41xxsteelisafamilyofSAEsteelgrades,asspecifiedbytheSocietyofAutomotiveEngineers(SAE).Alloying
elementsincludechromiumandmolybdenum,andasaresultthesematerialsareofteninformallyreferredtoas
chromolysteel(commonvariantstylingsincludechromemoly,cromoly,CrMo,CRMO,CRMOLY,andsimilar).
Theyhaveanexcellentstrengthtoweightratioandareconsiderablystrongerandharderthanstandard1020steel,
butarenoteasilywelded(needpreandpostweldthermaltreatmenttoavoidcoldcracking).[1]

Whilethesegradesofsteeldocontainchromium,itisnotingreatenoughquantitiestoprovidethecorrosion
resistancefoundinstainlesssteel.

Examplesofapplicationsfor4130,4140and4145includestructuraltubing,bicycleframes,tubesfor
transportationofpressurizedgases,firearmparts,clutchandflywheelcomponents,androllcages.4150standsout
asbeingoneofthesteelsacceptedforuseinM16rifleandM4carbinebarrelsbytheUnitedStatesmilitary.These
steelsarealsousedinaircraftpartsandtherefore41xxgradestructuraltubingissometimesreferredtoas"aircraft
tubing".

Oneofthecharacteristicsofthisclassofsteelistheabilitytobecasehardenedbycarburizationofthesurface.The
coreofthematerialretainsitsbulkproperties,whiletheoutersurfaceissignificantlyhardenedtoreducewearand
tear.Thismakesthisgradeofsteelanexcellentmaterialforusessuchasgears,pistonpins,andcrankshafts.[2]
