Please include both GSE & TAG Standards
SEV1. Students will investigate the flow of energy and cycling of matter within an
ecosystem and relate these phenomena to human society.

a. Interpret biogeochemical cycles including hydrologic, nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen,

and carbon cycles. Recognize that energy is not recycled in ecosystems.

SEV5.e: Describe the effects and potential implications of pollution and resource depletion on the
environment on the local and global levels.

SEV5.b Describe the effects and potential implications of pollution and resource depletion on
the environment at the local and global levels (e.g. air and water pollution, solid waste disposal,
depletion of the stratospheric ozone, global warming, and land uses).

TAG STANDARDS:

Creative thinking and problem solving skills 6 & 7

High Order critical thinking skills 2 &15

Essential Question(s)
What should students know when lesson is completed?
Explain the process underlying the greenhouse effect
To form a model of a heating of the earths atmosphere
To provide an opportunity to build and test a physical model analogous to the atmospheric
greenhouse effect.
To practice setting up a controlled experiment; recording data, graphing and analyzing results.

Teacher Lesson Preparation

Modeling the greenhouse effect :Teaching activity
Data handout
Graph paper, Two-cut-off plastic soda bottles, 2 thermometers, masking tape, plastic wrap,
scissors, colored pencils, dark soil, sunlamp.

Activating Strategy (for example: Hook/Mini-Lesson/Warm-Up/Connection to Prior Learning)

Task 1:

How does global climate change threaten polar bears?

http://video.nationalgeographic.com/search?q=greenhouse+effect

*Ask students to explain the process in a written paragraph.

Task 2: Complete the Ozone cycle Organizer

Instructional Sequence and Activities including use of technology

1. Students will silently read the background information of the Modeling the greenhouse
effect
2. Teacher-led class discussion on the background information and the learning objectives.
3. Students will gather materials for the lab, set-up by following the procedure.
*Students will observe teachers set-up before collecting data.
4. Teacher will instruct students to begin measuring and recording the temperature (data)
from each bottle for 15 minutes.
5. Students will record their measurement for both covered and uncovered bottles (every
minute).
6. Teacher will ask to student for an analysis of their data collected.
7. Students will construct a graph of Modeling the greenhouse effect labeling the Y-axis
temperature (*C) and the X-axis Time (minutes)
**Students will draw conclusions based on the data and analysis of the lab.

Assessment Strategies

How student will demonstrate their understanding of the greenhouse effect.

An alien from another planet has just arrived and is perplexed by the controversy surrounding the
greenhouse effect and global warming. Heres how you can help:

Task 1: Draw a diagram illustrating the greenhouse effect. Label it carefully.

Task 2: Below your diagram write a concise paragraph that explains the diagram. Write neatly and use
correct English! Use the back of this worksheet if necessary.

Extension: Attached
1. Go to the EPA website above and generate reports for the specific location of the school. At the web
site: Select the geographic area for the report. Select the maps and reports you want for the class.
Select the types of measurements you want to consider. Participants should examine the reports
about their local area and then discuss what contributes to the status of air quality in their
community.
2. (see attached worksheet)
