perhaps a snug, too? Is entertaining at
the top of your list, or do you mainly use

produce CAD drawings, which give a good
idea of how the design will look, and this

taps, splashbacks and fooring. Profcient

for materials beyond the cabinetry.

into. im not bothered whether a piece has

an underused word in design. ive recently
become interested in the georgian period,
when objects and architecture were all
beautifully balanced. in any design
discipline, from craft to engineering, getting
the proportions right is what makes it work.
Cofee pots and accessories are what
im known for, but i love to do furniture.
Weve created a lot of pieces for companies
such as John lewis and Fired earth, but id
like to start selling from our own factory.

My kitchen is in redevelopment. Our
house is a 1970s bungalow that weve
resurrected with a contemporary design.
The kitchen is a large open-plan space with

aking on a period property has its
challenges, as Rikke and Iain
Mitchell discovered when they
bought their 200-year-old house.
Problems such as dry rot and damp
had to be dealt with before they could even think
about tackling the makeshift kitchen the previous
owners had installed before selling. We wanted to
create an open layout with a nice big island and
plenty of storage, says Rikke. And good-quality
solid-wood units that would last for years.
Stripped back to its raw state and with new
oak foorboards laid throughout, the room had
plenty of potential. It was a decent size, with lots of
windows, so the couple felt they didnt need to
extend or make structural changes. Knowing

The layout
precisely what she wanted from her new kitchen,
both functionally and aesthetically, Rikke
contacted a number of kitchen companies and
cabinetmakers. It was surprisingly difcult to
fnd anyone who was happy to work with my plans
rather than coming up with their own, she says.
Some tried to sell me units I didnt need, and one
suggested blocking out one of the windows.
Then Rikke came across Tim Higham of
Higham Furniture via a magazine article, and
his handleless Shaker-style cupboard doors were
exactly what shed been looking for. Tim had
some great ideas, always listened to me, and is a
great craftsman, says Rikke. The fnal result is
a warm, stylish, child-friendly kitchen, which
perfectly complements the style of the house.

What was at the top of your wish list?
I had my heart set on an island with a hob,
giving me a dedicated place to cook. A tall
larder unit with a concealed worktop was a
must, too. Everythings perfectly organised
on the racks and shelves inside it, with room
for the microwave underneath, yet when the
doors are shut it looks like another cupboard.
Talk us through the storage
Theres loads! As well as the sideboard, a bank
of units runs down the side wall and has open
shelving, cupboards, drawers for large pans,
crockery and glasses. The island ofers further
storage, along with a sweep of base units
on the back wall by the sinks.
Are there any clever design features?
My husband Iain and I are both tall, so the
units are slightly higher than standard. Also,
the doors are on ball-bearing hinges and open
right out to 180 degrees, whereas most stop
at slightly over 90 degrees. Tim advised us
to incorporate a pull-out bin next to the sink,
which I wasnt keen on at frst. Now I realise
its very practical, because our children Isla
and Erik cant get to it or put things that
arent rubbish into it, as toddlers tend to do.
How did you choose the worktops?
The surfaces are from a local family-run
stonemasons called Geology. They imported

Rather than tiles, the couple opted for rustic oak
fooring throughout, which adds richness of colour.
Its also warmer underfoot, and fragile objects
are less likely to break if dropped
a number of slabs for me to choose from and
also had photos sent from suppliers in Italy
for extra choice. They were really lovely to
deal with and their service was fully bespoke.
The worktop is double the normal thickness,
and they supplied further marble for the top
of the sideboard in the dining room.
Why did you opt for these appliances?
Smeg is a reliable brand and I like the look of
its products. Having two ovens is very handy,
and I prefer the precision of a gas hob to
induction. We looked at lots of fridge freezer
options and, although an American-style
model would have been the obvious choice,
they tend to have curved doors and I wanted
a more streamlined look. The one we chose
was the perfect size and included a wine
cooler. Theres a downdraft extractor in the
island, which is ingenious. It rises up and sinks
back into the worktop afterwards, and the
ducting is hidden behind the bookshelf below.
What do you like best about your
new and improved kitchen?
Its such a great success that its hard picking
out particular features. But I love running my
hands along the smooth, cool marble worktop
as I walk past. Its very tactile. I do it every time
and so does everyone else! I also enjoy standing
by the island cooking and looking out at the
setting sun through the west-facing windows.

a great eye for display

hen Lenny van der Heijden and Jeroen Jansen
moved into their frst home, Lenny was expecting
their frst daughter, Mee. Two more children and
a cat later, and the original kitchen soon felt too
small to be practical. Furthermore, Lennys biggest
passion is cooking, and the couple wanted a space where the whole family
could cook and eat together. So we decided to design our own dream
kitchen-diner a tailor-made room extending into the garden, says Lenny.
Id always hankered for a large kitchen and Id been gathering ideas for long dining table, which keeps the area feeling open and spacious. To create
years. This is the frst scheme I have ever designed myself, so it was daunting
at frst but I had a clear vision of how it could look.
While the extension a light-flled room leading of the sitting room,
with tall windows, French doors overlooking the garden, and a niche for
a gas fre was being built, Lenny visited a local kitchen company armed
with a folder full of ideas. After discussing various layouts and designs, she

We love to keep photos and postcards that capture precious memories, and this
shop display rack is ideal for putting our favourites on show, says Lenny
opted for a single run of fat-fronted base units adjacent to the rooms large
windows, with a short return of full-length cabinets that would house the
integrated ovens and hide the sizeable fridge freezer. Open shelving
was also incorporated into the scheme for cookbooks and decorative items.
The rest of the room was to remain unftted and anchored by a dining
table the couple wanted to design themselves. We knew the long, single
countertop would ofer us enough worksurface, and that adding an island
would take up too much room, explains Lenny. So we went with an extra-
extra storage, we built foor-to-ceiling cabinets either side of the entrance
to the sitting room. When it came to decorating, Lenny chose a subtle
colour scheme of chalky whites and pale greys, which ofset the rooms
natural materials beautifully and maximise the sense of space.
Ultimately, Lenny and Jeroen were keen to create a kitchen that felt
fun, warm and welcoming the real heart of their home.

