1.0 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this set of calculations is to apply the required design and verification
on the steel members of the steel parapet for the project RESIDENTIAL TOWER
(2B+G+19+MECHANICAL FLOOR).
Figure 1 illustrates a general view of the parapet.
The steel parapet consists of vertical trusses and/or steel post supported on
the roof floor and concrete wall.
As per architectural specs, the cladding to be used for the parapet will be
perforated aluminum sheet cladding.
The design tools that have been used in this project are:
4.1 AISC 2010, Code and Specifications for Structural Steel Buildings.
4.2 LRFD ASCE 7-10, Minimum Design Loads For Building and Other
Structures.
4.3 Euro Code 3 For designing the Connections.
5.0 M AT E R I A L P R O P E RT I E S
5.2 Bolts:
- Tension Capacity fu=560 N/mm2 (Grade 8.8)
- Shear Capacity fv=375 N/mm2 (Grade 8.8)
5.3 Welding:
- FEXX = 480 N/mm2

6.0 LOADS
The Self-weight of the structure was based on the weight of all proposed
elements according to their dimensions and material density.
Figure 2 illustrates load case 1 (self-weight of steel members).
B. Self-weight of cladding
0.1 KN/m2 uniformly distributed load has been adopted to cover the
weight of the cladding and its fixation.
- WIND
Velocity pressure qz at the top of the parapet (92m from the ground
level)
Where the level of the top of the parapet is 92.05 and the level of the
ground is 4.05 meters.
qz = 0.613 Kz Kzt Kd V2
Where:
The following table 1 describes the adopted load cases and their nature in the
numerical model.
8.0 LOA D C O M B I N AT I O N S
Table 2 contains the list of ultimate load combinations ULS and service load
combinations used in the numerical model in order to obtain the factored and
service internal forces in the structural members.
9.0 S T R U C T U R E A N A LY S I S
- The maximum horizontal deflection in the vertical truss according to service load
combination equals to D:
D = 79.1mm while the allowable horizontal deflection is Dall:
Dall = L/ 150 = 21250 / 180 = 118 mm > 79.1mm Ok.

b. Design of members
* The design of steel members of the main truss and the parapet has been developed
using the Robot software considering the combination of the internal forces effects.
The following figures show the shear and moment diagram of vertical truss, columns
and horizontal members.
Appendix A includes the verifications on the steel members of the trusses by the
software.
Appendix B includes typical splice connection design and verification.
Appendix C includes the reactions according to ULS of the vertical trusses and
columns to be confirm by the slab designer for the adequacy of the slab.
