THE FIVE FACTORS

The Five Factors are derived from the simple understanding of the Five
Elements. These relationships govern matters relating to different
aspects of our lives. Start with your own Element as the reference
point and determine the interrelationship between your Element and
the other Five Elements.

Your own element is your Day Pillars Heavenly Stem. We also call this
the Day Master.

Wealth Star

Introduction

In this section, we will discuss in detail the most popular of the Five Factors: the
Wealth Star. Many people who go for a BaZi reading will almost certainly pop the
question When will I become rich?

The presence and quality of the Wealth Star (or Stars) in a BaZi Chart is a key
indicator of the wealth capacity of the individual in question. The Wealth Star
governs ones ability to generate wealth and also the aptitude, view and style
towards money related matters. You may know of people who believe that money
is the root of all evil. These inviduals view rich people as bad, greedy or
selfish. Other people may view money as a means towards a stable life and that
having more than enough money to sustain a good life, in turn, allows them to help
other people.

That the key determinant of this difference in how one views wealth is if the Wealth
Star in ones BaZi chart is when favourable or unfavourable. An unfavourable Wealth
Star in a chart means that the person inherently dislikes activities to do with money
and wealth generation, or has a negative view of money. Due to this mindset, this
person will have limited capacity or aptitude to generate substantial wealth. A
person with a favourable Wealth Star, however, will have a positive outlook and
concept of money. This person believes in the power of money and will have the
ability to manage, invest and as a result, grow his or her wealth!

Wealth Star

When one does not have a Wealth Star in the BaZi chart, he or she can still
develop skills in handling and making money although the capacity would be
limited. A person with a vibrant Wealth Star will have good business acumen and
entrepreneurial skills.

If youre wondering if its beneficial to have as many Wealth Stars as possible in

a chart, then the answer is a NO. A person with a few or many Wealth Stars will
not necessarily have a better wealth capacity or get wealthy. In fact, when ones
Day Master is not strong enough to handle many Wealth Stars, one may even be
poor and destitute. A couple of likely scenarios are that this person finds himself
or herself being surrounded by money that isnt his or her own (eg. working in a
bank) or that he or she is unable to capture and materialise the money-making
opportunities in his or her life. In these cases, the Wealth Stars have become
negative elements and cause problems associated with money.

Wealth Star

In terms of people matters, the Wealth Star also represents the wife (or girlfriend) for a male. This is
because the element that the Day Master controls is an asset with value. For both genders, the Wealth
Star also represents the father, as the father is ones traditional source of survival and livelihood while
being under the care of the parents. As such, the quality of the Wealth Star also governs the quality of
the father and the spouse/girlfriend of a man.

Wealth Star

A good quality Wealth Star indicates that the personal characteristics of the spouse/
girlfriend or father are also positive. Such positive qualities can include aspects like
good education level, kindness and high intellect. Remember that the quality of a
particular person or subject matter is not the same as ones affinity and relationship
(eg. father or wife) with it. Such affinity or relationship is evaluated based on the
Palaces of Influence. Recall that ones affinity with the spouse is evaluated by
examining the Spouse Palace whereas with the father, the Parents Palace.

The Wealth Star also represents ones actual assets eg. properties, cars and other
objects. A good quality Wealth Star means that your assets and owned objects
have high-value! A poor quality Wealth Star means that the assets and things that
you own have little actual or investment value. The Wealth Star can represent other
things that you own eg. land, jewelry and even intangible items of value such as
intellectual property and creative ideas.

Activities Represented by the Wealth Star

The Wealth Star governs business activities and entrepreneurial ideas. Activities
like investments, the sale and purchase of properties, commercial activities and
basically any activity that generates money is governed by the Wealth Star. This also
includes money management activities like accounting and financial planning.

How the Wealth Star Affects Behaviour

In addition to the dimensions as discussed above, the Wealth Star also governs
behavioural characteristics such as calculation, risk taking and risk management.
The presence of the Wealth Star also gives the BaZi owner a sense of
responsibility, accountability and ownership of his/her actions. It can also make
one straightforward.

The Wealth Star of course provides one with entrepreneurial insight and business
acumen. When the Wealth Star is negative, the person will have a negative view
of money and of others who are money-minded whereas when the Wealth Star
is positive, one will naturally exhibit entrepreneurial behaviour and enjoy work
involving wealth generation.