What were the main considerations
when designing your kitchen?
My husband and I are fairly tall, so we knew we
needed an extra-high worktop. We also wanted
a bright space with sturdy materials made to last.
As a keen cook, what works well for you?
I love the hob burners, and the boiling-water tap
is very handy. And the freplace is special in
winter it creates such a warm, welcoming mood.
Tell us about the cabinetry
We went for simple, fat-fronted white base
units because we wanted a sleek look. They were
made by a local kitchen manufacturer, but we
couldnt aford to have the foor-to-ceiling
furniture supplied by them too, plus we wanted
it in wood. So, we had it custom-made locally,
which actually turned out to be cheaper.
And your choice of materials?
The low cabinets under the worktop are made
from high-quality, durable white plastic, and the
high-level kitchen cabinet wooden doors were
custom-made by a local carpenter and painted
a pale grey shade. The 6m-long wooden coat
rack shelf was made especially for us in Germany.
As well as using it to hang all my kitchen utensils
on, it has useful lighting spots integrated on the
underside. The worktop is a composite. It looks
a bit like concrete and is incredibly hardy you
can do anything on it without it staining.
Why did you opt for integrated burners?
They look striking and are easy to keep clean.
Also, three burners set up in a row allows for really
easy cooking, plus you can decide on your own
confguration and position for the burners. But
theyve not been without their problems. The
upstand of the kitchen counter top has split
more than once because of the heat.
Tell us about your lengthy kitchen table
The table is 2.8m long and we designed it
ourselves. It was custom-made by Van IJken
Oude Bouwmaterialen, a local salvage yard
specialising in furniture made from old building
materials. The wood is from an old railway
carriage and weve protected it with matt varnish.
In hindsight, would you have done
anything diferently?
Unfortunately, Jeroen wasnt able to come to the
kitchen company to help choose the fnal layout,
or decide what we needed and where. Id have
liked a bit more of his input but, in the end,
were both extremely happy with the fnished
result, and it really suits our lofty statures.

a practical scheme with plenty of gloss

semi had been converted into three fats
when they bought it, but the plan was always
to turn it into a family home. We kept the
ground-foor kitchen, which was in a
compact lean-to at the back of the property, with concrete
foors and a corrugated roof, says Jessica. New units and
appliances had been put in, but they were pretty basic.
The couple lived with the existing kitchen for two
years while they renovated the rest of the house and
made plans for an extension that would increase the size
of the kitchen fvefold. I knew precisely what I wanted,
from an open-plan layout and big central island right
down to the rooms dimensions and what would be
stored in each cupboard, recalls Jessica. The new space
also had to be family-friendly and large enough to
accommodate a kitchen, dining area and living zone.
After visiting a number of showrooms, Jessica and
Rob were most impressed with Harvey Jones, and
collaborated with designer Mike Michael to come up with
a foor plan. Once the old kitchen had been demolished
and the extension built, Mike and his team began ftting
out the interior. Jessica had clear ideas about the style of
cabinetry and the calm, muted colour scheme. I didnt
want Shaker-style units because Im not a country
kitchen kind of person, or anything too minimalist
either because I didnt think it would do anything for the
integrity of the Victorian architecture, she explains.
We were looking for something that fell somewhere in
between, and Harvey Joness Linear range was the only
in-frame painted kitchen that Rob and I both liked.

Did the couple have a good idea of what they wanted?
Yes, they came to us with detailed plans to make the best use
of their new extension, and wanted a design with clean lines. The
fact that we were working with a space that hadnt been built yet
meant we had to be as accurate as we could be, but then leave
a tolerance at each end of the units, which wed fll when ftting.

Can you describe their chosen cabinetry?

The Linear range is constructed using traditional techniques but
with an in-frame design and a hand-painted fnish. Slab doors
mean that the kitchen can be styled in a modern way, while the
island ofers a good workspace and casual seating. Jessica knew
what she wanted to put in every cupboard, and our task was to
make sure everything ftted and was easily accessible.

What about the worksurfaces and colour scheme?

We recommended a thin grey Caesarstone worktop to help Gripping stuff
accentuate the long, sleek lines of the units and also to get away Loft steel bar handles by
Harvey Jones are mounted
from the standard 30mm thickness. The units are painted in horizontally to accentuate the
Duluxs Green Stone oil-based eggshell, which is hard-wearing cabinetry and worktops clean lines
and doesnt show up marks easily. Its muted shade complements
the stainless steel appliances, for a calm rather than abrasive feel.

Whats your advice when choosing a designer?

