sar, igualmente, la construccin de las dos obras siguientes de jeanneret, la villa
Stotzser y la villa Jacquemet, proyectadas durante u n a estancia del j o v e n arquitecto
en Vieh&j en 1908, y construidas en las proximidades de la v i l l a Fallet. Estas obras,
l o m i s m o q u e la casa rt$ i)id CtVtfts construida por Chapallaz para L'Eplattenier
en 1904, estaban destinadas a ser ejemplos de la nueva cultura jurasiana.
Pero, para gran disgusto de L Eplattenier, Jeanneret no iba a tardar en distan-
ciarse de estos p o s i c i o n a m i e n t o s regionalistas, en parte a causa de lo q u e haba
visto en Italia en el transcurso de un viaje c o n su a m i g o Lon Perrin en 1907, y
en parte c o m o consecuencia de su estancia en el estudio de Auguste y Gustave
Perret 2 desde el v e r a n o de 190H a n o v i e m b r e de 1909. Estas dos experiencias le
haban p e r m i t i d o descubrir dos rostros de la t r a d i c i n clsica: Siena, V e r o n a ,
Rvena, Padua y Florencia, p o r un lado, y, p o r otro, el clasicismo francs en
Pars. Por lo dems, su paso por el estudio de Perret haba reforzado las tenden-
cias -tecnoc ra ticas de su carcter, y en particular su deseo de participar en el
d e s a r r o l l o d e l h o r m i g n a r m a d o . Una visita ( p o r o t r o l a d o casi f o r t u i t a ) a la
Cartuja de Erna (Toscana) en el verano de 1907 d e s e m p e t a m b i n un papel
esencial, Jeanneret e n c o n t r en ella un m o d e l o de sociedad q u e iba a marcarlo
durante toda su carrera: Siento q u e una aspiracin humana autntica est col-
mada; el silencio, la soledad; p e r o t a m b i n el c o m e r c i o (el contacto c o t i d i a n o )
c o n los mortales: y asimismo el acceso a las efusiones 1 lacia lo i n a s i b l e - .
En 1908, p o c o antes de su ingreso en el estudio Perret T t u v o un encuentro
m e m o r a b l e c o n o t r o moderno clasico- c u a n d o v i s i t e l estudio d e T o n y Garnier
en Lyon. Fue este a c o n t e c i m i e n t o el q u e le h i z o t o m a r conciencia de la verdade-
ra d i m e n s i n de la t r a d i c i n clsica francesa;
Conoc a Tony Garnier en Lvon haca 3907, Era -Grand prix d'architecture, y fue desde
Roma desde donde envi su proyecto de Ciudad industrial*. Este hombre senta prxi-
mo el nacimiento de una nueva arquitectura, tasada en el fenmeno sociaL Sus planos
denotan Lana gran habilidad. Son el resultado de cien aos de evolucin arquitectnica
en Francia. Reina en ellos la ciencia francesa del plan J .

Segn Jean lJedt, permaneci taiorce meses en el estudio Perret, despus de tiaber lleudo a Paris en marzo de
9H sin un cntimo en el bolsillo, Gubler sostiene que trabaj ton los hermanas Perret desde e3 verano de 1906 a
noviembre de 919.

/reen Ja que atribuye la entera paternidad del libro a Jeanncret.
La perdurable importancia de Vers une archiiectureli deriva del hecho de
que, por vez primera, los aspectos antagnicos de la personalidad de Le
Corbusier -sus lados "acadmico* y "maquinista se reunan en una sntesis dial-
gica, firmemente unificada por la conviccin, heredada de Adol Loos, de que el
estilo de la nueva era exista ya. Para Le Corbusier esto era una evidencia absolu-
ta, atestiguada por el modo de vida de la gran metrpoli y, sobre todo, por las
realizaciones de la ingeniera civiL es decir, la "esttica del ingeniero- tal y como
se manifestad en estructuras como los silos de cereales, las gras y los puentes,
esas proezas de la ingeniera que, junto a Eos transportes mecanizados, haban
sido reconocidas como los elementos tecnolgicos ms importantes del nuevo
mundo industrial en los almanaques del f)eutscber Werkbund de 1913 y 1914, En
nombre de este mundo nuevo11 Le Corbusier fusion dos fenmenos culturales

