Problem Statement and
Category
Cans are used widely in the food/beverage Manufacturing Industries for storage and distribution
worldwide. In the home, after the food is removed, disposals of the cans can be very
complicated.
Reasons are:
2) The sharp edges always destroy garbage bags and sometimes cause injuries.
3
Design Justification
The mechanism which was designed is a can crusher. It is designed to crush cans so that they can
be disposed of in a more practical manner. A stand for which the can crusher will be placed on
was also designed. The can crusher consists of five (5) parts in total, these are:
2) Knob
3) Crusher
4) Door
5) Handle
The mechanism works in such a way that the user has to open the door of the can crusher by
pulling on the handle of the door. The user would then place the can into the mechanism and
close back the door. The user would then have to pull down on the knob which would in turn
cause the crusher to be brought down to crush the can. The crusher and the knob would be
brought to its original position once the user stops pulling down on the knob as springs are
attached to the crusher and the knob. The mechanism is assembled in various ways. The handle
is placed unto the door using hexagonal screws, the door is attached to the main body of the
mechanism using two regular butt hinges, springs are attached to the crusher and also the knob
Even though the mechanism works, there are a few limitations. One being that the can crusher
cannot crush cans which are more than 7.4 inches in height and 4.7 inches in width or diameter.
Another limitation is that the knob may have to be brought down on more than one occasion for
4
the can to be fully crushed. The final limitation is that the door on the mechanism cannot be
locked which makes the device less safe for small children. In terms of safety precautions, a
stand is built to prevent small children from having access to the device as the door of the device
cannot be locked.
5
Market Listing and Cost
*The estimated cost of the can crusher along with the wooden stand is $3642.73 JMD.

Market Research
Upon the introduction of the can crusher to 20 persons, 78% said that they would purchase it
because it ease relatively cheap, it is simple to use and also it comes with a stand which the can
crusher can be placed on. The percentage of the people who liked the design also was pleased
with the aesthetics of the design as the can crusher was spray painted in a stainless steel colour.
Also people found the implementation of a door quite convenient because it reduces the chance
of an accident or children placing their hands inside the mechanism. The 22% percent of the
people who disliked the design was not pleased with the price and also were concerned that that