Find someone you connect with and can talk to openly and
freely about what you want. You need to understand each other
completely for an end result that you both love. Its great when
a client comes to us with Jessica and Robs level of detail and Shelf life
planning, as it gives us something to really run with. To save money, Jessica and

Focus | People
Getting the proportions right is one of the
biggest challenges when it comes to designing
a kitchen. If youve got a large room, you need to
ensure the island doesnt look too big. Im a great
fan of putting the hob on the island with an
extractor fan above to help break up the space.
I dont put sinks on islands, as its where everyone
hangs out and no one wants to see dirty dishes!
Good kitchen design requires a carefully
thought-out layout. Its awkward walking from
one end of the room to the other when cooking,
so the fridge and the oven should be well-
positioned for easy access. There also needs
to be enough space for people to sit and chat
while youre preparing meals, without getting
in the way. Islands are perfect for this.
Lighting is hugely important, especially for
entertaining. I have mostly recessed spotlights in
my kitchen, and pendants over the island unit for
added softness. People often go overboard with
lighting, though a lot of kitchens are overlit.
One of the worst things is shadows when youre
cooking. Avoid this by positioning spotlights
correctly overhead. Under-shelf lighting is also
a good idea in a galley kitchen.

how accessibility and a strong layout lie at
the heart of good kitchen design
projects, so it was important to gain experience
in structural work as well as decorating.
In my early years at Charles Hammond
Interior Design, I bought and renovated my frst
fat. I then decided Id gain more know-how by
doing up another one, so I bought and sold a
home every year for the next few years. Working
on my own properties helped me build up a huge
amount of invaluable knowledge.
I was an easy client. Id get very excited about
doing up a property and couldnt wait to move
on to the next one. But, with a family to consider,
we settled in our current home 16 years ago.
The property used to be 10 bedsits, which we
converted. Years later we bought part of the
house next door, which had also been divided
into fats. Its been my biggest project to date,
and I took a much bolder approach with the
design, mixing modern and traditional elements.
My kitchen is open-plan. We knocked
through both sides of the chimney breast into
the fat next door to create a big kitchen-diner.
Ive got three children, so we spend a lot of time
cooking and entertaining. I designed my own
cabinetry, the doors are stained in black and the
worktops are black stone. The foor is a giant
chequerboard lino in black and brown, and Ive
used cream rectangle wall tiles for a softer feel.
Im not a big fan of
bright colours. Ive
noticed a trend for units
painted in pink or purple,
which youre bound to
go of after a couple
of years. I love an
old-fashioned Carrara
marble top with either
a neutral shade or
dark grey or black
underneath.
Getting
fooring
right isnt
easy. As
its heavily
used, the
material
needs to
be sturdy.
Stone isnt
a great
option in this
country as it can
be quite hard and
cold-looking. If you
go for a wood foor,
make sure its properly sealed.
I built a larder unit of my kitchen
and its been the best thing Ive ever done.
Im installing larders on virtually every job Im
doing now. Mine is a walk-in cupboard tiled
from foor to ceiling with slate shelves, so
you can see exactly where everything is.
Unless youre not a proper cook, the
kitchen should be a space where you can
easily access everything you need.
My top tip for the kitchen is try to avoid
over-cluttering. Dont add too much cabinetry
or go for over-designed cupboards that limit
what you can store inside them. And dont
be scared of leaving things out in your
kitchen. Id also recommend positioning
your units higher than normal about 95cm
to 1m. I do this in all my schemes to prevent
clients having to bend over. It also gives

a stronger-looking design.

acob Krichefski had big plans for the kitchen-diner of his
familys new home, but it was six years before he could put
them into action. When my partner Abi, our children and I
moved in, the kitchen was in the basement at the back, along
with a playroom and cellar, he says. The rooms didnt work for
us, but it took a while to save the money for my rather ambitious vision.
Jacobs idea was to knock through the jumble of basement rooms and
add a lofty, glazed extension at the back to create an open-plan kitchen-
diner and living space with views over the garden. He had a clear vision of
how it would look. We wanted a minimal, Scandinavian-style kitchen
because for so long wed put up with a shabby, messy room, says Jacob.
Having visited various kitchen companies, the couple opted for Bulthaup.
We loved the clean lines of the B1 cabinetry and the fact that it was
handleless jumped out at us. Its simplicity was aesthetically very pleasing.
When it came to the layout, Jacob let designer Andrew Crowe take the
reins. We talked about what we needed and where to put the island, he
says. I was keen to have a bench and dining table on one side of the room,
and it made sense for the island to mirror them. We also wanted it to separate
the cooking and entertaining areas, so its orientation was led by that.
Efcient use of the space was important, too. Everything had to be
centrally located: pots and pans under the hob; utensils to hand all within
easy reach, says Jacob. I was very keen to use the full height of the space,
too, so theres also a lot of tall storage, although weve had to invest in a
couple of stepladders because were both too short to reach them!

How did you translate Jacobs original brief?
Jacob already had a clear idea of what he wanted to achieve, which
made life much easier for me as a designer because all I needed to
do was realise his vision for a clean, minimalist yet functional kitchen.
When planning, we always have in mind whether the kitchen will be
incorporated into a larger living space, and its vital that the look
of the scheme is considered as part of the overall efect.

Was designing the layout a straightforward process?

At Bulthaup Mayfair, we often install kitchens into period properties
that have been developed and adapted to suit modern living, while
retaining the character of the building. With this in mind, we keep
layouts simple and dont over-design, which usually has the most
dramatic efect. My approach is always to create a stunning kitchen
and not simply to pack in as many units as possible wall to wall as
though we were selling carpet. In Jacobs kitchen, I used blocks of
tall and base furniture, supported with the clean, rectangular lines
of the island, to give the overall space the impact it deserved.