For this Yi Wood Day Master, the presence of the wealth is in the Ji Earth which is the main hidden
Qi residing in the Goat. Hence, the Ji Earth is the Wealth Star of this Yi Wood Day Master. Please
remember that you need to check the entire chart for the Five Factors, including all the hidden stems.
So check for the Wealth Star, not only in the Heavenly Stems, but also in all the hidden stems of the
Earthly Branches. Note that in the event the Wealth Star is completely missing from a chart, it does
not mean the person will be poor. It does, however, indicate a lack of affinity with wealth management
and generation activities and skills.

Wealth Star

Is my Wealth Star better than yours?

As you proceed deeper into BaZi studies, you will realise that even the same Star can
have variations in meaning and effect depending on its element. For example, a Wood
Day Master where the wealth element is Earth. Now imagine, how comfortable and
easy it is for a plant to be simply sitting on the soil (a Wealth Star that is of the Earth
element represent properties and land). As such, for Wood Day Masters, it is easier for
wealth to be generated and without requiring as much effort as say, a Geng Metal Day
Master. The Wealth Star of a Geng Metal person is Wood. Imagine how much effort,
energy and likely hands-on work is required to chop wood!

In short, even the ability, speed and style of wealth generation is different for Day Master
of different elements.

Lets further discuss this concept with the example below:

This chart belongs to Bill Gates, the richest person in the world. He is a Ren Day Master
with Bing Fire (Month Stem) as one of his Wealth Stars. Notice also that this Bing Fire
is rooted in his Year, Month AND Day Branches, which make the Fire element extremely
robust in his chart. Remember that Bing Fire is represented by the sun? Now, the sun
is infinite and unlimited. As such, Bill Gates potential for wealth is similarly unlimited
as well! Of course, the quality of Fire in his chart is also very good. Bear in mind that
even if ones Wealth Star is Bing Fire, one can still be poor if the quality of Bing Fire is
not good.

4
Wealth Star

For a Wealth Star to be favourable, the self or the Day Master, must at least be
reasonably strong. As such, we prefer if the Day Master is born in the strong or
prosperous season. If there are other supporting elements in the BaZi chart, then
the self can also be strong enough to take control of the Wealth Star(s).

If ones personal element is very weak, then his/her ability to control the wealth
element will be poor. As such, it is more difficult for this person to become wealthy.
In short, when the Wealth Star is deemed as favourable, then the BaZi owner can
likely become wealthy especially when he/she meets the Wealth element in the
Luck or Annual Pillars. During those times, he/she can achieve good results from
wealth generation activities. On the other hand, if the Wealth Star is unfavourable,
the appearance of the Wealth Star in the Luck or Annual Pillars will cause money
problems, financial difficulties or even loss of wealth.

An important thing to keep in mind is that although the static chart largely
determines if the Wealth Star is favourable or not, bear in mind that the actual Luck
Pillars as they are encountered can change the level (degree of severity) of how the
Wealth Star affects a person, whether good or bad.

INFLUENCE STAR

Introduction

The Influence Star in a BaZi Chart governs ones power, authority and status in
life and it is the Star that enables one to be influential and famous. In addition, the
Influence Star also denotes ones charisma, with the ability to convince others by
the virtue of their appearance and the way they communicate. The quality of the
Influence Star also enables one to command respect and authority.

If you are a Jia or Yi Day Master person, then either Geng or Xin Metal

Influence Star

What do Influence Stars influence?

The Influence Star generally governs power, status, charisma, leadership, bravery,
responsibility, ambition and also perseverance. For females, the Influence Star also
represents the husband or boyfriend. In a BaZi Chart of a female, it is important to
examine if the Influence Star is present as well as its quality. For a male, the Influence
Star represents his children. As such, when a man has good quality Influence Stars,
then the quality and characteristics of his children are favourable too.

The Influence Star also represents objects that serve to protect you. As such, the
house that you live in (especially when growing up as a child) and the place that you
work in are also represented by Influence Stars. This is because these places have
rules (written or otherwise) that you need to abide by. Therefore, the educational
institution that one attends is also represented by the Influence Star.

