3.0 Synopsis

This course is an introductory course on engineering materials. It introduces the fundamentals of

material science and engineering which covers atomic structure, interatomic bonding, crystal
structure, imperfections and diffusion in solid. It includes the utilization of phase diagram and
highlights the importance of phase transformation to postulate the microstructure and properties
specifically for metal based materials. Furthermore, the mechanical properties from elastic and
plastic deformation of engineering materials under stress and strain are briefly explained. At the
end, different type of other major engineering materials, i.e. metal alloys, ceramics, polymers,
and composites), its structure, types, general processing technique and application are also
given to equip the students with knowledge on engineering materials.