Why choose this particular cabinetry?

After discussions about how the kitchen would be used, Jacob
decided on our B1 range of furniture. This ofered both the soft feel
of a quality lacquer fnish in alpine white, and the practicality and
beauty of Corian worktops. The tall and wall units were extended
to create a shadow gap above, which accentuates the rooms height.
A structural column was concealed by bringing wall units forward
and continuing the door fronts above the extended worktop.

How did you incorporate extra storage?

Jacob was brave enough to go with a double-depth island, allowing
for pan drawers on the cooking side and additional storage under
the extended worktop, which in turn created a seating area.

What determined the position of the appliances?

The idea of the working triangle in kitchen design is a little old hat,

ometimes, a fresh coat of paint is
all it takes to reinvigorate a
lacklustre scheme. But there are
occasions when a complete
overhaul is the only solution. that
was certainly deborah Colberts thinking,
when she and her husband, Paul, elected to
move the kitchen in their georgian farmhouse
from the front of the property to the back.
After 10 years, our old scheme was tired
beyond belief, explains deborah. i was bored
with the layout and desperate for an island. As
there was no room to accommodate one and
we were planning a new design anyway, we
decided to go for something totally diferent.
the couples home ofce a stable block in
its previous incarnation, which led into the
utility room and the garden beyond seemed
like a more natural location for a kitchen. the
room also boasted some interesting original
features, including a vaulted exposed-beam
ceiling and a timber/wrought-iron stable
partition. there was also room for that
all-important island deborah had craved.
usually the decor is secondary to larger
considerations such as cabinetry but, in this
case, the whole scheme was inspired by a
striking wallpaper by studio Printworks,
and a blue Fired earth paint. A friend of
deborahs, who works for an interiors
magazine, used the wallpaper on a photo
shoot and gave her what was left over. it was
very expensive and i had to buy a couple more
rolls before hanging it in our home ofce,
says deborah. so we thought it would be a
shame to take it down when the space became
a kitchen. the Colberts chose a neutral
schller kitchen to temper the blue, but opted
for a hi-gloss fnish to keep the look modern.
the overall efect is a surprising, yet
pleasing juxtaposition of old and new. unlike
our old kitchen, i enjoy spending time in
here, says deborah. its much quieter, but
somehow feels closer to the rest of the house.

location of their original kitchen from
the front of the house to the converted
adjoining stable wing at the rear. They love
to entertain, but the existing kitchen couldnt
accommodate large family gatherings and
dinner parties, so we switched rooms to
create a larger, more sociable space.
Were there many challenges?
Yes, there were a few. The whole space
required a complete rewire but the fuse
box was some distance away and only
accessible via a narrow crawl space in the
eaves. This certainly provided the electrician
with a challenge! One of the couples main
requirements was an island with a hob and
space for bar stools. To get power across to
it meant lifting and relaying the existing wood
fooring, as they wanted to retain it. The
plumbing was non-existent but, fortunately,
the utility room was adjacent, which made
installing a new system fairly straightforward.
Did any of the original architectural
elements pose problems?
With the vaulted ceiling, it was impossible
to install a conventional island extractor so
I suggested a Moon cooker hood by Best,
suspended from the main beam. We used
60mm chunky shelving with integrated LED
lighting to create an attractive yet practical
solution to an irregular-shaped corner. A
matching 60mm trim around the tall units
allowed us to create a design line that follows
the top of the stable partition.
Which materials and fnishes
were used and why?
The doors are a hi-gloss lacquer in Trufe
Brown from Schllers Gala range complete
with ultra-slim, full-width steel handles. This
door style and colour choice harmonised
beautifully with the stables original features.
For the worksurfaces, we chose Daria from the
Silestone Nebula series to blend with the units.
How important was storage?
Cupboard space was key for Deborah and
Paul, as it was limited in their old scheme.
A pull-out larder, corner cupboards, deep,
wide drawers, and lift-up glass wall units
really helped to maximise storage potential.
Why is this design such a success?
Retaining the stable partition created a
novel and informal division between the
work zone and dining area, but the cleverly
designed contemporary cabinetry linked it
to both spaces perfectly. The island provides
more storage and the breakfast bar overhang
at the end of it creates a sociable link between
the dining area and kitchen.

Wood works nterior designer Fiona McKnight loves a project and
A chunky breakfast bar is the social its a good thing, because she readily admits her
centre of the kitchen. The raised Edwardian home in west London was an absolute mess
height and wood fnish set it apart when she and her partner Patrick Spence bought it four
from the islands food-prep area
years ago. The house belonged to the same family for 60
years, but most recently it had been divided up into two fats,
recalls Fiona. It was on the market for more than a year before we
came along, and a lot of structural work and attention was needed
to turn it back into a family home. Attracted by the large rooms
and high ceilings, and with Fiona keen to take on a restoration job,
the couple pressed ahead with their purchase.
The existing ground-foor kitchen dated back to the 1970s and
was one of a series of small rooms at the back of the house, which
were spread over seven diferent foor levels there was even a loo
tucked behind a curtain. From the start, this part of the house was
the couples priority. We wanted an open-plan kitchen and dining
space for everyday use, but it also had to be smart enough for
entertaining, with lots of natural light and easy access to the
garden, explains Fiona. The days of having a traditional dining
room separated from the kitchen are long gone.
By extending at the side of the house, demolishing all the
internal walls between the small rooms and levelling out the foor,
the couple created a large room that stretched across the entire
width of the rear of the property. They added foor-to-ceiling glass
bifold doors to maximise the amount of daylight and make the
room feel even bigger important for a city home where space was
at a premium. I wanted to be able to open the front door and see
all the way out to the garden at the back, says Fiona.
Having worked with Roundhouse on some of her interior
design projects, Fiona knew where to turn when it came to her
own kitchen. I had a clear idea of the layout, with a substantial
family-size island, and Roundhouse helped me refne it to produce
something that works beautifully, she says. I love the clean lines
of the cabinetry, and the way that we were able to add interest with
diferent worksurface materials and dark wood details.