The Influence Star also represents the law. It is also ones moral principles and
virtues. The Influence Star represents leadership and management. An important
aspect of the Influence Star is that it enables one to discern between right and
wrong. As such, people with good Influence Stars are generally those who abide by
the law. In addition, they are usually charismatic, righteous and carry themselves
with dignity.

People with good Influence Stars make good leaders who are able to abide by
and follow a set of rules, such as team leaders. Examples of other leaders are
head prefects and scout leaders. In addition, people with positive Influence Stars
typically have a firm but caring attitude towards those they govern.

The Influence Star also governs ones ability to learn a subject or skill. This is because
discipline is involved in any learning environment. While a teacher is responsible for
conveying each aspect of learning, it is up to the student to be disciplined enough
to do adequate revision and work towards understanding what has been taught.
A good Influence Star will foster a conducive learning environment for a particular
subject or skill. A negative Influence Star, when present in the BaZi Natal Chart or a
Luck Pillar can cause a child to not want to study or an adult to be lazy in learning
a new subject or skill.

The Influence Star: Is it Good or Bad?

While the Influence Star is the element that controls ones Day Master, such control
is not to be viewed negatively as it serves to take care and protect the individual. A
positive Influence Star results in behaviour that is strict and by-the-rules but serves
to produce a good end product.

FIRE

WOOD
EARTH

CONTROLLING

WATER METAL

The Influence Star represents ones own discipline. This means that one is able
to set rules for himself or herself to achieve a particular goal, target or objective.
For example, when one goes on a diet, a good deal of discipline and willpower is
necessary to attain results. A weak Influence Star will cause the person on diet to
give up midway through the program! As such, a positive Influence Star is extremely
important to enable one to stick and follow through a plan such as a diet or gym
routine.

4
Influence Star

A negative Influence Star may also lead one to become unfocused and not realise
what his or her important priorities in life are. The Influence Star also governs ones
ability to manage and bring out the best in other people. In line with this, it is often
necessary to impose rules and regulations. While a controlling attitude arising from
the Influence Star can often be viewed as negative, the motive behind such an
attitude is positive.

The key determinant in deciding whether an Influence Star is positive or negative

is to, once again, look at whether the element that represents the Influence Star is
favourable. The gauge of this is the strength of the Day Master. If ones Day Master
is weak, most of the time the influence element is negative. A negative Influence
Star may result in one disliking being bossed around and made to abide by rules
and principles. The person in question will prefer to do things at his or her own
discretion and schedule.

For a female, a negative Influence Star will also cause problems with her husband
or boyfriend. For a male, such a negative Influence Star will result in problems with
the children.

If the Influence Star is favourable, then one is charismatic and recognised for ones
principles, morals and virtues. In addition, the person with a favourable Influence
Star will be disciplined, responsible, have priorities in life and oriented towards
achieving goals and set objectives.

In the example above, note that the Ren Day Master does NOT have a root to the
Influence Star in the Year Pillar. This is because there is no Earth element present in
the Hidden Stems of the Earthly Branches. As such, while this person may appear
to have goals and objectives, in actuality he/she does not have the drive, desire and
discipline to follow through with the right actions.

Influence Star

Basically, if the Influence Star is favourable, then one will exhibit all the positive characteristics
associated with it. The opposite is true if the Influence Star is negative. In addition, each Influence Star
is different depending on the element associated with it. For example a Metal element Influence Star is
different from an Earth one. A Metal Influence Star belongs to a Wood Day Master:

This Metal Influence Star will manifest as higher authority and stronger discipline since the Metal
element is associated with justice, power and decision making.

An Earth Influence Star belongs to the a person with a Water Day Master. As Earth is slow moving, this
Influence Star may denote a person who takes time to make decisions and take action. In addition, the
person will likely be more conservative and careful in deciding to take action.

RESOURCE STAR

Introduction
In this section, we will be examining the Resource Star, one of the Five Factors in
the study of BaZi. As with the other factors, at this stage, the polarity (Yin or Yang)
of the Resource Star will not be considered.

