Tri-Carb Barrels
When severe abrasion and/or corrosion is experienced, Tri-
Carb barrels are recommended for longer life. Tri-Carb is a
chemically-applied silicon carbide and nickel coating, which is
extremely resistant to wear and corrosion. It is a particularly cost
effective method when hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or carbon dioxide
(CO2) is present.
Barrels coated with Tri-Carb provide these advantages:
Higher effective hardness.
Tri-Carb surface yields a Rockwell hardness of C72-C75.
Lowers coefficient of friction.
Extends barrel life.
Continuous and uniform layer of protection on inside and
outside surfaces, including threads.

Monel Pins
Monel pins and super-hard finish Mo-Hard plungers give
extra long life in the most corrosive wells.
The plunger area most vulnerable to corrosion is the pin. With-
out protection, corrosive elements will quickly chew through the
LOW
threaded wall and destroy pump efficiency. COEFFICIENT

To help overcome this problem, Trico offers the Series 397
Plunger. Prior to final grind of the plunger, precision machined
Monel pins, with their inherent corrosion-resistant properties,
are securely attached to each end of the plunger.
This combination results in a super-hard plunger with superior

Holddowns
Cup-Type Holddown
The Trico Cup-Type Holddown seals and retains insert pumps
on the top or bottom with pressure actuated cups. It is the most
popular holddown style with standard cups made from nylon
and other materials available. Close component tolerances are
maintained to ensure compatibility with all API seating nipples.
Mechanical Holddown
The Trico Mechanical Holddown anchors and seals insert
pumps on top or bottom, or attaches to a tubing pump standing
valve as a mechanical holddown. Recommended for wells with
high bottomhole temperatures or wells requiring higher hold-
down forces than a cup-type holddown. API specifications are
rigidly held to ensure interchangeability with all API mechanical
lock seating nipples.
Features
Made from steel or stainless steel to API specifications.
Fits all RHB and RWB pumps for 2-3/8 and 2-7/8 inch
tubing.

The Clutched Top Seal is installed on any conventional bottom
holddown pump by inserting it between the top insert collar and
the rod guide cage. The tool sets by applying the weight of the
rods through the tool. To release, merely pick up the rod string
and the pump.
Valve Pullers
Trico Valve Pullers feature simple design, ease of replacement
in the field and sure operation even under adverse pumping
conditions. Available in 1-3/4, 2-1/4 and 2-3/4 inch sizes, in tap- VALVE PULLERS

HYDRAULIC PUMPS

HYDRAULIC PUMPS
BASIC DOWNHOLE INSTALLATIONS Fixed InsertIn this system, the downhole pump is run in on a
small string of tubing inside of the production tubing. Input
power fluid goes down the small, inner string, and production
plus exhausted power fluid returns up the annulus between the
two strings. Free gas is produced through the tubing-casing an-
nulus.
Fixed CasingIn this system, the downhole pump is run in on
any size tubing and landed on a casing packer. Input power fluid
goes down this tubing string and production plus exhausted
power fluid returns up the annulus. All free gas must be pro-
duced through the pump.
Free ParallelIn this system, two strings of tubing, con-
nected at the bottom with a crossover block, are run independ-
ently or simultaneously, and a retrievable standing valve is
inserted. The Free Pump is circulated down the larger of the
two strings by power fluid and on landing makes a seating seal
on the standing valve and an upper seal in a special collar. Con-
tinued power fluid circulation starts and operates the pumps en-
gine. Production plus exhausted power fluid goesthrough the
fluid crossover block and returns up the smaller tubing string.
Free gas is produced through the casing-tubing annulus.
Free CasingIn this system, one string of tubing is run and
landed on a casing packer. The Free Pump is circulated down
this string and in operation the exhausted power fluid plus pro-
duction is produced up the casing annulus. All free gas must be
produced through the pump.
Closed Power Fluid System (CPF)
The closed power fluid (CPF) system provides a method of re-
turning the exhausted power fluid from the downhole pumps
engine through a separate channel to the surface. Thus it does
not mingle with the produced fluid. In effect, the hydraulic power
fluid is in a closed circuit. The same fluid is used over and over
with only the addition of a small amount of make-up fluid. The
make-up fluid replaces the fluid used to lubricate the pump end