What was your brief?
I was asked to create a relaxed, urban space and make
the most of the light and access to the garden. The
room had to be family-friendly, smart enough for
entertaining and fow well from the rest of the house,
with the island and garden visible from the front door.
How did you come up with the layout?
Fiona wanted to be able to see the garden when she
was cooking, so that dictated the position of the range
cooker and sink. The island is the rooms focal point
and is surrounded on two sides by a raised breakfast
bar, which creates a social space and defnes the area
for the cook and for everyone else. To maintain a light,
open feel, we built the tall cabinetry, which houses the
fridge freezer, on the wall opposite the bifold doors so
it doesnt obstruct the views of the garden.
Tell us about the units
We went for something pared back and simple,
with clean lines. The handleless matt lacquer Urbo
cabinetry is fnished with slender fnger channels in
wenge the accents of wood add warmth and prevent
the design looking clinical. Storage is key in a family
kitchen, and we made sure that the kitchen packs
in plenty of cupboards and drawer space, while
maintaining its uncluttered, understated feel.
And the materials used
Style and practicality were key. The matt lacquer fnish
on the cabinets is velvety smooth, but also hard-wearing
and easy to wipe clean, which is important when young
children are around. The mix of worksurfaces adds
interest and diferentiates the cooking and social areas.
On the main run of units, we used classically elegant
marble, and on the island prep area, a robust, practical
stainless steel. The breakfast bar is made of solid wenge
with an oiled fnish, which adds rich colour and contrast.
Are there any special details included?
A stainless steel tambour unit in the corner holds all
the worktop appliances, enhancing the uncluttered
feel. We also ftted sliding cupboard doors behind the
bar stools, so its easy to reach inside without having to
move the seats. The glazed cupboard on one end of
the island is another fnishing touch. Designed to store
Fiona and Patricks glassware, it looks more attractive
when seen from the terrace than a plain panel would.
What do you think of the kitchen now?
Its stylish and practical, with all the storage and space
that a growing family needs. Were sure it will
withstand the robust nature of life with young children,
and still look as good in fve years as it does now.

kitchens. Each cut, each plank, is totally unique not even natural stone can beat

it for versatility, colour variation and pattern plus its far more tactile. While

painted fnishes have their place, the real splendour of wood is in the exquisiteness of the grain.

A new breed of designers are making the most of woods inherent beauty, using it to add drama

and interest to both classic and contemporary schemes. Knots and gnarls, far from being a sign

of irregularity, are increasingly introduced to add character and texture. There are so many ways

wood can be used within the kitchen: for worktops, foors, as veneers on cabinetry, stand-alone pieces

of furniture such as a character island, panelling and even splashbacks, too. Good-quality wood

can last a lifetime, however all wood needs proper maintenance to keep it looking its best. But with

a plethora of wonderful qualities and intrinsic authenticity, wood is defnitely worth the efort.

Some woods change colour, becoming slightly
darker and richer over time, adding more
warmth as they age. Theres a huge number
of diferent timbers to choose from, including
the ubiquitous yet endlessly classic oak and
exotic timbers zebrano and ebony. Use them
on their own, or combine with other woods
or solid-colour furniture for a striking efect.
Mixing wood with wood
There are many diferent ways to use wood.
By far the most popular, for traditional and
modern schemes alike, is to create contrast.
Solid wood can be combined with painted
cabinetry, or used to frame a coloured kitchen.
Another way to employ contrast is to set a
light-coloured plank against darker timber.
Alternatively, consider wrapping. Wrapping
creates a uniform look and can be achieved
by using the same wood for the foor as the
cabinets, says Louisa Forsyth, senior sales
designer, Kitchens International. The so-called
sandwich efect is also popular. It features
worksurfaces and fooring with a very similar
texture and tone alongside cabinetry in a
contrasting wood veneer or diferent material.

Theres a widely held assumption that solid
wood is always a better option than veneer but
thats not always the case. Often, wood doors
veneers are frequently used. Well-made veneers
can be stronger than natural wood, and have
been used by furniture makers over the years for
high-end pieces, but the main beneft of veneers
is visual. They ofer the opportunity to use a
contrasting wood panel in a characterful
timber such as sycamore as an insert to a solid
wood door. Book-matching is a favourite method
in timber kitchens, creating a highly eye-
catching look. Here, timber is sliced into very
thin sections then applied together in a mirror
image, creating a dramatic butterfy efect, as
though you have opened a book at its centre
pages. This enhances the patterns and colours
of the grain, refecting the unique beauty that
has taken several years to develop, says Jane
Stewart, design director at Mowlem & Co.
fLoor LeveL
A natural timber foor ofers many options,
from the quintessential style of oak narrow
boards to the contemporary feel of a wide plank
in walnut. The plank sizes available will depend
on the type of wood you choose. Oak ofers the
greatest selection and is available in anything
from small parquet blocks to 4m-long planks.
Wood foors are either solid wood or engineered,
the latter is the best choice for kitchens. The
biggest beneft over a solid foor is that the
boards are more stable and less likely to twist
and warp with fuctuations in temperature
and humidity. If youre sold on solid timber,
hardwoods like oak dent and mark less easily.