distintos; por un lado, el reconocimiento producido en Alemania del significado
arquitectnico de estas tormas creadas por ingenieros, cuya importancia Walter
Gropius y otros autores del Werkbund haban sido los primeros en com-
prender 5 ; por otra parte, su propia experiencia de aspirante a industrial que tra-
taba de tmponerse en el terreno de la vivienda de masas estandarizada, Al mismo
tiempo, dos fenmenos estticos se superponan a esta interpretacin sinttica
del milenio por llegar. Kn primer lugar, estaba el aura surreal y un tanto inquie-
tante que adquiran las enormes estructuras tecnolgicas cuando surgan en un
entorno natural aparentemente intacto, como los viaductos ferroviarios de Eiffel o
los transatlnticos gigantes, listas mega estructuras eran percibidas como vectores
de un anticlasicismo dadasta que continuar jugando un papel sutilmente sub-
versivo en la evolucin de Le Corbusier, al menos hasta su esttica de la mqui-
na, tecnolgicamente acabada en 1933, En segundo lugar, haba tambin que
tener en cuenta la proliferacin paralela de objetos manufacturados. stos eran
vistos como un encade na miento de obfets t nm vs a la vez framente higinicos y
sensualmente utilitarios^1 pensemos en los innumerables objetos (fabricados en
parte a mano) que aparecieron en las pginas de Esprit notweau entre 1920 y
1925: sombreros de paja, polainas, zapatos, tabaqueras, maletas, vestidos, bidets
y lavabos, clasificadores, dinamos, ventiladores y otros accesorios de la vida coti-
diana moderna-. Cuando la revista se interrumpi despus del nmero 28, esta
ola aparentemente inagotable de objetos annimos fue momentneamente cana-
lizada por dos textos fundamentales que Le Corbusier p u b l i c en 1925,

Jules Borie, ideados para Pars en 185 * Est ultimo proyecto tea la lorma de tina
inmensa estructura residencial en hierro y vidrio iluminado desde arriba, inspirado
en el Oystal Pakice. y habra coronado con un vasto conjunto stifee el principio de
la rabia rasa*. Retomando esta escala.. Le Corbusier y jeanneret concibieron as man-
zanas perifricas de doce pisos de su Ciudad contempornea como versiones Sedu-
cidas del Aerdromo. A diferencia de lo que ocurra en el proyecto de Borie, tales
blocs celfules" estaban compuestos de apartamentos en dplex. Estos, de planta
en L, derivaban en parte del tipo de La celda de los cartujos y en parte de ta casa
Citrohan. El resultado daba lugar a una clula ce habitacin en L sobre dos niveles,
rodeando sobre dos lados una terraza suspendida y un pozo de luz. Era, en cierto
modo, una versin modificada del melaron Citrohan, con la cocina: la habitacin
de la criada y las habitaciones de nios d<_ invitados en uno de los lados. Este tipo
hbrido seguir siendo la Unidad de habitacin estndar de [<xlos los proyectos
residenciales verticales realizados por Le Corbusier entre 1922 y 1930; ser, sobre
todo, Ea unidad de base del proyecto de los -Immeub! es-Vil las- (1922) sobre ocho
pisos, que comprenda 96 clulas apiladas alrededor de un patio centra!. Es igual-
mente esta clula de vivienda en dplex la que se encuentra, en forma prototpica,
en el pabelln del Esprit nouveau. construido detrs dej Grand Pala is con motivo de
la Exposicin de Arles Decorativas de 1925.
Inspirada tanto en la Cit ndustrie^le Tony Garnter 1904-1918) como en el
proyecto de ciudad utpica de Bruno Taut, que culminaba en una corona simbli-
ca (vase el ibro Die Siadtkrorie de 1919K la Ciudad contempornea de Le
Corbusier, prevista para tres millones de habitantes, estaba mucho mas desarrolla-
da que casi todos los proyectos de ciudades anteriores, pero se encontraba encajo-
nada entre utopa y disiopa-: como la Hocbbausstadt (-ciudad rascacielos-) de
Ludwig Hilbcrseimer (1924), era ma$ una ciudad-mquina autoritaria que una ciu-
dad idlica. Al mismo tiempo, y de forma contraria al modelo de Hilberseimer, el
proyecto de Le Corbusier revelaba un Lrabajo partcula miente profundo sobre las
secciones. Por paradjico que pueda parecer, ello tenda a reforzar su carcter
"distpico-\ en el sentido de que inclua cinco niveles subterrneos, ms un pasaje
para peatones situado un nivel >01" debajo de la primera planta residencial. Estos
niveles variados deban acoger diferentes categoras de transportes y de servicios,