OPF CONFIGURATIONS lected from a wide variety of fluids available but most common is
clean produced crude oil or water. Because the power fluid in
the closed system does not mix with the production, the major
source of power fluid contamination is eliminated. Thus the CPF
system insures longer pump life by providing better quality
power fluid. In addition, the system simplifies well testing be-
cause the circulated power fluid does not need to be subtracted
from the return fluid to obtain net oil produced.

DUAL VESSEL UNIDRAULIC
The Trico UNIDRAULIC Dual Vessel Power Fluid Cleaning
Unit consists of a complete power fluid cleaning system pack-
aged on a single skid for maximum convenience in transporting
and installing. All equipment and controls are fully connected,
ready for operation.
Cleaning System
The dual vessel cleaning system employs a vertical accumula-
tor vessel to supply fluid under pressure to the hydrocyclone
where solids are removed.
The cleaned power fluid is stored in a horizontal reservoir ves-
sel, also under pressure, to supply suction fluid to the plunger
pump.
Both vessels are ASME Coded and are internally coated with 18
mils of epoxy phenolic for corrosion protection. Each has an el-
liptical manway, sight glasses with automatic gage cocks and
pre-set relief valves.
All primary control valves and piping are flanged and of welded
construction.

PRESSURE CONTROLLER
The Trico/Kobe Pressure Controller is a high-pressure, hydrau-
lic system control valve designed for maintaining a constant,
preselected upstream pressure regardless of changes in vol-
ume. It responds quickly to changing volume requirements and
has controlled dampening to prevent hunting and snap clos-
ing. The Pressure Controller can be used for a wide variety of
liquids crude oil, treated water, sea water and oil field brines.
Trico/Kobe Pressure Controllers maintain back pressures up to
5,000 psi. A scale graduated in psi allows quick and easy selec-
tion of pressure. Units are available in complete manifold

equipment is in place and operating in the well. The Y tool, called
so because of its unique shape, provides a piping arrangement
which offsets the pump, allowing survey tools to go straight through
to the bottom of the well. Surveys are recorded without disturbing
the pumps' original function, even in directional wells drilled up to 75
degrees. The Y tool also provides a method of blanking off while
the well is in a normal producing mode or while a survey is in pro-
cess.
The Y tool is useful for production operators in a number of moni-
toring applications, including the location of excessive water or gas
entry from undesirable subzone contributors, tracking water and
gas cap movement within a production reservoir, and monitoring
pressures, temperatures and fluid levels.
The Crossover Assembly has four major components:
Crossover The original crossover assembly is designed to run in
8-5/8 inch or larger casing on 2-7/8 inch tubing. Smaller crossover
assemblies are available for operation on 7 inch-26 lb. casing and 2-
3/8 inch tubing. A 3 inch, 9-5/8 inch unit has also been developed to
accommodate 5-1/2 inch pumps and motors and the running of 1-
11/16 inch survey tools.
The crossover body is streamlined using non-upset tubing and has
no internal shoulders where survey tools can hang up. The straight
portion is made of heavy seamless tubing to prevent fluid cutout.
Each unit, after complete assembly, is hydraulically tested for leaks
to above 3,000 psi. The tool incorporates a seating nipple that
houses a stainless steel seating ring and is capable of accommo-

past the fluid port of the crossover assembly, allowing produced
fluid to keep the neck washed free of sand. The function of this plug
is to blank off the instrument port section while the well is pumping
normally.
Running Plug The running plug is similar to the blanking plug,
except that a wire or recording line can be run through it. The lines
are normally 3/16 inches or 5/16 inches in size. A brass bushing in

bottom of the running plug containing slips sized to catch the survey
tool fishing neck. The survey tool and running plug can then be re-
moved from their seated position by alternate means and the well
returned to production after returning the blanking plug to its seated
position.

