1.0 INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this set of calculations is to apply the required design and verification
on the steel members of the steel parapet for the project RESIDENTIAL TOWER
(2B+G+19+MECHANICAL FLOOR).
Figure 1 illustrates a general view of the parapet.

Figure 1: General view

2.0 DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS

The steel parapet consists of vertical trusses and/or steel post supported on
the roof floor and concrete wall.
As per architectural specs, the cladding to be used for the parapet will be
perforated aluminum sheet cladding.

3.0 DESIGN TOOLS AND METHODS

The design tools that have been used in this project are:

3.1 Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis Professional 2015 Software, by

Autodesk
3.2 Design of concrete structures, Thirteen Edition 2004, by Nilson-Darwin-
Dolan
Page |4

The design methods were as follows:

3.3 Manual methods to generate loads and apply a preliminary analysis on
the size of the elements
3.4 Finite Element Method for obtaining the final forces and displacements of
the structure

4.0 DESIGN CODES

The following code was used in the design of the project:

4.1 AISC 2010, Code and Specifications for Structural Steel Buildings.
4.2 LRFD ASCE 7-10, Minimum Design Loads For Building and Other
Structures.
4.3 Euro Code 3 For designing the Connections.

5.1 Steel (275):

- Yield strength fy=275 N/mm2
- Modulus of elasticity E=205000 N/mm2
- Density =78.5 KN/m3

5.2 Bolts:
- Tension Capacity fu=560 N/mm2 (Grade 8.8)
- Shear Capacity fv=375 N/mm2 (Grade 8.8)

5.3 Welding:
- FEXX = 480 N/mm2

6.1 Case1: Dead Load

A. Self-weight of steel members

The Self-weight of the structure was based on the weight of all proposed
elements according to their dimensions and material density.
Figure 2 illustrates load case 1 (self-weight of steel members).

Figure 2: Load case 1 steel members self-weight

B. Self-weight of cladding
0.1 KN/m2 uniformly distributed load has been adopted to cover the
weight of the cladding and its fixation.

Figure3 illustrates the load case 1 (Self-weight of cladding).

Page |6

Figure 3: load case 1, cladding self-weight

- WIND

The design of the wind load is according to the American specifications,

and the ASCE 07-10 is the adopted reference code for the design.

The maximum wind speed as per Qatar Specifications equals to 45

m/sec

The project is considered as Exposure C

Velocity pressure qz at the top of the parapet (92m from the ground
level)
Where the level of the top of the parapet is 92.05 and the level of the
ground is 4.05 meters.

qz = 0.613 Kz Kzt Kd V2
Where:

Kz is the velocity-pressure exposure coefficient

Kz = 2.041 (z/zg)2/a
Where zg = 274.32m
Page |7

Kz = 2.041 x (92/274.32)(2/9.5) = 1.6

Kzt is the topographic factor

Kzt = 1
Kd is the wind directionally factor and equals to 0.85

That leads to:

qz = 1.7
The design wind pressure for the effect of parapets equals to Pp:
Pp = qz (GCpn)
Where GCpn = +1.5 (windward parapet)

Pp = 1.7 x 1.5 = 2.6 KN/m2

As mentioned on design assumption, perforated aluminum cladding is to

be use as per architectural specification and drawings. In this regard, the
applied wind pressure considered on this design calculation will be 25%
less than the actual calculated design pressure is 2KN/m2 Acting on all of
the parapet surface without considering the openings.

6.2 Case 2: Wind pressure (Wind1)

Figure 4 illustrates load case 2, wind 1

numerical model.

Table 2 contains the list of ultimate load combinations ULS and service load
combinations used in the numerical model in order to obtain the factored and
service internal forces in the structural members.

a. Verification on the displacements of the Structure:

Figure 6 shows the maximum displacement 79.1mm.

- The maximum horizontal deflection in the vertical truss according to service load
combination equals to D:
D = 79.1mm while the allowable horizontal deflection is Dall:
Dall = L/ 150 = 21250 / 180 = 118 mm > 79.1mm Ok.

b. Design of members

* The design of steel members of the main truss and the parapet has been developed
using the Robot software considering the combination of the internal forces effects.
The following figures show the shear and moment diagram of vertical truss, columns
and horizontal members.

Appendix A includes the verifications on the steel members of the trusses by the
software.
Appendix B includes typical splice connection design and verification.
Appendix C includes the reactions according to ULS of the vertical trusses and
columns to be confirm by the slab designer for the adequacy of the slab.
