INTRODUCTION
Whatever its musical significance, New Wave has also been the cause of
a revolution in the recording industry. Singles, regarded as an obsolescent
medium a few years ago, have now resumed their importance as a means of intro
ducing new talent and new ideas, as have the New Wave-originated devices of
limited collectors' editions, colored vinyl, odd-size pressings, and bizarre
marketing techniques. For all these reasons, in addition to the cultural impli
cations of the Punk movement itself, the records that served as the medium of
New Wave music in the formative years are sure to assume increasing importance,
increasing value to collectors, and ever-greater legendary status, with each
passing year.
Since so many of these records were ephemeral to start with, the passage of
time will also make it more difficult to reconstruct the details. Assembling a
definitive collection of New Wave records is, even today, flat-out impossible.
As one who collects everything from '50s rockabilly to '60s punk rock, Spector,
Liverpool groups, etc., I'm accustomed to the problems of finding rare records ,
from 10, 20, even 30 years ago, but hardest of all has been locating records like
Blitzkrieg Bop on Mortonsound or the Moors Murders on Popcorn, made less than a
year ago. So many New Wave records are made in deliberately limited pressings,
and of course there are the ploys designed to foil collectors, such as the release
of the Devo album in 5 different colors of vinyl, or the limiting of picture sleeves
to the first few copies, or putting out records exclusively for distribution at a
party or gig and the many groups who have released demo recordings for the papers
and record companies, never available to the public. It goes on and on getting-
them all is impossible, and simply documenting them all is unlikely.
Still, this book is meant as a starting place. The information here, when
not taken from actual records, is derived from a wide range of catalogs, papers,
and other sources. I'm pretty confident there there is less than a 5l factor of
doubtful or missing data, and hopefully much of that can be supplied by readers
in time for the next edition.
All the problems of researching this volume are compounded many times over
when we deal with New Wave recording in other countries. America, without the
centralized music scene found in England, is a nightmare of local releases from
thousands of different cities. Notwithstanding this, a companion volume is now
in the works which will attempt to document the American (and Canadian) side
of New Wave recording. In this book, I have included some listings for other
countries, none of which is to be regarded as remotely complete, although as a
starting point it will hopefully stimulate others, closer to the source, to further
research.
I would be most grateful for any additional listings or details on things
already listed, which can be incorporated in future editions. In such things as
variations of vinyl colors or packaging, I have made only a token attempt to
include what information was readily available, and would appreciate the assist
ance of readers in filling thfese gaps. Please send addenda, along with any
other comments on the present work and suggestions for future works, to me at:

NEW WAVE RECORDING IN BRITAIN
New Wave (or Punk) music began in 1975. Whether it started in New York
with Patti Smith, Television and the Ramones, or in England with the Sex Pistols,
Eddie & the Hot Rods, the Damned and the Count Bishops, is about as relevant a
concern as whether rock & roll started with Elvis Presley or Roy Brown. The fact
seems to be that New Wave started in both countries out of a common regard for
certain musical values (English and American) that had been overlooked since the
late '60s, a belated appreciation of groups like the Stooges, N.Y. Dolls and
the Velvets and a growing cult audience for same, and also out of a common
boredom with the state of '70s rock. Due to conditions (cultural, social,
political, economic, etc.) in England, it caught on more immediately and with
greater vitality than in America, resulting in the profusion of records and
groups documented in the pages that follow.
It would have been better, perhaps, if the explosion had taken place in
the United States, or if the setup of the record industry in America also
prevailed in England. In the U.S., there are thousands of local and regional
record labels, pressing plants, etc., and a tradition of grass-roots music going
back far beyond the birth of rock & roll. If the youth of America had been as
ready for a New Wave revolution as their counterparts in England, it might have
assumed massive proportions in very little time. Why it didn't is another matter;
the fact is that the explosion of groups in England was met by a handful of
indifferent major record labels and a slightly larger number of equally-apathetic
custom labels, distributed through majors but run generally by successful producers
of bubblegum pop records. So the Sex Pistols were at the mercy of EMI, A&M and
the like, the Hot Rods went to Island, the Jam to Polydor, and the Clash to CBS,
while most of the other groups, rejected as 'not good enough', had to find
other alternatives.
The first alternatives in England were the Stiff and Chiswick labels (al
though in the interest of historical accuracy we must point out that both were
preceded and no doubt inspired by the 'underground' labels Skydog (France) and
Dynamite (Holland) that were the first to serve the cult audience which grew into
New Wave), both formed prior to the general recognition of New Wave. Chiswick
was launched by Ted Carroll, proprietor of the popular Rock On oldies shops,
primarily to issue records of interest to '50s and '60s collectors and occasional
productions by local groups with traditional roots. Stiff was formed as a
tongue-in-cheek parody of other record companies by various pub-rock alumni and
members of the Dr. Feelgood/Brinsley Schwarz circle who wanted an outlet for
their off-the-wall productions. Both companies quickly saw the potential for fun
and profit in New Wave, and became leaders in developing new talent, but it took
another year before there was any significant attempt to follow their example.
By the end of 1977 there were a few regionally-based New Wave labels, and groups
themselves had discovered how to release their own records.
7
The majors were sometimes willing to distribute certain small labels, but
where they'd take Stiff it was out of the question that they'd handle something
like the Pork Dukes doing "Bend and Flush". The success of records like these
was made possible by the development of alternative distributers like Lightning,
Rough Trade, and Bizzarre, along with mailorder companies like Small Wonder,
Parrot, and No Pap. Through Lightning and Rough Trade, records could get into
at least a couple of hundred stores around the country, and into the hands of
anyone who didn't have access to those shops through the ads in NME and Sounds.
Sales through these outlets, combined with exports through the same channels,
made it possible by 1977 for a typical New Wave 45 or EP to sell in the neighbor
hood of 10,000--and often as much as 30,000 without being on the charts and
totally without airplay. Contrast this with average sales of 3,000 and a peak of
5,000 for America's New Wave independents, and it's easy to see why England's
scene has continued to thrive despite being a relatively small market. Although
major labels and major groups would probably lose money with those sales figures,
considering their greater expenses and overhead, a group or small label whose
only investment is a couple hundred dollars (or pounds) for 8-track studio time
can easily make enough of a profit to finance future records, even if the first
one doesn't lead to a lucrative major recording contract.
This seems likely to remain the pattern for some time. When Punk started
it was extreme, uncommercial and frightening to the industry and the public.
As it became somewhat accepted and punk groups found it possible to get major
deals, a new "wave" of experimental artists began to emerge through the under
ground channels. And when Thrbbbing Gristle is in the Top 10, hopefully the
small labels will be introducing newer, still more adventurous sounds that will
sustain England's reputation as the source of the most exciting and revolutionary
music of our time.
(A) = American (Fr) = French (Gr) = German, etc. All records listed are British
releases unless otherwise indicated.
(blue) (red) etc indicates some copies of record were pressed in colored vinyl
(PS) = Picture Sleeve, or art sleeve, or some special packaging
(7") (12") = record released in various sized pressings. All records may be
assumed to be 7" unless otherwise indicated. If both 7" and 12" versions exist,
both are listed. If 12" is listed without (7"), record was issued only in 12" form.
We have omitted information on colored vinyl & alternate PS that may have been
issued in non-English countries other than America, as such information is scattered
at best. We have also excluded many marginal- or pseudo-wave artists (Ultravox,
Fabulous PoodTos, Darts, Pirates, Chris Spedding) on purely arbitrary grounds, along
with rockabilly (except in label listings) and American artists such as Heartbreakers
Cherry Vanilla, etc., even though most of their records are of British origin.