If you are a Jia or Yi Day Master person, then either Ren or Gui Water
will be the Resource Star. If you are a Wu or Ji Day Master person, then either
Bing or Ding Fire will be the Resource Star. For a Geng or Xin person,
Wu or Ji Earth represents the Resource Star. Lastly, for a Ren or Gui Water
person, Geng or Xin Metal is the Resource Star.

For the Bing or Ding Day Masters, both the Rabbit and Tiger Branches also
contain the Resource Stars. Remember there is Jia Wood as the main Hidden

Therefore, the Resource Star, just like the other Five Factors, can be found either in
the Heavenly Stems or Hidden Stems of the Earthly Branches.

Resource Star

What does the Resource Star represent?

The Resource Star governs ones feelings and emotions. It is an extremely important
indicator because how a person feels determines ones ability to function on a
day-to-day basis. The Resource Star also governs ones health and well-being. A
strong and positive Resource Star means a person with a healthy outlook in life. If
the Resource Star is weak or negative, then one is prone to feel ill, lethargic and
broody.

The Resource Star is extremely important since it governs ones internal world
thinking, aspirations and feelings. For example, one can be married to the best
spouse in the world, but yet can still feel sad, lonely or miserable because the mind
talks the person into feeling in that way! A positive Resource Star will keep you
feeling positive despite all the negativities and challenges that the world hurls at
you.

Hence, the power of the Resource Star is that it is able to dissolve all the negative
aspects that attempt to hurt the Day Master. As such, the Resource Star also
represents noble and helpful people in ones life. People with good quality Resource
Stars in the BaZi chart will meet people throughout life who are able to provide
the necessary guidance and support for them to achieve their goals. Those with
negative Resource Star, on the other hand, will not be able to meet the right people
and even when they do, will still feel disadvantaged.

For both genders, the Resource Star also represents the mother. This is because
the mothers role is to take care of the child. So, if ones Resource Star is clashed,
punished, harmed or destroyed, then one will have problems and issues with the
mother. Vice-versa, if the Resource Star is positive and unaffected by any of the
Earthly Branch relationships, then the relationship this individual has with the mother
is good.

4
Resource Star

In terms of objects, the Resource Star represents documents such as passports,

driving licenses and information such as data saved in the computer. All
documentation that is about you and which are important and valuable to you are
Resource Stars. In addition, the Resource Star can also represent items that you
adorn on yourself (since they are comforting and make you feel good) and medication
that you apply or ingest. The vitamins that you take or simply the food that you eat
are representations of Resource Stars. It is important to make a distinction between
the food that you eat and the experience of dining.

The Resource Star also represents knowledge. A knowledgeable person is a

resourceful person. The Resource Star is what you learn, read and the research that
you do. In this case, you will need to assess the quality of the Output Star. Whether
these knowledge and experience gained will become useful and can generate
wealth or to improve oneself, will depend on the Output Star.

When one has too many Resource Stars, that person will have the tendency to
be lazy. This is because comfort becomes too important to this person. He or she
wants to feel good all the time and will not want to take hardship, produce work or
want to expend effort. Therefore, a single good quality Resource Star is enough.
Too many Resource Stars make the person think too much as well. The Resource
Star is ones knowledge, ideas, thoughts and input. Too much of it will cause one to
talk to oneself too much, causing confusion and emotional problems. Someone in
this condition will be very sensitive and feeling-oriented. In addition, he or she may
be overly suspicious thanks to the over-sensitivity of people and situations around
them.

Behaviours Tied to the Resource Star

The Resource Star governs the act of studying and learning. If the Resource Star
is favourable to you, you should continue to study throughout your life. Take up a
course or learn a new skill every year. If the Resource Star is unfavourable in your
Chart, perhaps you should consider applying any information learnt in a practical
way. If not, the information that you have accumulated will be wasted. Negative
abundant resource can cause one to like to learn knowledge and accumulate
information that is useless.

A good quality Resource Star gives one the quality of being nice, peaceful and
loving. It makes us amicable, forgiving and gentle. The Resource Stars likes to take
it easy and individual denoted usually tend to be mellow and easy-going. In addition,
Resource Stars also indicate one who is thoughtful, imaginative and dreamy.

One important aspect that the Resource Star governs is health and well-being.
A good quality Resource Star means one will enjoy good health and longevity. A
severely negative Resource Star will cause one to have ill health and even taking
medication will usually bring negative side effects.

