A circular specimen is placed on the top of the tester, between two smaller horizontally
mounted metal discs.
The fabric is allowed to drape under its own weight.
With the help of a light and a parabolic mirror underneath the specimen, the drape image of the
fabric is reflected on to the paper ring.
After tracing the drape image, the paper ring is cut to separate the shadowed and non-shadowed
area.
The drape coefficient is then calculated - the shadow of the specimen is expressed as a
percentage of the whole paper ring.
This instrument has a variety of applications for assessment, such as: the effect of variation
in fabric construction and finish; quality control in the production of laminated fabrics and
fusible interlinings.
Paper rings are supplied in boxes of 500; with either 36, 30, or 24cm diameter. Very stiff specimens
will require the larger size paper ring for a successful test.
