Abstract

Load hanger is use in laboratories for different experiments and there are many ways to
manufacture it. On large scale it must be manufactured by casting because for production on
large scale casting is suitable for manufacturing it although it requires high labor skills and there
are also more risks or safety factors in it. But on small level joining processes are use to
manufacture it because it is easy and cheap and no high skills are required to manufacture it.

1. Introduction
Weight hangers are used in student lab classes, to teach physics and other sciences. The slotted
masses and weight hanger combination allows a student to quickly create any desired amount of
mass, to use in experiments involving force, acceleration, and mass. There are also many other
experiments in other fields where a variable hanging mass comes in handy. It is just a rod with
one end bent and the other end has a circular base it can be of any material and dimensions.
Mostly the base and rod are of same materials and are joined together by welding or other
techniques.

2. Purpose of the Project

The main purpose of this project is use of different manufacturing techniques to manufacture a
load hanger which is commonly use in labs. The length of hanger should be 250mm and the
diameter of rod should be 20mm.

3. Methodology
There are many methods used for the manufacturing of a load hanger which are:

3.1 Casting
Casting is a process in which you can manufacture the whole part together you donot have to
join or assemble the parts. In casting a mold of sand is used and the metal is melted in the
furnace and then ladled and poured into the cavity of the sand mold, which is formed by the
pattern. The sand mold separates along a parting line and the solidified casting can be removed.

You can make a pattern of hanger and then pour the melted metal into the cavity to get a load
hanger.

3.2 Welding
Welding is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials, usually metals or
thermoplastics, by causing fusion, which is distinct from lower temperature metal-joining
techniques such as brazing and soldering, which do not melt the base metal.

This technique can also be used for the manufacturing of load hanger we can get rod and base of
different or materials and then we can weld them to get a final product.

3.3 Assemble
It is also a technique use for joining two parts together. But it is not a permanent joint you can
assemble and disassemble the product any time you want. This technique is also used to
manufacture load hanger you can make threads on outer side of rod and inner side of base metal
and join them to get a final product.

3.4 Method used
The method used in our case is both welding and assembling. We get a rod of steel and base of
aluminum. To make hook another rod is used and bending operation is used to bent it and make a
hook. This hoke is then welded with steel rod. Then using drill a hole of 10mm is made on base
plate and rod is inserted in it. In our case our rod has threads so we used a bolt to join it with the
base plate. For manufacturing of hanger welding and assemble is used and casting is not used
because it is a expensive process and it also require high labor skills.

4. Conclusion
To manufacture any thing there are many methods but cheap and easy method is always
preferred. Although there were any other techniques use to manufacture load hanger but we
choose the easy and cheap technique that is the mixture of welding and assemble.