Caring for wood

Solid wood can react to moisture
and heat. Some designers prefer
to keep it out of wet areas entirely,
opting for veneers instead. Water
left to linger on wooden worktops
will cause black stains that are tricky
to shift. And if water is allowed to
penetrate a lacquered surface, the
wood can split and the grain can
become raised. Using trivets will
prevent heat damage on worktops.
Instil a shoes-of policy for wooden
foors and use a hard fooring
attachment when vacuuming. Also,
ft protective felt pads on wooden
furniture legs to prevent scratching.

G RADES FOR FLOORING care it will age well compared to alternatives

Grading refers to the amount and size of visible
knots, colouration and other natural marks
within wood. Each grade gives a slightly
diferent look but doesnt impact on the quality.
The top grade is Prime or AB, which is cut from
the centre of the log, providing a very uniform
appearance with few knots and little colour
variation. Select or ABC is next, then Natural
or ADCD and Rustic or CD. The knottier grades
are more afordable but dont assume prime
is best often a bit of character is a good thing.
A CLASSIC WORKTOP
Wood works especially well with painted
cabinetry and is ideal worktop material. Oiled
wood is the best option, as when treated with
like granite. All wood worktops will need
resanding and oiling at regular intervals.
Walnut, wenge and iroko, all hard/darkwoods,
add a dramatic look and are a practical choice
for worksurfaces. A popular feature of many
modern designs is to incorporate a built-in
wooden butchers block to stone worktops to
break up the run of worksurface area. The
durability of wood makes it ideal for use in food
preparation, says Naomi Dean, furniture and
showroom designer, Harvey Jones. Butchers
blocks are usually made from the end grain,
where the boards are arranged so the end of
the grain can be seen from the top. This reveals
fresh patterns that are diferent from those
seen in cabinetry, fooring and wood for other

uses. These are more typically made from face
grain, which occurs when woodworkers slice
a section of wood of the end of a log. All wood
expands and contracts with changes in
temperature and moisture levels, causing it
to bow or split. To prevent this, the wood is
pre-dried to get the moisture level down, then
cut into blocks. These are then glued together
to create a sheet thats much more stable than
a single piece of timber. Mark Wilkinsons
butterfy tops make a design feature of the
double dovetail joints that fx together the
individual staves. Tongue-and-groove worktops
are increasingly popular and in dramatic,
dark wood extremely eye-catching.
WOOD FOR WALLS
Wood is arguably the original surface material
for walls think panelling or tongue-and-groove
and is probably best reserved for dining or
living zones in an open-plan space, away from
the heat and splashes of the kitchen. Today,
youre less likely to see wood panelling in its
classic form, than you are large banks of
foor-to-ceiling units, which create a bold efect.
This is where book-matched veneers really come
into their own. The tongue-and-groove look is
more about texture and lends a Scandinavian or
New England beach house feel. And, because it
is usually painted, its the best choice for anyone

Clients love the look of them, but theyre not
the most practical option for a busy kitchen, and
take a considerable amount of time and efort to

Furniture. Over time, water and oil can mark
and stain the surface. You cant use a liquid
cleaner on a wooden splashback like you would
on tiles or glass, but you can sand back and re-oil

of untreated, bare wood and has a soft, tactile
feel. Gloss and lacquer can be a practical option
for worktops however, if the surface gets
damaged, it will need to be stripped and
reapplied professionally. Oil gives a softer look
and adds depth to the natural wood tone. An
oiled fnish is arguably best suited to a kitchen
environment, especially for worktops and
foors. Although wood will need regular
applications to ensure it remains stain free,
if you do end up with marks, you can simply
sand the wood back and re-oil it yourself.
SPECIAL EFFECTS
Smoking or fuming (often using ammonia)
gives wood a deep, rich colour some timber is
thermo-treated to give the same efect without
the use of chemicals. Scorched woods (scorched
using a blowtorch) are one of the latest trends
in fooring, ofering a unique texture that fuses
rustic chic with an urban feel. Liming is back in
fashion, too, giving a contemporary, yet rustic
whitewashed efect. Distressing foor planks
gives a worn look, while hand-scraping creates
an aged feel. Both bring a rough-luxe aesthetic
without the hassle of sourcing a vintage foor.
BE ECO SAvvy
Buy all surface wood from managed forests
if you can, carrying the FSC logo (Forest
Stewardship Council) to ensure sustainability.
Khrs recently brought out the frst dual-
certifed foor. Its FSC and Fairtrade, making it
both environmentally and socially responsible.
USING RECLAIMED wOOD
Recycling and reusing is big news in interiors
and particularly so in kitchens. Reclamation
yards have branched out into using reclaimed
wood to make kitchen cabinetry. One of the
biggest, Lassco, has a pair of full-time joiners
making kitchen islands, tables and other
furniture from salvaged timber. Old science
laboratory worktops make for an interesting
feature, adding an on-trend industrial feel
Retrouvius is a good source. The majority of
these worktops are made from iroko, which is
incredibly hardwearing and more resistant
than most types of wood to water. High-end
kitchen companies are also starting to see the
benefts of reclaimed wood, with Chuchwood,
Roundhouse and Holloways of Ludlow often
making use of pre-loved timber.

from their kitchens. All will defnitely be
looking for superb functionality and storage,
plus a welcoming space for guests. Some may
enjoy having the hob at the heart of the action

their own space. A robust kitchen made from

to provide a streamlined cooking hub, with
plenty of workspace in between. Appliances are
also an important part of the mix. Consider
fexibility switching between steam and hot-
air cooking in an oven or from a griddle plate
to an induction domino hob, for example and
capacity, so that you can batch-cook or handle
a multi-course dinner with ease. Be honest with
yourself about what you will use. Extras such as
tepanyaki grills are only great if you do favour
Asian cooking, while a range cooker works best
for large families or those who love to bake.
Finally, dont overlook comfort. A good
lighting scheme is a must, as is powerful
extraction your guests will thank you for it.

