(Q.1) A random sample of n=25 values give =83. Can this sample be regarded as drawn from
a normal population with mean =80 and =7?

(Q.2) Test the hypothesis that the mean of a normal population with known variance 70 is 31,
if a sample of size 13 gave xx=34. Let the alternative hypothesis be H 1: 31, and let
=0.10 .

(Q.3) A random sample of 100 observations from a population known to be non-normal

yielded the sample values xx=182 and S=299. Test the hypothesis H 0: 180 against H1:
180. Let =0.05.

(Q.4) A random sample of 100 workers with children in day care shows a mean day-care cost
of Rs. 2600 and a standard deviation of Rs. 500. Verify the departments claim that the mean
exceeds Rs. 2500 at the 0.05 level with this information.

(Q.5) Suppose that the mean of a random variable X is unknown but the variance for X is
known to be 144. Should we reject the null hypothesis H0: =15 in favour of an alternative
hypothesis H1: 15 at =0.05, if a random sample of 64 observations yields a mean
xx=12?

(Q.6) Form Previous Records It is Known that the duration of treating a disease by a start
medicine has a mean of 15 days. It is claimed that a new medicine can reduce the treatment
time. To test this claim, the new medicine is tried on 70 patients and their mean time of
recovery is recorded to be 14.5 days with a variance of 9.
(Q.7) The mean life time of electric light bulbs produced by a company has in the past been
1120 hours with a standard deviation of 125 hours. A sample of 100 electric light bulbs
recently chosen from a supply of newly produced bulbs showed a mean life time of 1070
hour. Test the hypothesis that the mean life time of bulbs has not changed, using 5% level of
significance.

(Q.8) A random sample of 9 values from a normal population gave the following values.
66,68,62,61,59,67,64,66,63
Test the hypothesis that the mean in the population is 60, given = 3, = 10%

(Q.9) Suppose that the mean of a random variable X is un known but the variance of X is
known to be 144. Should we reject the null hypothesis Ho: =15 in favour of an alternative
hypothesis H1: 15

At a level of significance of =0.05, if a random sample of 64 observations yields a mean

x =12? What are the 95% confidence limits for .

(Q.10) For each of the following, a random sample of size n is taken from a normal
2
distribution with mean and variance . The sample mean is x . Test the hypothesis
stated, at the level of significance indicate.

(Q.11) A random sample of size 36 from a normal population with variance 24 gave xx1 = 15.
A second sample of size 28 from another normal population with variance 80 gave xx2 = 13.
Test H0: 1 2 =0 against H1: 1 2 0. Let = 0.05.

(Q.12) The two samples A and B detailed below, were taken from normal population of
standard deviation 0.8. Test whether the difference of means is significant.
A 10.5 11.6 12.7 12.9 13.5 13.6 14.8
B 11.3 12.4 12.4 13.9 14.2 14.7 14.9 15.6

(Q.13) A form of intelligence test was given to random samples of soldiers and sailors in a
certain country. The following results were recorded:
Number in Samples Mean Score Sample Standard
Deviation
Solders 332 12.78 2.43
Sailors 615 12.99 2.48

Assume the population of scores to be normal. What conclusion should be drawn?

(Q.14) (a) A sample of size 6 from a normal population with variance 24 gave xx1 = 15. A
sample of size 8 from a normal population with variance 80 gave xx2 = 13. Test H0: 1 2 =0
against H1: 1 2 0. Let =0.05.
(b) A random sample of size n1 = 25, taken from a normal population with a standard
deviation 1 = 5.2, has a mean xx1 = 81. A second random sample of size n2 = 36, taken from a
different normal population with a standard deviation 2 = 3.4, has a mean xx2 = 76. Test the
hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance that 1 = 2 against the alternative 1 2.

(Q.15) The tow samples A and B detailed below were taken from normal populations of
standard deviation 2.5. decide whether the difference of sample means is significant at the
0.05 level of significance.
A 16 18 23 26 19 24 25 23 21 22
B 20 21 23 25 25 27 24 26 24 28

first class, mean grade was 74 with standard deviation of 8, while in the second class the
mean grade was 78 with standard deviation of 7. Is there a significance difference between
mean grades (i) at 5% level of significance? (ii) at 1% level of significance?