PUMP assembly providing a passageway for survey tools alongside the
submersible pump installation and into the producing zones. There
are no internal shoulders present throughout the assembly. The
tube is held straight and parallel to the installation by simply clamp-
ing it to the submersible unit with steel banding clamps. The bottom
of the pump instrument tube is cut at an angle and hangs at the bot-
tom of the pump installation. Instrument tubes may be joined to-
gether to obtain the correct overall length.

the desired depth in the tubing string. For hydrostatic head at the
drain, and determination of the proper shear unit (psi), multiply
.433 psi/ft. x drain depth and add 1,000 psi safety factor. Select
calculated shear unit or next higher unit if calculations exceed
shear pin values closest to calculated shear unit.

time from pulling a wet tubing string. When closed, it holds well
pressure internally and/or externally and offers full tubing I.D. and a
means to pump down the tubing to kill a gassy well before pulling
has begun.
Because it is mechanical instead of hydraulic, the R drain must
have a backup to actuate it in the hole and is used primarily with
Type R Tubing Anchors (tubing drains should always be run with
hydraulic tubing anchors).
Features/Advantages
Has a minimum number of parts and seals.
A friction pad holds the drain closed, safeguarding against ac-
cidental opening while running in.
A Teflon bearing ring reduces the friction normally found in
tools held in tension, eliminating 90% of the torque required to
turn the drain.
Operation
Before running in, make certain the drain is closed by turning the
sleeve left to the radial stop.
Install the R drain approximately two to three joints above the tub-
ing anchor (box thread up) to position the drain out of sand deposi-
tion and allow alignment above any offset in the anchor.
To open, relieve the tension in the tubing string (if the head permits)
and rotate the tubing to the right. A 310 rotation at the drain will
open the tool.

Control Leakage at the Wellhead using Patented*
Technology
The primary function of the Trico Hydro-Balanced Stuffing Box
is to provide a pressure lubricated area between a primary (pro-
vided by a conventional stuffing box) and a secondary seal with
a controlled biodegradable lubricant. This biodegradable lubri-
Conventional
cant can be either a fluid or grease. This pressure lubricated Single-Pack
area always remains hydraulically balanced with any well fluids Stuffing Box
or gases during the pumping cycle, thus preventing leakage
past the fluid seal packing.
Pressure Fluid

In traditional PC Pump applications, the stuffing box packing

seals receive no lubrication from the well fluids since the pol-
ished rod does not stroke down into fluid at the pumping tee
level. This design results in short life of the primary seals due to
heat and lack of lubrication which results in well fluids leaking af-
ter the seals fail. With the use of a Trico field retro-fit unit with a
pressure transmitter assembly to balance the pressure across
the secondary seal, the polished rod is continually lubricated
below the primary seal in the PC pump drive head. This lubrica- Check

Pressure lubrication with a known environmentally safe lubricant Packing and polished rod life will be extended.
Input horsepower requirements are reduced due to lower friction between the rod

penses are reduced.
1500 PSIG working pressure, 3000 PSIG maximum pressure May be used on any well with a test working pressure below 1500 PSIG
Biodegradable fluid version Automatically replenishes any lost fluids due to leaking packing. A 3000 PSIG low
level shut-off switch is also available to shut down the pumping unit.
Grease version Manual system. When packing leaks, grease must manually be pumped back into
the system. Pressurized grease will improve rod and packing life in progressive cav-
ity pumps.
Both versions use fluid seal packing as the secondary seal Seals are hydraulically actuated, and do not need excessive force for sealing. Re-
duced friction between packing and the polished rod will occur.
Both versions sold in retro-fit packages or assemblies Complete adaptation to any complete stuffing box, and product versatility.
