My Learning Insights

Today, my learning insight will not only focus in the understanding of the sputum but
also with the activity weve had during our laboratory. There has been a reflection that I
underwent when I was currently focusing during our practical exams. I wasnt able to focus and I
was trying to grumble whether it was with the specimen that has a very light stain or was it my
way of focusing. I stumbled with the fact when I came to realize that I may not be really that
skilled with focusing in the microscope. So I identified the problem and thought of things of how
to solve it.

The aid of the invention of Anton Van Leewonheuk, the microscope, has been a big help
to the job of Medical Technologists. As an aspiring one, it is important that we master the skill of
microscopy because some of the things that we do in the laboratory, revolves around the use of
microscope. One of the features that the microscope has, is its ability to focus things that are not
seen by the naked eye. The microscope helps us observe urine components, stool contents and
many more fluids. Microorganisms that invade in the parts of our body and other fluids can also
be determined thru the use of this. Such as Acid-fast bacilli which uses a special stain to appear
red and can be seen clearly under the aid of the microscope. On the other hand, non-acid fast are
stained blue or purple. Microscopy in the level of students is very essential because it serves as
practice which shall be done in the real life situation. Therefore, a student should take these
preparations seriously because misuse and misinterpretation in the use of microscope shall lead
to wrong release of results which can be more alarming and will be more costly in both parties,
patient and medical technologist.

Microscopy is a tedious activity and it requires a heart to be skilful in it. I therefore

conclude that it is not a game to be played upon because as a Future Medical Technologist, many
lives depend on us and our service. When I came to identify my problem with focusing, I have
wished and thought if only I have a microscope at home. But I also came across a thought that
in every activity that we do in the laboratory, we should seize the moment of learning. We
should do things seriously and earnestly. As a student in the field of science, I should learn to
explore and should be of wisdom. It is stated that one way of learning is through discovery.