TYPES OF LIGHTING
A good kitchen lighting system needs at least two elements:
bright, shadow-free task lighting for safe cooking and
preparation, and atmospheric illumination to create mood,
highlight architectural features and make the room feel
more inviting. Look at all areas of your kitchen and think
about the activities that will happen in each space, advises
interior designer Sarah Ward. Some areas, such as food

lighting, while others, such as the dining area, call for mood
and accent lighting. If people are going to be chatting to you
over a glass of wine while youre cooking, youll want them
to sit in a softer light so they can relax.

Task lighTing

iz and Adam Holes kitchen was
previously a very cramped, low-
ceilinged space with old, pale blue
chipboard cabinets. Next to this
was a compact dining room and an
entrance porch, which quickly became a
dumping ground for shoes. Having all these
small rooms meant the layout wasnt sociable,
says Liz. The low door frames were a real issue,
too, and I was constantly shouting Duck!.
Realising that the solution lay in knocking
the three rooms into one, the couple approached

that the company would undertake the entire
project, including building work, explains Liz.
The kitchen was also opened up to the roof,
creating a further feeling of space.
For the cabinetry, the couple opted for a
series of base cupboards and foating shelves.
We didnt want any wall units as we preferred
the idea of grabbing a mug or a glass without
opening a cupboard, says Liz. I also liked the
sense of space achieved without wall units.

Was your brief straightforward?
Liz and Adam wanted a relatively clean and simple
design, and didnt present us with a long list of
requirements. So, yes, the brief was fairly open-
ended. As a design-led company, this gives us the
chance to explore a few diferent ideas and get as
much as we can out of the space for the client.
What interesting features are there?
As the space doesnt have a chimney breast, it
was important to give it a focal point. To make
the mantel around the Aga look authentic, there
are no sharp corners and everything is softly
rounded. The uprights include cupboards,
which provide useful storage for oils and spices.

Why did you make the base units either
side of the Aga deeper than the rest?
I dont like to see one long run of cabinets that
are all the same size, and the beauty of an entirely
bespoke kitchen is that you can vary the depths
of the drawers. Here, we created deep drawers
either side of the Aga to store pots and pans, and
also provide extra worksurface space. Visually,
it makes the design look much more striking.
Tell us about the circular peninsula
This makes the kitchen a sociable space, as guests
can perch at it while Liz and Adam are cooking. It
also defnes this space from both the dining area
and the entrance. We used pippy oak for the

pedestal and worktop; it has a very characterful,
distinctive grain and is a warm contrast to the
cooler granite we used for the preparation areas.
What about the rest of the cabinetry?
We believe a kitchen should outlive its owners so
construction is crucial to us, and we use traditional
methods such as dovetail joints, hardwood door
frames and butt hinges. The large larder enables
food to be kept in one place, rather than in three
or four cupboards, making fnding things and
unloading shopping much easier. Whenever
we fnish a project and ask clients what they
love most about their new kitchen, they always
say how much they enjoy their larder.

W
hen kitchen designer Scott Nicholson of Chamber
Furniture met the owners of this house, they told
him no-one had been able to come up with a kitchen
design they liked. Looking at their architects plans
to convert a series of small rooms into one large space
with a new extension, Scott could see why. Three big supporting pillars in
the new room were creating problems, he says. Often when I start a project,
I inherit features people might consider negative whether its a structural
pillar or an awkward door position. My job is to turn that into a positive.
Two of the pillars couldnt be moved, but Scott was able to join the third onto
one of the other supports. He then designed a central island around the
main structure in the room, turning it into a sociable hub with a breakfast
bar and drinks zone. A U-shaped layout of furniture around the island
provides more storage and housing for appliances. My clients didnt want
anything fussy or embellished, says Scott. Our goal was to create a room
with elegance and warmth, and I think weve achieved that here.

Tell us more about the central island
The pillar was clad in the same polished quartz surface as the worktops for
a uniform fnish, and to allow us to build in the wine storage unit with fridge
drawers below. The island then sweeps around it on three sides, providing
useful prep space and a raised bar area, as well as a place for serving drinks,
out of the way of the main cooking zone on the other side of the island.
Can you explain why you chose these fnishes?
We wanted a modern look, but with warmth and character, too. All white can
look clinical and bland, so its a good idea to add some contrast. We chose
rich walnut veneer, bookmatched to show of the natural beauty of the grain.
And the design of the cabinetry?
The furniture is streamlined with fush-ftted doors for a clean, contemporary
look. We added some curved elements to the end of the runs to soften the
efect. Simple horizontal bar handles fnish the base cabinets; the wall
cupboards were handleless more handles would have been too much.
Tell us about the fridges and larders
These are fush-ftted into the wall and integrated behind smoothly panelled
doors. The key with bulky things is to recess them into walls, rather than
letting them create bulky obstructions, which tend to look unplanned.
Whats behind the success of this project?
Once you work with the structure of the room, rather than against it, things
fall into place. As soon as I mapped out how the pillars could be incorporated,
it was obvious that the table would be best sited under the roof lantern.
Then it was a matter of building the remaining units, adopting a less is more
policy. It was important that these suited the scale of the space we used
fewer cabinets, but made each larger, in keeping with the size of the room.