The Resource Star as the 5 Elements

If you belong to the Fire Day Master, your Resource Star would be Wood. As Fire
burns Wood rapidly, Fire Day Masters require constant learning as his/her resources
are used up very quickly. As such, Fire people need to learn various different subjects
and need constant new information to keep lively.

Compare this to an Earth Day Master. As Fire hardens Earth, this leads to the
creation of an unfavourable Resource Star that causes him/her to stagnate and
become confused. In this circumstance, one needs to use the Output Star and to
utilise and apply the information and knowledge learnt in developing ones skills.
This is to make sure that the energy is released and to keep the Earth individual
from stagnating.

Resource Star

Lets examine what happens when ones Resource Star is of the Metal element.
This is usually the case for a person with Water Day Master. This arrangement is
tricky as the combination of Metal and Water causes one to feel too sentimental and
emotional. Since ones feelings and the mind are governed by the Resource Star,
this individual can be too sentimental, gets worked up easily, may easily burst into
tears or become depressed. In short, people of Water Day Master must always keep
tap of their emotions.

Metal individuals on the other hand, will regard the Earth element as their Resource
Stars. Too much thinking, ideas and need for comfort can make the Metal person
perform too slowly. This individual can be prone to procrastination as a result of
a negative Resource Star. This is because abundant Earth will cover the Metal.
A Metal person hidden in Earth cannot perform due to too much knowledge and
ideas.

Resource Star

For Wood individuals, even a small quantity Water element will lead them to develop
many ideas. This is because a plant only needs adequate amounts of water to
develop many branches and offshoots. However, too much water will cause the
plant to be uprooted, float and perhaps even rot! As such, a Wood person with too
much of Water element will cause a person to become confused and ungrounded.
This person is likely dreamy, unrealistic and wanders about in life.

In addition to the different qualities of the different types of Resource Stars based on
the 5 elements, it is also important to determine if the Resource Star is favourable or
not in any BaZi chart. If a Day Master is weak, then the Resource Star is favourable
and if the Day Master is strong, the Resource Star is unfavourable.

OUTPUT STAR

Introduction
The Output Star is one of the Five Factors in the study of BaZi and governs our
creativity and ability to speak, communicate and perform. It represents our
capabilities and skills. The quality of ones Output Star is a key indicator of how well
one performs in day-to-day life. For example, for an artist, the Output Star represents
creative expression whereas for a businessman, the Output Star represents the
business product. For an employee, the Output Star represents his/her skills.

Identifying the Output Star

The Output Star is essentially represented by the element that the Day Master
produces. At this point, there is no need to consider the polarity (ie. Yin or
Yang ) of the Output Star as yet.

When it comes to the Output Star, the location of the Star in the Heavenly Stems is
quite important since this denotes that others are able to see the individuals talents
and skills. If ones Output Star is only in the Hidden Stems, the persons talents and
skills will not be obvious and it will take getting to know the person before such
talents and skills are unveiled.

If ones Output Star is revealed in the Heavenly Stems and is rooted in the Earthly

Output Star

What the Output Star Represents

In a nutshell, the Output Star represents ones talents and skills. It is also ones
performance ability and showmanship. The Output Star governs ones ability in
speech and communication with others. In addition, the Output Star also indicates
ones style, for example, dressing and speech patterns. As such, whether one
comes across as beautiful (in appearance), dresses well or even brand-conscious is
dependent on the Output Star.

An important aspect of the Output Star is that it governs whether one is able
to effectively apply ones knowledge. The quality of the Output Star is the key
determinant in ones ability to turn knowledge and experience gained into usable
skills. For example, one may be able to attend the finest universities in the world,
but whether the person is able to generate wealth from such acquired knowledge is
dependent on how one uses ones skills and in essence, how the person performs
in life.

As such, the Output Star is actually considered the secondary Wealth Star in the
study of BaZi. If a person is missing the actual Wealth Star in the BaZi chart, then he/
she is still able to generate income and wealth provided the Output Star is present.
This is because in the productive cycle of the 5 elements, the Output Star produces
Wealth. This translates to one being able to generate money and income utilising
ones skills and talents.

