Figure 1: Full-wave center-tapped rectifier circuit and voltage waveforms

b) Figure 1 shows a full-wave center-tapped rectifier circuit and its input and output
voltage waveforms. The ac source is 110 V rms at 50 Hz, R = 5 W, vs1 = vs 2 = vs .

i. Based on the given output voltage waveforms, derives and prove the
2Vm
average output voltage, Vo,dc = . [3 marks]

iii. Determine the power absorbed by the load. [2 marks]
iv. Determine the minimum blocking voltage for the diodes used in this
rectifier. Justify your answer using KVL. [3 marks]
v. State a PRO and CON of this rectifier circuit comparing to the full-wave
bridge rectifier. [2 marks]

Question 2 [20 marks]

a) Design a single phase half wave controlled rectifier which drives an RL-source
load. Please sketch the controlled rectifier circuit. [5 marks]

b) Figure 2 illustrates the input voltage waveforms, v(t) = 240 sin wt and the source
voltage, E = 100V.

Figure 2: Input voltage waveform and source voltage waveform

By setting the firing angle, a, to 90, sketch the following waveforms on the
given template.
i. the expected output voltage, vo, waveform, [4 marks]
ii. the expected output current, io, waveform, [2 marks]
iii. the expected switch voltage, vS1 waveform. [4 marks]
Please indicate all the important peak quantities. Assume that no forward
conduction loss for the power switch used in your design circuit and the
extinction angle, b is equivalent to 225.

c) Propose a method to increase the average output voltage. Briefly explain the
circuit operation and sketch the new expected output voltage, vo, waveform.

Formula:
Trigonometry:
sin 2 q + cos 2 q = 1
sin ( A B ) = sin A cos B cos A sin B
cos ( A B ) = cos A cos B m sin A sin B
tan A tan B
tan( A B ) =
1 m tan A tan B
sin 2 A = 2 sin A cos A
cos 2 A = cos 2 A - sin 2 A = 2 cos 2 A - 1 = 1 - 2 sin 2 A
2 tan A
tan A =
1 - tan 2 A

Integration:
