L3 CMPT Final Major Project Reflective Entries

WEEKLY REFLECTIONS
This is where you think about your FMP learning journey and development.
Dont simply describe what you did - consider what you have learnt and how this has benefitted your project.

Week 1 / 2 This week you worked on your initial ideas and started your FMP
concept

How has writing a concept / proposal By Writing a concept helped me with finalising my idea as it gave me a
helped you with finalising your idea? more opened mind on what I want to do for my final piece, and what I
could do best for my final piece. After thinking about It I decided to do a
music video as out of everything I have done so far I worked best doing a
music video as that is what I am most interested in and have a bigger
understanding about.

How did the feedback help you adapt The feedback helped me adapt my idea as the feedback is telling me
your idea what did you change after what I have done well and what I need to work on so it is literally telling
feedback? me what to do to make it better. It also tells me what the public are
wanting which can link in to a target audience. After the feedback I had
people tell me to change the genre from a Drill music video to a Rock
music video as rock music video will open up to a larger audience then
what a drill music video would.

This week you worked on your initial ideas and started your FMP
Research

How has the research for your target The research for my target audience has helped me understand my
audience helped you understand your production more as I have researched what people want and what sort of
production more fully? people want that, and considering I asked quite a few different people
who arent similar they all expected roughly the same thing for a music
video. So by doing this I learnt that people would expect to see a
performance/narrative music video as that is what most rock music videos
are like, they also expected a lot of shots as it would make it boring if it
was slow shots. I also learnt everyone wanted the music video to be
uploaded on to YouTube.

How did your primary research help My primary research helped me a lot in making my final piece as I feel I
you? really got to know what people was wanting and along the way of doing
the primary research I was thinking of many ideas to use for my final
piece on the way of doing so.

How has researching the conventions By researching the conventions of my chosen genre it had helped me to
of your chosen genre helped you meet the distinction grade as by researching it, you can really see whats
understand what is required from you stereotypically in that sort of genre music video and what links in to a rock
in order to meet a distinction grade? song. This will make you reach your final piece as you are really making
sure your rock music video does look like a rock music video. So what I
done to make sure I achieved making it look like a rock video, is making
someone watch it without the music and just see the visuals and them to
guess what genre it is.

How has including a variety of Including a variety of sources of research helped me understand the
sources (primary and secondary) medium and the genre as you are getting plenty of research and feedback
helped with your understanding of so it literally is telling you what you need to include to make it suit and
your medium / genre? look as good as you possibly can make it.

High Grade Tips

Research
Thorough research - include plenty of sources and detailed analysis of this information
relevant & coherent make sure your research sources are not just the same as the Media product you
hope to make - and talk about how they inform your planning
sustained continue your research throughout the eleven-week project and dont just limit it to the first
two weeks
accomplished & considered all of the above referred to in your daily/weekly reflections

Week 2 / 3 This week you will start your planning

What did you learn from your By doing the research I have learnt that for a rock song I need to include
research? stereotypical aspects of a rock genre music video which is having a hybrid
video of a performance and a narrative music video, it also needs to show
fast moving shots and it needs to be filmed in a weird place, not
somewhere youd normally go.

How will this be useful to your This research will be useful for my planning as I can get points that
planning? people have told me from feedback or use points that I have found out by
surveys and google searches into my planning to make it as good as
possible and link into many things that I have researched and learnt by
doing the research.

What sources of information did you I looked at many different rock bands music videos, not just green days,
look at that were different from your and many more bands. Each video was different but they are all pretty
proposed project similar as most rock music videos are performance and narrative music
videos. They also have dark or messed up mise-en-scenes, these may
link in to rock concerts as rock concerts have mosh pits etc.

What did you learn from your planning From planning this week I have learnt a lot about the rock genre and what
this week people love to see in the music videos and what makes people want to
watch them. People want to watch them if they are interesting and if the
show the band, fan bases will come see it. I also learnt that literally
everyone I asked will only watch a music video if it is on YouTube as its
easy access for free, and you can look at other stuff before and after.

What issues did you encounter and The issues I faced this week with planning is that I didnt have enough
how did you over come them? people to send my survey to and for my final piece I wanted a lot of
feedback so I could produce what the public was wanting to the way I
overcame this problem is by getting one of my friends to send it to all of
their mates so I would get a better and larger feedback.

Planning & Production

effective planning, organisation your FMP Workbook will explain what you need to do in the next few
weeks to make sure all of your planning is completed, and also how this will help you
efficient production against timescales your FMP Proposal will clearly identify how you intend to
create your project before the deadline in May
commitment & subject engagement all of the above referred to in your daily/weekly reflections

Week 3 This week was the start of your production process

What practical work have you done This week I have started making my final major project booklet which
this week - and how helpful was your consists of the following; Brief, Script, Storyboard, prop list, Crew list and
earlier planning a continuity plan. My research before the planning has helped me very
much as now I have all the evidence of why I am doing what I do,
because of all the surveys I have sent off etc.