Incluida la red de metro existente, hundida a una gran profundidad. Sin negar las
referencias arcaizantes (algunas alusiones a los planos de Angkor Vat y de Pekn),
esta insolacin de la infraestructura de servicios en niveles mltiplas muestra,
sobre todo, la deuda de Le Corbuser con respecto a la Calle futura de Eugene
Hnard (1910), Le Corbuser se inspira tambin en Hriard en otras dos formas-
tipo: el neohaussmanniano bulevar redents [en zigzag] y ei universal cruce gira-
torio, que ocupan un lugar escogido en el proyecto de Ciudad contempornea^ .
Slo un examen atento de estos ltissemertts fcrtnse^ aparecer los aspec-
tos inhumanos del proyecto; ta axonometra ndica, en efecto, que el conjunto
de la red de calles estara prcticamente vaco. Salvo para acceder a los Coches
estacionados en la banda mediana, los peatones apenas tendran razones para
aventurarse por ella. Para lela men te, toda la. circulacin que atesta la ciudad
liaussmanniana sera alejada de las calles, hacia vas subterrneas o 1 lacia los
corredores que se elevaran por encima del suelo natural para servir a las unida-
des residenciales. Esta disposicin mecanizada se vea agravada por la propuesta
divisin de esas circulaciones en dos clases de peatones, los amos y los sirvien-
tes. El carcter perverso de tal disposicin fue, ciertamente, uno de los factores
que llevaron a Le Corbusier a abandonar para su tipo residencial, despus de
1922, el bloc a coi hiles [bloque de clulas I en beneficio del bloc redents [blo-
que en zigzag]^. Este ltimo constituir [a norma de todos sus proyectos urba-
nos hasta 1935, cuando lo abandone, a su vez. en aras del sistema de bloques,
ms flexible.
La Ciudad contempornea y la Ciudad radiante dependen ambas ele una
misma tipologa de base a escala del bloque ele casas: el immeubh d yedents
-anticalle", en retranqueo, sobre poHs y bajo el cual se extiende, al nivel del
suelo, un pasaje-parque* continuo. El otro tipo de base utilizado para los mode-
los de ciudad idea] de Le Corbuser es el rascacielos cruciforme. Este tipo apare-
ce por vez primera en e] p r o y e c t o t ie lilles-tours (ciu da des-torre] de 1920, que
comprenda edil icios de oficinas de sesenta pisos y de planta cruciforme.
Mientras que el bloc d redoits era una crtica explcita a la ciudad liaussmannia-
na, la torre cruciforme de muros ondulados se opona al rascacielos americano,
que en 1920 acababa sol mente de aparecer como una forma viable de <. lesa r ro-
llo urbano, ejemplificada sobre todo por el neogtico Wookvorth Butlding de
Cass Gilbert. terminado en Nueva York en 1913- Sin embargo, como han seala-
do Francesco Pa^santi y Stanislaus von *Moos. este tipo cruciforme tena numero-
sos precedentes, en el primer caso con el Eraterntty Temple de Louis Sullivan,
proyectado para Chicago en IH91, y en el segundo con el proyecto de Auguste
Perret de un barrio de torres de oficinas para Pars de 1922-^.
le Corbusier se mostrar veddeimente obsesionado por los rascacielos a lo
largo de todo el decenio siguiente: cuando publique, en 1934, Yilie radense

tras que el elemento clsico por excelencia, el peristilo, reaparece en los pilats que
sostienen el edificio, as como en la trama parcial de columnas de la planta libre en
el interior La fachada libre no era ya una especie de piel estructural articulada,
como en Notre-Dame du Raincy de Penet (1922), sino una membrana tensa que no
soporta ninguna carga, comparable, desde un punto de vista expresivo, a la tela de
las alas de un aeroplano. Otro rasgo caracterstico de esta membrana es, como
hemos visto, la ventana conida maquinista, preferida a la puerta-ventana humanista
de Perret, Esta transposicin entre valores tipolgicos diferentes conoce su apoteosis