THE INDEPENDENT BRITISH LABELS
Most of the new British independents have been artist-owned, and few have had more than
one or two releases by the featured artist, and the odd release by some related group.
A few labels have been started by popular record shops, such as Rock On (Chiswick), and
of these many have helped develop the regional scenes outside of London--notably Raw
Records (Cambridge), Zoom (Edinburgh), and Rabid (Manchester). An excellent survey of
small labels was done in ZigZag 82 (available from 10 Kennet St, Reading, Berks.) and
we are indebted to it for much of the information in this section.
BEGGARS BANQUET
Beggars Banquet is a chain of 4 stores around London specializing in New Wave
BESERKLEY RECORDS
Beserkley is an American company that has been through a bewildering variety of
distribution deals, both in the U.S. and overseas. In England they were distributed
first by UA, who put out a Modern Lovers single and an album by Earth Quake before the
rights were taken away and given to Island, and later divided up with Decca, with the
Beserkley people themselves opening offices in London in early '78 and handling much of
the work independently. In 1978, Beserkley began signing British artists as well as
merely putting out their American product.

CHISWICK RECORDS
Chiswick was started in 1976 by Ted Carroll, owner of the small but thriving chain
of oldies shops known as Rock On. Ted, a fanatic for '50s and '60s rock, had been
involved with many groups in the '60s Beat Band era, and his taste for music with
traditional roots and fan appeal led him to make Chiswick into one of England's most
tasteful, yet unassuming independent labels. With Stiff, Chiswick has sponsored a
series of talent competitions that have uncovered many fine new bands. Though not as
flamboryant as their rival Stiff, Chiswick has built up a substantial catalog of rock
& roll, blues, rockabilly, punk, and classic reissues (Elvis, Link Wray, etc.)

FAULTY PRODUCTS
This mini-conglomerate of labels was the brainchild of Miles Copeland, manager of
such 'boring old fart 1 type groups as Climax Blues Band, who knew a good thing
when he saw it. When punk started breaking big in England, he offered Mark P. (editor
of Sniffin' Glue) his own label to record acts of his choice (Step Forward) and
later did the same with John Cale, also using Cale to produce local artists for
Copeland's other punk labels, Illegal and Deptford Fun City. Cale's label, Spy,
was to have been started up in America through Wartoke, and while Cale produced
tracks by several American bands including the Poles, Sic F*cks and Necessarys,
only one record, by Harry Toledo, has come out as of this writing.

RAW RECORDS
Started in mid-1977 by Lee Wood, owner of a small Cambridge record shop, Raw quickly
became one of the most innovative small labels, with the Soft Boys (one of the best
groups to emerge in England during '77), their reissues of Creation and the Hammersmith
Gorillas, the revival of the Downliners Sect, and the release of such rockabilly bands
as the Riot Rockers and Matchbox. Other Raw discoveries, including the Killjoys,
Users, Unwanted, and the Eyes, are excellent, 'raw' punk bands.

STIFF RECORDS
Started by Jake Riviera and Dave Robinson with a small amount of cash borrowed from
Dr. Feelgood, Stiff was originally intended as an outlet for non-commercial recordings
by the circle of ex-pub rock musicians including the various Feelgoods, Brinsleys,
Dave Edmunds, Ducks Deluxe, etc. When punk rock came in, Stiff was quick to get
involved with the Damned and others, although their policy was always to promote
quirky, eccentric talent with tongue-in-cheek humor that was reflected in their use
of packaging, catchy slogans, badges, etc. Stiff was not only the first, but the most
successful of t h e n e w British labels, and despite having produced Elvis Costello and
incipient stars Nick Lowe and Ian Dury, Stiff remains a maverick in the industry,
releasing obscure American punk groups, old R&B, anything that strikes their fancy.
Never concerned with keeping their records in print ("we're a record company, not a
museum!" in the words of one Stiff spokesman), Stiff has been known to delete some
releases within a week after they came out, and few fans are lucky enough to have all
the label's releases.

DYNAMO (Amsterdam)
A spinoff of Skydog, Dynamo/Dynamite was run by Pieter Meulenbroeks, and in addition

they did original recordings of Shakin 1 Stevens, Sean Tyla, and the Count Bishops, among

SKYDOG RECORDS (Paris)
The first underground/new wave label anywhere, Skydog started in '73 with semi
official EPs by the Flamin' Groovies and despite chaotic management and other
problems, they've continued to release some important recordings, such as the album
Metallic K.O. by the Stooges. Recently Skydog has reissued some early Stiff singles
and begun recording local French bands.
