I am beginning to decide what I want my individual style to be. Another area
that I will need to develop is my sense of time management. While it has been quite successful
throughout this past semester, I believe that as I move into full time teaching finding a balance
between my career and my personal time will be really important for me and I believe that effective
time management will be the best way to achieve this.
Five years from now, I hope to be living in a permanent residence and teaching music at either
an elementary or middle school. I hope to be involved with either a school or extra-curricular choir
program. I hope that I can use my passion for music to inspire students, whether that be in music or in
another area of their lives.
Education 2500 has taught me so many new things about the teaching profession and about
who I want to be as a teacher. I am so grateful for this learning experience and I am excited to take the
next steps in my education journey.
