Improving on a

Proven Process
2

The DCS Story

In 1994 Kevin Ehringer founded Optical Cabling Systems, LC. The vision to form Optical Cabling

Systems prior to fiber optical cable being a house-hold name brought exceptional growth to the

company the first 18 months in business. In 1996 OCS was named Americas16th fastest growing

company by INC. Magazine. While seeing this market segment erode due to offshore manufacturing

as well as the data center boom, Kevin formed Data Center Systems (DCS) in 2002.

Kevins goal was not to reinvent the wheel; it was to provide unique products within an existing methodology

to make it user-friendly Improving on a Proven Process. DCS designs, manufactures and installs the best

solution to meet the customers needs. We dont force the customer to use products within a solution that

are not suited for their environment.

Today, DCS laps the competition by delivering state-of-the-art products that provide unmatched

manageability, scalability and flexibility. DCS is a world leader in the design, manufacture and

installation of innovative fiber optic cabling solutions. Fiber Management System (FMS) is not

a collection of parts, it is the solution.

Who we are
Working smart. Working hard. Working with a vision. DCS is focused on a

singular objective: providing our customers with a total connectivity solution

for their Data Centers SAN and Mainframe environment.

Who is DCS?
Data Center Systems (DCS) is a world leader in the design, manufacture and installation of fiber optic connectivity

systems for the SAN and Mainframe environments. Our fiber optic physical layer solutions are more than a collection of

parts, they provide a structured Fiber Management System, (FMS).

Understanding the Processes

1990 IBM Fiber Transport System (FTS)

Centralized fiber optic cabling system was introduced in conjunction with the first fiber attached Mainframe

Central Patching Location (CPL) The CPL consists of cabinets or racks that hold the patch panels

Equipment ports are connected to the back of patch panels that are located in the Central Patching Location.

The fronts of the patch panels have individual ports that now represent the equipment ports.

Connections between two device ports can be done quickly and easily by running a short jumper cable to

connect the two patch panel ports.

This is a cool and innovative product that our customers will really appreciate. Taking the initia-
tive to design in connectivity solutions differentiates SUN from our competitors.

Bruce Wexler, Sun Storage Group Business Development Mgr.

Working with our Partners in the Industry

Working with the SUN Engineering team, (now Oracle) DCS developed a Modular Fiber Terminal that mounts inside the

rear of the SUN/StorageTek SL8500. This scalable solution allows the user to install up to (12) 6 channel LC Cassettes

with front MTP access as needed.

This solution allows the customer to maximize the benefits of a Central Area Patching facility to Zone Access Point

structured cabling. Using the 6-port cassette allows the customer the flexibility to add storage as needed. As the

customers storage demands increase, connectivity for the new tape drives can be added 6 channels at a time.

A hinged door makes it easy to access the fiber terminal area and ensures clean, well-organized fiber management

when closed . SL8500

Trunk Cables
Trunk Cables are an essential part of our Fiber

Management System. Compared to individual jumpers,

trunk cables significantly reduce the physical space and

number of cables required. They are available in custom

configurations that include ST, SC, ESCON, MTRJ, LC,

MU and MTP connectors.

Harnesses
Harnesses are used to hard wire production hardware for quick

connection to an MTP trunk cable. The external array consists

of an MTP connector to the connector type needed to attach to

the hardware.

Jumper Cords:
DCS jumpers provide the final link of connectivity within

the system. Whether used to connect a device to a zone or

patching ports at the Central Area Patching facility (CAP),

jumper cords are an essential piece of the equation.

Locking dust caps protect the

fiber connection and dont come

off until you take them off.

Lacing Bar Lack of cable management is one of the most common

reasons for cable failure in rack systems. Cable lacing bars offer multiple

options for securing cables in a rack enclosure. The L shaped lacing bar

is ideal for larger cable runs vertically through an enclosure and are available

with a 2, 4 or 6 offset.

Story
DCS Installs Fiber Management System
for Large Telecommunications Firm

In 2007, a large telecommunications firm asked DCS to design, and implement, a fiber management system

for their SAN infrastructure in one of their large enterprise data centers. The customers existing infrastructure

was point-to-point topology using jumper cables to connect director class switches directly to servers and

storage devices. The new infrastructure was part of a technology refresh involving the director class switches.

Within 48 hours, DCS provided the customer with a design using the Centralized Structured Fiber Cabling

method utilizing a Central Area Patching facility and seven strategically placed Zone Access Points.

The Central Area was created using a DCS Multi-bay racking system, 10U director patch panels, and 6U

patch panels (zone connections). The 10U director enclosures were loaded with 24 port and 48 port LC

coupler strips to mimic the director class switches and connect directly to the switches via 24 and 48

channel trunk cables. This isolates the director class switches from future move, add, and change activity.

We utilized 24x24x48 cabinets at the Zone Access Points filled with 6U 192 port LC patch panels. Four

96 channel trunk cables were used to connect each 6U zone patch panel to its corresponding 6U patch

panel at the Central Area.

In summary, the customer received a Fiber Management System with state-of-the-art products that

provide unmatched manageability, scalability and flexibility.

The customer noted they have seen a dramatic improvement in overall efficiency since implementing

the upgrade.

DCS provided the customer:

Infrastructure design

Products designed and manufactured specifically for the customers environment

Professional installation within the customers required timeframe
