ISRAEL: FIFTY YEARS OF A UNITED JERUSALEM,
FIFTY YEARS OF OCCUPATION?
F
ifty years. Five decades. A half century. On the 28th
day of the Hebrew month of Iyyar -- Wednesday, May
24, 2017 -- we will mark fifty years since Jerusalem be-
came reunited (28 Iyyar corresponds to June 7, 1967). Fifty
years ago, in the midst of the Six-Day War, the young State
of Israel succeeded in winning a defensive battle against its
neighbors and in the process acquired a significant amount
of land. Therefore, this spring, we mark fifty years of a
united Jerusalem and also fifty years of what many call an
Occupation or what others call Judea and Samaria. What
are the lessons, the struggles, the blessingsfifty years later?
Both Jews and Arabs dwelled in Jerusalem during the
first part of the 20th Century, so the United Nations 1947
Partition Plan deemed the City of Peace an international
city. In 1948, following the Arab war against Israel
ultimately known as Israels War of Independence, Jordan
occupied the Old City and East Jerusalem. The Jewish
residents of these areas were killed or forcibly evacuated.
The Jordanians destroyed many of Jerusalems synagogues
and plundered the Jewish tombstones on the Mount of
Olives. Jordan forbade Jews from visiting the Kotel the
Wailing Wall (now Western Wall) our holiest site.
In 1967, Israel again faced a David vs. Goliath battle
against many Arab armies. Though Israel offered an olive
branch to Jordans King Hussein promising that if Jordan
stayed out of the war Israel would not attack Jerusalem,
Jordan nevertheless began shelling civilian locations. After
a miraculous assault, on June 7, 1967, Israel Defense
Minister Moshe Dayan famously proclaimed, We have
united JerusalemWe have returned to the holiest of our

holy places, never to part from it again. To our Arab neighbors
we extendour hand in peace. And to our Christian and
Muslim fellow citizens, we solemnly promise full religious
freedom and rights.
In addition to reuniting Jerusalem, Israel acquired a sig-
nificant amount of land and its many residents: some of these
areas, though still subject to protests, became part of Israel
proper; some became considered occupied territories; and
some were traded with the intention of peace and security.
Where are we now: what are the implications fifty years
later? As we mark this significant moment in history and the
events of the subsequent years, I look forward to a direct,
honest, and open conversation about the blessings and the
challenges of these five decades. What can we learn?
What must we change? Where do we go from here?

1. What is one new mitzvah (sacred obligation) that I can
take upon myself or my family?
2. What might it mean today to remember that we were
once strangers in a foreign land?
3. In keeping with the Passover mitzvah of ma-ot chittim,
how might I strive to care for Jews in need at this time?
4. In what new ways might I use Passover or the Passover
seder to lead more deeply a life of gratitude, obligation
and joy?

COFFEE, CONGREGANTS AND CONVERSATION

F
or the last couple of months, I have been spending a
few hours each week at the coffee shop in the Maple
Theater: a charming little space with rough wooden
floors, a gentle fire, and walls covered in vintage movie
cameras. The idea is a simple one; I want to be able to meet
people where they are, to find the pieces of life and
expression in a Jewish community that may not have the
time or desire to meet with a rabbi in his synagogue office.
Throughout these caffeinated time slots of rabbinic
engagement, I have met with many Shaarey Zedek
congregants and, sharing some coffee and maybe a muffin
or two, we have had deep and personal conversations
about who we are and where we are going, both as a
community and as individuals.
But there have also been moments of the unexpected -
an impromptu conversation about young peoples
relationship to Israel where the leading voice of the
discussion belonged to an Episcopalian priest. There have
been non-Jews who have swung by to ask a question or two
that theyve always wondered about Judaism or the Jewish
people. There have been men and women from other
synagogues who have asked for my advice in regards to the
growth and sustainability of their shuls, and there have been
accidental minyanim, a joke that, with the constant
coming and going of Jewish professionals and clergy that
frequent the coffee shop, there could, theoretically, be
prayer services for all three of the daily prayers with the
required ten Jews to make a minyan.
Maybe the idea sounds more like a documentary film
than part of a rabbis normal work week, but the truth of the
matter is that our Jewish world is changing, and we must be
ready to meet the challenges that inevitably come with change.
So what I ask in this small article, is that we move
forward together with excitement and hope, knowing that
the foreign or the unknown can, at times, be frightening.
And I ask that, if you have some free time on your Monday
mornings, you come meet me for coffee, to talk about any-
thing and everything, no matter how large or how small,
and that, together, we can meet each challenge one day at
a time.

Explore the historic sections and family plots that make this such an important place for our
community. In addition to self-guided and docent-led walking tours, the Clover Hill Chapel will
be open for a special presentation.
This is a walking tour. Please come dressed for the weather and wear comfortable (flat) shoes.
There is limited accessibility for wheelchairs.
Self-guided tours from 10:00 a.m. 12:00 Noon.
Docent-led walking tours will begin at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

 ERACE MENTAL ILLNESS
The community met to walk, run, raise awareness and raise
funds for programming at Jewish Family Service that will
assist people who have mental and emotional challenges.
Contributing to the family carnival atmosphere at the starting
point were beautiful weather, lively music and smoothies
from Hazons Topsy-Turvy Bus. Thanks to all our partners!

Sisterhood opened their program year as the A-List Players
performed a humourous piece, What Am I Doing Here?
from Judi Schrams book, Lights Out in the Attic.

SENIORS CHANUKAH PROGRAM

Our annual CSZ Seniors Chanukah program featured a
catered lunch with latkes and special desserts, and musical
entertainment by fan-favorite Michael Krieger.

Shpiel and childrens costume parade, to the carnival games, inflatables and
special characters, to dancing and eating, to the Traditional Megillah reading
and all the laughter from comedian Robin Foxs performance, 2017 was a Purim
to remember!

A Magical Mystery Tour came to Shaarey Zedek to
celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles last concert in
Detroit. The Toppermost tribute band, Israeli buffet, and
Yellow Submarine custom cocktails didnt disappoint, as we
danced the night away to our favorite memories.

MISSION TO SPAIN
Sisterhood presented an evening of Tapas and sangria, with
a travelogue by Hazzan David Propis, accompanied by the
photography of Jeri Fishman. Jeri was one of our congre-
gants who accompanied Hazzan Propis and the Cantors
Assembly on a musical Mission and tour of Jewish Spain.

 WINTER MINI CAMP
Winter Wonderland mini-camp was a week of non-stop
fun and activities with friends during the winter school recess.

THRILLING THURSDAY
Creative gross-motor play for our youngest friends continues
weekly, with themed activity days, snacks and occasional
special guests. Open to the community, for children ages 0-
5 and their favorite adult. Donations are graciously
accepted to perpetuate our programming.