As the Output Star basically represents ones ability to produce, it also represents
children, for a female. As such, a female with good Output Stars will have useful
children with good characteristics.

Since the Output Star represents ones performance abilities, it is crucial for
entertainers and performers to have the Output Star revealed in the Heavenly Stems
of the BaZi chart. This is because entertainers and people in showbiz require their
performance to be seen and admired.

more likely be working creatively behind-the-scenes such as a song or scriptwriter.

Output Star

A good quality Output Star also bestows a person with the ability to persuade,
convince and lead others by virtue of their speech and style of communication which
can also include writing or actions. As such, the Output Star provides one with the
skill to put together and communicate ideas, thoughts and feelings effectively.

In terms of physical objects, the Output Star represents items which are created or
invented. An example can be some form of writing such as a poem, story or book.
It can also be a work of art of any sort. For a programmer, the software that he/she
has created represents the output. For a teacher, the Output Star also represents
ones student ie. the person that teacher has taught and molded. The student is
considered a product of sorts.

The Output Star can also represent any endeavour that requires time and the
expending of ones energy, such as amassing a collection. So, if you collect stamps,
then the stamp collection represents your Output Star. If you collect cars, then
your car collection can also represents your Output Star (while at the same time,
connoting value as well through representation of the Wealth Star).

Activities Governed by the Output Star

The Output Star represents performance such as singing, dancing and sports
activities. It represents artistic and creative talents. The Output Star includes
essentially any activity that you need to expend energy such as speaking or
performing on stage.

In fact, even the act of scolding or reprimanding someone uses the Output Star.
As such, a good quality Output Star enables one to win arguments as the person
will have a good ability to put his/her points across. A poor quality Output Star
results in a person having poor persuasion skills as well as lack of facts and points.
The Output Star also represents the need and ability to challenge others. It is also
the desire to win arguments and triumph over the competition, and represents the
alertness and sharpness in ones thinking.

Since the Output Star is basically the performance star, its presence indicates the
showiness of the person in question. The degree of showiness of the individual is
dependent of course dependent on the location of the Output Star in the BaZi chart.
If the Output Star is only in the Hidden Stems, then the person is low profile. But if
the Output Star is in the Heavenly Stems, then the person can often be perceived
as arrogant or a show-off.

Output Star

The Output Star Represented by Different Elements

The Output Star will manifest variations in characteristics depending on which of

the 5 elements it is. For example, for Wood Day Masters, their Output Star is Fire:

Jia Yi Bing Ding

Wood Fire

Since Wood producing Fire is like an instant combustion, Wood Day Masters are
quick, alert and are able to come up with their points fast.

On the other hand, for Earth Day Masters, their output element is Metal:

Wu Ji Geng Xin

Earth Metal

As the process of producing Metal from the Earth is indeed a slow one, Earth Day
Masters will need time to think about ideas and to put together their thoughts into
a presentation or some other mode of communication. So, if you are a salesperson,
always give Earth Day Masters some time to think about their buying decisions.

Ren Gui Jia Yi

Water Wood

Water people tend to be fickle with their output, for instance, what they say and
communicate. They tend to change their minds often and as such, what they say,
create and produce can be in a constant state of flux. As such, it is advisable to get
written confirmation when it comes to dealing with Water Day Masters.

Output Star

Interpreting the Output Star

For females, a clash to the Output Star can mean miscarriage. If the female in
question has already borne children, then perhaps there are problems with the
children or the children are leaving home to study. A clash to the Output Star can
also denote loss of ability to persuade and convince others, as well as a sudden
inability to perform. You need to examine and study how the other Earthly Branch
relationships affect the Output Star.

In order for one to enjoy a good Output Star, the strength of the Day Master must be
strong or at least, moderately strong. This is crucial because one needs to be able
to produce without weakening the self too much. When ones self is strong, then the
Output Star is favoured. However, when ones self is overly weak, then the Output
Star becomes negative because such a weak self is unable to support the growth
of another element.

People with favourable Output Stars are usually skillful, talented, intelligent and
typically prefer to have their own businesses or generate their own sources of
income. They have good ideas and are usually paid well for their skills and talents
since they can competently translate their talents and abilities into useful skills.
These people use their skills and creative ideas in order to generate wealth.

