REPLACE CONTROLLER

Use this quick start guide to replace a controller in your Nimble CS array.

Time required: 10-30 minutes


Part required: Replacement controller ordered from Nimble Storage
Information required: RMA work order
Case number
Array serial number
Tools required: Philips screwdriver

If one controller fails, the other controller takes over. The array can function with one healthy controller while the
replacement is installed.
Replace the controller if any of its components, such as the NVRAM, cooling fans, or NIC, have failed.

CAUTION! Before you attempt to replace the controller:


Do not remove the failed controller until you are ready to install the replacement.
While a controller is removed, the internal temperature of the chassis can rise to critical levels.
Determine which controller to replace before making the replacement.
Verify that the replacement controller matches the part shown on the RMA work order.
Determine the Nimble OS version running on the array.
During controller replacement, you must remove the USB stick from the failed controller. (Step 3)

1 Label the cables with the provided eth/port connection labels so you can easily reconnect them
to the correct ports after the replacement is complete.

2 Remove the failed controller.
a. Remove all the cables from the controller to be replaced.
b. Unscrew the keeper to release the controller handle.

Note: Do not remove the power cord above the controller.


c. Grasp the controller by the handle, pull the controller firmly to remove it from the chassis bay.

CAUTION!
During controller replacement, you must remove the USB stick from the failed controller and install it into the
replacement controller.
Failure to perform the following step will prevent the new controller from coming online.

3 Remove the USB stick from the failed controller.


All components are fully visible when the controller is removed from the chassis bay.
a. Locate the USB stick in the failed controller.
b. Loosen the screw on the metal bracket that shields the USB stick and move it up and out of the way.
c. Gently but firmly pull the USB stick up and out of its socket.
d. Mark or label the USB stick from the failed controller.
e. Remove the USB stick from the replacement controller and set that USB stick aside.
f. Insert the USB stick from the failed controller into the replacement controller.
You should feel it seat into the USB slot.
g. Move the metal bracket back into position and tighten the screw.

4 Install the replacement controller.
a. Slide the new controller into the chassis bay. Do not force the controller. If it does not slide in easily, remove it
and try again.
b. After the new controller is in place, return the controller handle to its original closed position and tighten the
keeper screw.
c. Reconnect the network cables to the new controller.

5 Power the new controller.


Replacement controllers are shipped in a power-off state. Press the Power button ( ) on the front of the
array to power on the controller. (Powering on may take several minutes.)

CAUTION!
Do not press the Power button longer than a full second. Holding it down longer (five seconds) will completely
power off the array.

Note: The new controller might take up to 15 minutes to appear in the user interface.

6 Verify that the new controller powers up.


The controller LEDs remain dark until the controller is powered on. If the controller does not come online
automatically, press the Power button on the front of the chassis for one full second.
Important!
Holding the Power button down too long (five seconds) will completely power off the array.
Note: For arrays running 2.x, the new controller might take up to 15 minutes to appear in the user interface. If the
controller takes longer than 15 minutes to report an Active/Standby state, contact Nimble Support for assistance.

7 Contact Nimble Support. They will verify that the new controller is operating properly.

8 Return the failed controller as directed on the RMA work order.


Include the USB stick from the replacement controller (from step 3).
If the new controller does not come online automatically, tap the power button on the front of the chassis.
