MineSight Mapping
1. Purpose
1.1. This procedure describes how to import mapping points into MineSight and
digitize mapping data
1.2. This procedure includes how to change/update the mapping symbol database
2. Scope
2.1. This procedure applies to all Mine Geology Personnel. It will cover activities by
geologists or geotechnical team members that are in charge of digitizing mapped
sections. It does not include any information on pitwall mapping.
3. Responsibilities
3.1. MineSight Geologist/Geotech- Person responsible for digitizing paper maps from
the pit into MineSight, this is not an official job title and whoever is mapping is also
in charge of digitizing.
4. Hazards
4.1. Slips, trips, falls
4.2. Typical office hazards
5. Recourses
5.1. Data collected from pit mapping
5.2. Computer capable of running MineSight
5.3. MineSight dongle
6. Reference
6.1. None
7. Documents
7.1. Pit Mapping SOP (still in progress)
8. PPE
8.1. None
9. Procedure
9.1. Opening the Correct Folder and Layer
9.1.1. Start MineSight and select the appropriate folder from the drop down menu
9.1.2. Select appropriate license and start program

MineSight Mapping
9.3. Right click on the bench level folder (eg. 1425) and select import>3DPoints
File (ASCII)
MineSight Mapping
9.3.1. A pop up window will appear asking you to navigate to the survey file. Change
the file type from .xyz to all files. Note: the survey file must be saved as a .csv
with no headers.
MineSight Mapping
MineSight Mapping
Hint: in most cases you should import the points as indicated above,
without checking any of the boxes.
9.3.4. Your survey points should now be in the file tree to the left under the correct
bench folder.
9.4. When points are first imported, they will appear as a polyline. In order to
correct this, select the survey file from the file tree and un-check polyline
and check nodes on the right under the object properties window.

materials are correct, if they are, navigate to file>apply symbols to mapping file
(make sure the file you are applying is geol_symbols_2016) and select okay
MineSight Mapping
9.5.6. If symbols are not correct, see Ray or Ludwig to edit the symbols and
materials.
9.5.7. If symbols are correct, continue to 10.6
9.6. Make sure that your cursor is on point snap (hot key 1) and navigate to the
add grid button. Click one point and then the point adjacent to it.
MineSight Mapping
9.7. Select snap vertical to 2 points then select the two points you would like
to snap to. These should be your first and second mapping points.
MineSight Mapping
9.8. Once the grid is snapped to the necessary points and you have selected
the symbols you want in the geomap editor, it is time to start digitizing.
9.9. Select GeoTools>Geomap Tool
9.9.1. A pop up will appear asking which folder you would like to edit, select Pit
Mapping>Otjikoto>and a bench number (e.g. 1425)
MineSight Mapping
MineSight Mapping
9.9.4.1. You will know this works if yellow arrows appear next to your snapped grid
MineSight Mapping
9.9.5. Now navigate to the labels tab. In the box type: $az, $dip, $name, and your
name so it looks like the picture below.
MineSight Mapping
9.9.6. Check the boxes for Use last line/symbol name and material and Use
symbol
9.9.7. Now navigate to the symbols tab. You should see the pre-selected materials
and symbols on this tab. If you do not, return to step 9.5.
9.9.8. Select the box for insert label on second click
9.9.9. Change the drop-down menu on the bottom to dip direction/dip
MineSight Mapping
9.10. Using your mapping data, type the dip direction and dip into the boxes at
the bottom of the symbols tab and click on the symbol you wish to digitize.
MineSight Mapping
9.11. In your main window, find the point that corresponds with the dip and
dip direction you wish to digitize
9.12. Click once on the point, then a second time, then right click. An oriented
symbol with a label should show up on the point, like in the picture below.
MineSight Mapping
9.13. If you like the point, click the SAVE button, if not, click the DELETE
button then start again at 9.10.
9.13.1. There should now be an oriented symbol and label on the point you are
digitizing. If there is not, make sure that you have everything checked correctly
like the pictures above and try again from step 9.9.
9.14. If the edit grid is not close to the point you wish to digitize, you may need
to move it, this can be achieved by exiting the GeoMap Tool
9.14.1. Upon hitting the close button, there will be a pop up window asking if you wish
to save. In the box type mapping_yourname (e.g. mapping_madi) and select