People with unfavourable Output Stars on the other hand, are conservative,
lack creativity and likely to simply follow ideas and suggestions of other people.
In addition, they tend to work for other people and make their money under the
guidance of superiors and within the confines of a companys goals and targets.
These people lend their strength and energy in aiding others ideas and creative
thoughts. This is because a person without a good Output Star will find it difficult to
contribute good and meaningful ideas.

Since the Output Star represents creative thinking, people with strong Output
Stars tend to be different and stand out from others. Such people are willing to try
new things and implement creative plans, resisting the urge to conform to societal
norms.

For this Gui Water Day Master, the Output Star, which is Jia Wood in the
Month Pillar, is in a Combination relationship with the Ji Earth in the Year Pillar. As
the person is born in the Summer season, we find that the combination successfully
transforms and produces Earth. As such, the Output Star disappears. This can
manifest in this person always having good ideas but which are stolen by others, or
seemingly good ideas always backfire.

A Gui Water individual born in Summer does not favour the Earth element which
is the Influence element. A negative Influence Star denotes problems, hassles and
loss of leadership, authority and respect. We can also conclude that it is difficult for
this person to run a business of his own (since a successful business is based on
good ideas and creativity) and is better off working for others. It is better for him
to follow set principles and guidelines established by others (such as company
policies, targets etc). In addition, he can also work with partners and in teams as
this Gui Water individual is weak and favours the Water element.

The Five Factors provide extremely important details in a BaZi reading. It is by

combining the understanding of the Five Factors with the various Earthly Branch
(or Heavenly Stem) relationships that we can decipher the intricacies of any BaZi
chart.

COMPANION STAR

Introduction

The last factor is the Companion Star which governs ones affinity with siblings,
colleagues, friends and also oneselfthe last of which is how one feels about
himself or herself (for example, ones self-esteem, self-identity and confidence).
In addition to friends, siblings and peers, the Companion Star can also represent
competitors and those within the same industry.

In terms of activity and behaviour, the Companion Star represents activities that a
person enjoys doing, such as holidaying, partaking in adventures and socialising.
Attending a party or social gathering for example, is using the Companion Star.
Bear in mind that the concept of the Companion Star is different from the Resource
Star. The Resource Star governs activities to do with relaxation, rejuvenation and
recuperating.

The Companion Star typically governs activities that one does with others such as
playing team sports (eg. basketball, futsal). In business, one can use the Companion
Star by being in a partnership or joint venture. At work, one can use the Companion
Star by working in teamsthe Companion Star represents your colleagues, peers
and department mates.

Identifying the Companion Star is simple because it is the same element as ones
Day Master. For example, for Jia or Yi Wood Day Master, all other Wood elements in
the BaZi Chart are considered Companion Stars.

Companion Star

How Companion Stars Behave

The Companion Star essentially governs ones self esteem so when ones Companion
Star is weak then the confidence level is also poor. People who have high self-
esteem, who are determined and have a healthy regard for themselves usually have
positive and favourable Companion Stars. When one likes to be in the company of
other people, this is an indication for a need of the Companion Star, such as the
case when one has a favourable Companion Star in the BaZi chart. A person who
prefers to be alone and have private time for himself or herself typically does not
favour the Companion Star.

A negative or unfavourable Companion Star can cause one to compare with others
and thus, invoke jealousy. The Companion Star will also cause one to be competitive
and always desire to be better than others.

We can easily evaluate if the Companion Star is positive or negative by determining

the strength of the Day Master. A weak Day Master favours the Companion Star as
one needs the same element to strengthen the Day Master. As such, a weak Day
Master prefers to be sociable, likes to be with others and has more confidence
being in a group setting. Such a person also enjoys talking and spending time with
friends and generally prefers to be the company of others.

On the other hand, a strong Day Master does not favour the Companion Star. A
person with an unfavourable Companion Star will feel that the world revolves around
him or her and does not feel that he or she needs the help of friends or teamwork.

This Jia Wood Day Master is born in the Rabbit month where the Wood element is
strongest. In addition, this person in also born in the Jia Yin year, hence having
strong, additional Wood elements in the chart. As such, this person has a lot of
friends or acquaintances who are not beneficial to him. The person likely doesnt
like to be with his friends as they cause problems. In addition, he is probably always
jealous of his or her friends and people that he or she knows and constantly desires
to be better than them.