How will this be useful to you as your This will be useful to me as my production process goes a long as I can
production process continues follow my planning for example I can know what scene to shoot while
filming as I have a story board to following it up from, as well as having a
script, I know what needs to be said as I have a script to follow on from so
yes, the planning will be very useful to me as my production process
comes along.

Upload and pictures you have taken

What issues did you encounter and This week I faced a problem of not having a picture of an abandoned
how did you over come them? house that I am going to be filming my music video on however I have
overcome this problem by waiting in till I have filmed my production as I
can just take a picture of it when I get to the location.

High Grade Tips

Practical Skills & Presentation

Considered and capable demonstration of processes very detailed documentation of your
production process - such as still images, and annotated Screenshots of your specific production and
editing process including what and why, not just how
skills and knowledge used to develop alternative ideas evidence of different ideas developed for
more than one version of your Media product

Week 4 This week was the second week of your practical production

What did you learn in your sessions This week I was filming my production so I learnt a bit about using my
this week camera and what shots look better than others. I learnt just the general
things you would learn while shooting a shoot

Have you tried anything new this This week I have tried using a new camera that I have never used before
week - if so, was it a success which is more complex than a camera I have ever used before as it was a
very good camera, it was successful but I needed help to start with as I
didnt really know how to work some of it but I got the hang of the basics, I
would have liked it more if I had worked with that camera a bit more as I
could have included certain things the camera can do but I just didnt
know how to work it

What feedback did you find most The feedback I found most useful to me is written feedback as I can
useful verbal or written always fix what I have done wrong and keep looking back to what the
feedback was, however verbal you cant really look back at what the
person said, so at least with a written feedback you can look back at it.
But what I like about verbal feedback is that you can see who you are
speaking to.

How will this be useful to you as your This will be useful for my production as I can follow what I have filmed so
production process comes to a far and then carry on from where I stopped so I havent left anything
conclusion undone.

What issues did you encounter and This week I had faced two problems while filming my production. The first
how did you over come them? problem is that I was going to film some of my video in the woods of
someone smashing up a load of objects, however it rained that day and
when I checked the weather for the rest of the week, it said itll be raining
all of this week so I decided to just do all of them scenes in the
abandoned house, which has actually turned out better than expected as
it makes it look better in the music video and thinking about it now, filming
it in the woods would have looked a bit weird and the music video would
have lost its narrative. The other problem I faced is turning up to the
location where I am filming the whole music video

Week 5 This week was your finishing off week - for both your edits an
written work

What feedback did you find most The feedback I found most useful to me is written feedback as I can
useful verbal or written always fix what I have done wrong and keep looking back to what the
feedback was, however verbal you cant really look back at what the
person said, so at least with a written feedback you can look back at it.
But what I like about verbal feedback is that you can see who you are
speaking to.

What did you learn in your sessions This week I have learnt a lot about editing, Im still new to editing as lack
this week of experience and I havent really been told how to edit a video to a higher
level than to just cutting a few clips and put them together, however this
week I learnt how to us editing a bit better as I started to use special
effects and slow MOs in my video so I learnt how to edit better this week

How has this helped you meet your This have helped me as throughout making my production as I have a
targets - see FMP Workbook planning booklet to look back on to make sure I am doing everything the
way I was going to do it and if its achieving the goal of making it look like
a very rock genre music video.

How helpful did you find the pitch I found the pitch helpful as it allowed me to lay out my work in a
what feedback did you get? professional way to show to a crowd of people, I then talked the crowd
through what I have done and why exactly I done it so they have
reasoning for everything I have done for this production. It also boosted
my confidents as I dont like speaking in front of a big crowd however it
ended up very well and I got very good feedback from everyone exact
one person who said some of the shots wasnt as creative as expected.

How did your peer feedback help My peer feedback helped a lot as I got to see everyones opinion on the
finished project and see if I have achieved my goal on how it looked. All
the feedback I got was all very good as I had a lot of comments saying
editing was very well done, it was very understandable what was
happening and who the characters were and what genre of music video is
was, the only bad comment I got was some of the shots looked
amateur, which I disagreed with as I made sure I had many different
shots but thats just my opinion.

What issues did you encounter and A problem I faced this week was again learning how to edit better than I
how did you overcome them? could before, as I am very new to editing still because of lack of
experience and dont know how to put effects on or anything like that but i
got some help to help me make my editing look better by fast cuts to
different shots and I put slowmos in and other editing effects.
