Name and Grade Level: Japan Unit: Grade 3, Lesson 2

Title: Government

Content Knowledge - Objective: How do the people of Japan


govern themselves?

After reading and annotating an article from a website about the


government in Japan, students will answer questions and participate in
a class discussion about Japans government.

Pedagogy:

Independent: Students will independently read and annotate an online


article and answer questions.

Class Discussion: Students will participate in a class discussion,


reviewing and discussing the article and what they learned about the
government in Japan.

Notes:
Students will be informally assess through the class discussion. The
formative assessment will be students work samples.

Technology for Learners Being Used


Students will be using iPads or computers to read an article about the
government in Japan.
Technology for Teachers Being Used
Teachers will use the computer to find an article for students to read.
The teacher can use Newsela, an online source, to find leveled articles
based on the students reading levels.

Critical Thinking: Students will be critically thinking while reading,


answering questions, and discussing Japans government.

Creating:

Communication: Students will be communicating during the class


discussion about Japans government.

Collaboration: Students will be collaborating during the class


discussion, where they can feed off each others ideas and comments.

Remember/ Understand- Students will learn new information about


Japans government.

Analyze- Students will draw connections among ideas during the class
discussion, as they build upon others ideas.

read and demonstrate an understanding of the government in Japan.

Essential Vocabulary: Japan, government, Constitutional monarchy,


emperor,

Materials: iPads, computers, article on government in Japan

Introduction/Engagement:

The word emperor will be written on the board. Students will take a
few minutes to jot down what they think an emperor is, then there will
be a class discussion.
Lesson: (developmental procedures)

Students will independently read an article about the government


in Japan. After reading the article independently, students will
answer questions.
The class will reread the article together, and go over the
answers and have a class discussion on the government in Japan.

Modification:
The articles will be scaffolded based on my students reading
levels/ability.

Enrichment:

Students will research and make a venn diagram, comparing and


contrasting the United States government with Japans government.