Companion Star

In addition, recall that there are 5 essential relationships between the Earthly
Branches that we need to analyse in relation to the Five Factors, including the
Companion Star:
Combination
Clash
Harm
Punishment
Destruction

A key aspect of the Companion Star is that its presence competes with the Day
Master to control the Wealth Star. As such, people who have strong Companion
Stars usually have problems accumulating and saving wealth. Take a look at the
example below:

This is a Jia Wood Day Master born in the Tiger month, with Jia Wood protruding
on the Month Pillar. In addition, this person is also born in the Rabbit hour. The Day
Branch is also the Dragon. Notice that for almost the entire chart, the only Wealth
Star present is represented by the Wu Earth hidden in the Dragon Branch. As such,
all the Wood elements present are keen to be planted onto the single Earth element
in the chart. This is a chart that indicates strong and greedy competition.

During this Luck Pillar, the sudden appearance of Ji Earth which is the Wealth Star causes
all friends, siblings and rivals to clamour and fight for the money. A real-life example can
be a sudden inheritance that brings out the worst in this persons siblings and relatives.
As such, we do not like to see too many Companion Stars in ones chart.

It is never advisable to count the number of the elements that we are studying
and instead, we should assess the quality of the element in question within a BaZi
chart.

This is a Jia Wood Day Master born in the Rabbit month. Note that Yi Wood also
penetrates through to the Month Pillar. As this Day Master is already born in the
prosperous season, it is unfavourable to see any additional Wood elements. As
such, the Companion Star is unfavourable for this Day Master and can manifest as
jealousy and loss of money due to friends. This Jia Wood Day Master should avoid
partnership but can either work alone or for others.

This Jia Wood Day Master is able to work for others as employment denotes the
presence of the Influence Star. Remember that the Influence Star represents the
boss and people who have authority over the Day Master. In addition, recall that the
Influence Star is the element that controls the Day Master and as such, can help
control the Companion Star as well. Since this Day Master favours the Influence
Star, the person will exhibit the positive characteristics of the Influence Star and
negative characteristics of the Companion Star.

This is a male Ren Water Day Master born in the Horse month which is in the
Summer season and is seated on top of the Rat. The Rat contains his Companion
Star whereas the Horse contains his Wealth Star. This Day Masters Wealth Star
represents his wife (and is contained in the Horse). As such, the Companion Star
hidden in the Rat is actually his competitor. In addition, there is a Clash relationship
between the Horse and the Rat.

The Clash relationship to the Spouse Palace affects ones marriage. We know that
the Clash involves the Wealth Star (ie. wife) and Companion Star (ie. competitor).
Now, all we need to do is to combine the analysis and deduce that since the Clash
relationship involves both the Companion and Wealth Stars and affects the Spouse
Palace, there will be 3rd party problems for this Ren Water males marriage. Since
the Wealth Star represents actual wealth as well, we can further deduce that such
a 3rd party problem will also cause an actual loss of wealth due to separation or
divorce.

seated on top of the Monkey. The Pig contains a hidden Jia which is the Companion
Star. The Monkey harms the Pig (a Harm relationship denotes being betrayed,
backstabbed and possible loss of friendship causing emotional pain). In addition,
the Resource Star, which is the Ren Water in the Pig, also represents ones feelings
of comfort and happiness. By putting the pieces together, we can already predict
that an event will occur involving a betrayal, loss of friendship and as a result the
person will feel unhappy and hurt.

While the potential exists for this person to encounter the problems that we
concluded above, we also have to take into account the effects of the other Pillars
in the chart. In addition, we can predict that this event is likely to take place around
35 years of age since it straddles the middle portion of the BaZi chart between the
Month and Day pillars. We need also to consider the Annual and Luck Pillars and
how they affect the original Harm relationship.

In summary, when we analyse a BaZi chart at this stage, we examine the Five Factors
in tandem with the various Earthly Branch and Heavenly Stem relationships that
exist. Check what Stars are involved, how these Stars are affected by the different
Earthly Branch relationships and which Palaces are affected in order to derive your
reading.
