Design Brief: Electronic Messaging

Background: You are graduating this year and are on your way to college, and your
parents want to keep in touch with you while you are away.

Problem: While away at college your parents want to keep in touch with you, but they are
technologically illiterate. They do not want to have to call you all the time, so they would
like to use another method of communication. You need to create step-by-step instructions
on how to send an email, text message, or send a message on Facebook so they can stay in
touch with you. You will also need to tell them how they can check to see if you responded.

Specifications: Must be typed and should be about one page in length

Use the rules of technical writing:
1. No opinions or subjective descriptions
2. Using exact numbers and measurements
3. Keep the number of steps to around seven by breaking up into segments
(example: creating email account, starting a new message, attaching a file,
sending the message, and checking for a response)

Procedure:
1. Describe the all of the steps necessary to:
a. Create an email account/Facebook account
b. Send a message with an attached file
c. Check for a response
2. Include what inputs and processes are necessary to achieve an expected desired output.
3. Include how the feedback loop can help operate the email, mobile phone, or Facebook.
4. Perform a self-test of the instructions.
5. Perform an additional test with another person.
6. Students will create a systems model with their instructions identifying the input,
process, output, and feedback.

How to make an e-mail account:

Click on the Free Sign Up Button

Enter all mandatory fields (First Name, Last Name, Gender, etc.)
Type in your desired Email Address
Choose a secure Password (at least 8 characters, mixing letters, numbers, lower and
upper case, and using special characters)
Select your Security Question, type in your Answer
Verify your registration by typing the numbers in the captcha picture
Click the "Accept" - Button underneath

How to send a message with an attached file:

Click compose
Right click the blank field
Choose add attachment option
Browse your directory and locate the file you want to attach
Click attach underneath

How to check for a response

Click inbox
Choose the refresh option
New e-mails should be highlighted white
Left click the e-mail youd like to open
Click the back button to go back and check for more e-mails
