Experience
Oil Sands
The Canadian Oil Sands are one of the largest
and most significant unconventional hydrocarbon
resources in the world today. Albertas remaining
proven oil reserves of 170 billion barrels includes
a contribution of 168 billion barrels from the oil
sands. Canadas proven oil reserves are 13 percent of
total global oil reserves. Production as of 2015 was
approximately 2.1 million barrels per day from the oil
sands. There are four main oil sands regions including
Athabasca, Peace River, Cold Lake and Saskatchewan.
The greatest quantity is found in the Athabasca
deposit.

The oil/bitumen within the oil sands is recovered


through two main methods: open pit mining and
in-situ thermal recovery. Approximately 20 percent
of the recoverable oil sands are recoverable through
mining methods due to their depth of burial. In