W
alking into this Victorian home
in a Nottinghamshire village,
Kerrie and Matthew Wilkins
fell in love with its high ceilings
and light-flled rooms. But that
was before they reached the rear of the house. As we
explored the ground foor, we said, Love it! explains
Kerrie. But we were then crestfallen when we saw the
higgledy-piggledy small rooms at the back, complete
with fre escape and institutional washroom. The house
had been a care home a few years back, and we could tell.
But after the initial shock, we saw its potential.
It wasnt long before the couple completed the
purchase and renovations began. By demolishing
internal walls and adding steel structural joists in the
ceiling, they were able to knock several rooms into one
to create a kitchen double the size of the original. It
feels much larger, and better suited to the way we live as
a family and like to entertain our friends, says Kerrie.
The couple quickly settled on Alexander Lewis as
their kitchen company of choice. I like things simple
and plain I cant stand twiddly bits and Alexander
Lewis creates classic Shaker-style furniture which is
timeless, says Kerrie. Both she and Matthew are busy
GPs, and with their two young children, Kate, nine,
and Max, six, plus springer spaniel Harry and
Labradoodle Lola, life can get hectic. For us, its
important to have a home that is calm and relaxing, Tranquil tones

How did you design the layout?

The island is the focal point, with a prep zone on one side and
an area for bar stools on the other. Because the work space is
orientated towards the rest of the room, the cook can join in
the conversation with family and friends at the bar stools or
dining table, without feeling like theyre stuck in the corner.
Walkways are wide to create a sense of fow around the room
and avoid pinch points. The prep sink is separate from the main
one, so the island doesnt get cluttered with dirty pots and pans.

Can you tell us about the chimney breast?

The traditional route is to build a range cooker into a chimney
breast, but we wanted to create a more modern feel with clean
lines here, so we installed two ovens topped with a fush-ftted
induction hob. A linear overmantel and greeny-grey glass
splashback catch the eye, but in quite a restrained way.

Was it important to integrate the other appliances?

I prefer to hide as much as possible, because rows of built-in
gadgets seem to me to detract from the furniture. They also
make a room feel very kitcheny, which may not suit an
open-plan space where you also want to entertain and relax.

is tucked into the larder cupboard, and the ovens are below the

counter, so not visible from the dining area. The sleek hob is
minimalist in design and fts almost seamlessly into the worktop.

What type of storage did you include?

Storage was something Kerrie felt strongly about, as an essential
part of creating a calm feel. We used a mix of drawers and
cupboards to provide diferent options, along with a section of
open four-box shelving to add interest to a run of wall cabinets.

Tell us about the cabinetry and surfaces

Shaker-style furniture is timeless and has the unfussy look Kerrie
and Matthew wanted. We built a series of cabinet pieces in the
room, including the fridge freezer unit. This creates more of an
unftted furniture look, which works well in a period home when
you want it to seem as if the cabinetry has always been there.
The units are painted in two shades of grey, with the island in the
slightly darker shade for variation. The Caesarstone quartz
worksurface is hard wearing, so a great choice for a family
kitchen, and its slender profle adds another modern touch.

What were your main objectives when you
started planning your new kitchen?
To increase the light levels in the basement space. This was
achieved by digging a generous light well in the garden. Also,
being partially disabled, the rooms layout had to be practical.
I do sufer if I have to walk miles to cook a meal. So although the
space is large, we kept the working area tight. On the end wall,
mid-height units conceal the washing machine and a unit that does
fzzy fltered water. The rest of the room is divided into a dining
area and a library snug with a sofa and lots of recipe books.
What inspired your cabinet selection?
Im a big fan of Hckers cabinetry. Its exceptionally well made but
afordable, too. I know that matt fnishes are more popular now,
but I love gloss. Its easy to clean and refects light to create a
brighter environment, which was obviously important to us.
Tell us about the worktop materials
The main surface is solid granite; its very loud and characterful. I
prefer natural stone to man-made stones, which lack personality.
On the lower levels, Ive used a tropical hardwood called Bubinga
because its more forgiving on plates and elbows than stone.
Which appliances did you choose?
Pim is Thai so we eat a lot of Oriental dishes and mainly cook on
the hobs. Wed have loved induction but we have a lot of great
pans that arent suited to it and couldnt bear to give them up. We
mostly use the Miele combi-microwave when cooking for two, but
theres also a ferce Schifni oven in the island that comes into its
own for roasting when were entertaining. We chose Sub-Zero
cooling, but theres a Miele fridge racked out for wine that doubles
as back-up food storage when Pim holds a cookery demonstration.
How have you decorated the space?
The palette was inspired by the Mies van der Rohe chairs. We had
the feature wall colour-matched to the Tibetan tigers artwork, which
is actually an antique door. These colours make it cosy in winter.
What do you love most about the room now?
This space fulfls all my kitchen fantasies. Its incredibly functional,
a pleasure to work in and a great place to relax and entertain.
