MBE ELECTRONIC CONTROLS APPLICATION AND INSTALLATION

5.12 THROTTLE CONTROL/GOVERNORS

There are two types of engine governors that are used with throttle controls. The engine
governors are:
The Automotive Limiting Speed Governor (ALSG) for torque control, typical governor for
on-highway applications(refer to section 5.12.1)
The Power Take-off (PTO) for speed control, typical variable speed governor (VSG) for
off-highway applications (refer to section 5.12.2)

5.12.1 AUTOMOTIVE LIMITING SPEED GOVERNOR - ON-HIGHWAY

In on-highway applications and some nonroad applications, ALSG is the primary throttle source.
The throttle input in a ALSG sets percent load. The amount of fuel input to the engine is
determined by the throttle position. As the load on the engine varies the resulting engine speed
will vary between idle speed and rated speed.

ALSG Accelerator Pedal

The accelerator pedal (AP) sends an input signal which the ALSG uses to calculate engine power
proportional to the foot pedal position. This assembly is also referred to as the Accelerator
Pedal Sensor (AP Sensor) assembly.

ALSG Accelerator Pedal Installation

MBE Electronic Controls are compatible with an AP which has an output voltage that meets SAE
J1843 and has less than 5% of voltage supply closed throttle variability.
The AP is an OEM supplied part. Vendor sources that may be contacted for additional design
and installation details.

NOTE:
An Idle Validation Switch is required.

An Idle Validation Switch is required and uses two digital inputs. Refer to section 4.2, "Digital
Inputs," for additional information.

ALSG Electronic Foot Pedal Assembly Diagnostics

An Idle Validation Switch inputs provide redundancy to assure that the engine will be at idle in
the event of an AP in-range malfunction. The Idle Validation Switch is connected to two digital
inputs on the VCU. When the Idle Validation Switch on the AP is switched to battery ground, the
engine speed will be at idle.

5.12.2 POWER TAKE-OFF

PTO control is available to fuel the engine in order to keep the selected PTO speed regardless of
engine torque without driver interaction. The engine torque cannot exceed a programmed limit.
Upon startup the engine will go to the speed selected by the PTO throttle position.
The PTO throttle control options are:
Cab PTO Cruise Switch PTO
Remote PTO
Analog PTO

Cab PTO Cruise Switch PTO

The Cruise Control switches are used to activate and control the Cruise Switch PTO (Cab PTO)
option.

NOTE:
Cab throttle and remote throttle can be overridden with the accelerator pedal unless
PTO Throttle Override is disabled.

The Cruise On/Off switch must be turned ON and the park brake must be engaged (software Rel
11.02 or later) to enable this feature if parameter 1:11:30 as listed in Table 5-50 is set to 1. If
Cruise Switch PTO is inactive and the Cruise Switch PTO conditions are met, pressing and
releasing the Resume/Accel Switch will activate Cruise Switch PTO at the Resume PTO Speed.
Pressing and releasing the Set/Coast Switch will activate Cruise Switch PTO at the Set PTO Speed.
The Resume PTO Speed and the Set PTO Speed can be programmed with the VEPS or minidiag2
and cannot be greater than the PTO maximum speed or lower than the PTO minimum speed.
Once the PTO set speed is established, the Resume/Accel Switch can be used to increment the set
speed at a rate of 200 rpm/sec (programmable). Releasing the Resume/Accel Switch will set the
engine speed at the current operating speed.
The Set/Coast Switch will decrement the set speed at a rate of 200 rpm/sec (programmable),
down to the minimum PTO speed. Releasing the Set/Coast Switch will set the engine speed at
the current operating speed.
Remote PTO speed is disabled for any of the following:
Turning the Cruise Master Switch off
Vehicle speed is greater than Max Vehicle Speed in PTO (programmable default 9.6 km/h)
VSS fault
Clutch Released Pedal or Service Brake Pedal are pressed - optional
Park Brake is off (if configured)
If PTO Throttle Override is enabled, the throttle pedal can override the PTO engine speed up to the
maximum engine speed for Throttle Override. Throttle pedal or remote throttle engine speed can
override once the current PTO engine speed is reached. The previous PTO set speed will become
active again, if it is greater than the engine speed equivalent to the throttle pedal percentage.

Remote PTO Mode

The Remote PTO will override the Cab PTO mode when the Remote PTO Switch input on the
VCU (18/10) is grounded. Remote PTO will also override throttle pedal and remote throttle
unless PTO Throttle Override is disabled. The active throttle will override Remote PTO if
PTO Throttle Override is enabled.
The preset speed is selected by enabling the remote PTO switch once for PTO Speed #1, twice
for PTO Speed #2, and three times for PTO Speed #3. These preset speeds can be set with the
minidiag2.
Remote PTO speed is disabled for any of the following:
Turning the Remote PTO switch off for more than two seconds
Vehicle speed is greater than Max Vehicle Speed in PTO (programmable default 9.6 km/h)
VSS fault
Clutch Released Pedal or Service Brake Pedal are depressed
Park Brake is off (Software rel. 11.02 or later)

NOTE:
If the condition that disabled Remote PTO is inactive again, Remote PTO will
automatically start again. PTO #1 Set speed will be used.

If PTO Throttle Override is enabled, the throttle pedal can override the PTO Engine speed up
to the Maximum Engine Speed for Throttle Override. If the throttle pedal or remote throttle
engine speed is less than current PTO engine speed a dead band will occur. The previous PTO set
speed will become active again, if it is greater than the engine speed equivalent to the throttle
pedal percentage.
If remote PTO is active and then disabled due to one or more disabling condition, PTO mode will
automatically reactivate when the disabling condition is removed.

MBE ELECTRONIC CONTROLS APPLICATION AND INSTALLATION

Installation

The Remote PTO Switch is wired to pin 18/10 of the VCU/ADM2FR. See Figure 5-21.

Figure 5-21 Remote PTO Switch

Analog PTO

A Remote Accelerator Pedal can be installed to control either an analog Remote PTO (VSG) or
analog Remote Accelerator Pedal (ALSG).
The Remote PTO will start when the Remote PTO switch is switched to battery ground. The
Remote PTO logic will override the Cab PTO. Cab throttle and remote throttle are also overridden
unless PTO Throttle Override is disabled. When ALSG operation is required, the Remote
Accelerator Switch is switched to battery ground.
The Remote Accelerator Switch Select input (VCU, 18/7) determines the active throttle control.
When this pin is grounded, the engine will respond to the remote throttle input. When this input is
not grounded, the engine will respond to the cab throttle pedal.
The PTO Enable input (VCU, 18/10) determines if the engine will be in VSG or ALSG mode.
If remote PTO is active and then disabled due to one or more disabling condition, PTO mode will
automatically reactivate when the disabling condition is removed.
