Term Definition
Bearing Housing The center section of a Turbocharger.
Burr A protruding, ragged edge raised on the surface of metal.
Compressor Housing The intake side of the Turbocharger.
Dial Calipers An instrument for measuring thicknesses and internal or external diameters inaccessible
to a scale.
Impeller A rotating device used to force air in a desired direction.
Nozzle Ring The sliding portion of the Turbocharger that changes the size of the volute exit area.
Changing the exit area affects both boost pressure and exhaust backpressure.

Vane A blade on the Nozzle Ring.
Variable Geometry Turbocharger A style of turbocharger that adjusts its exit volute area, thereby increasing backpressure
quickly, in the exhaust system.
VGT Variable Geometry Turbocharger
VGT Actuator The electronic actuator that controls the position of the variable geometry turbocharger
nozzle ring. This actuator receives a signal from the ECM.
