Logo Design for Performing Artist:
Moose Blood

Andrea Chang
INQUIRY & ANALYSIS
Rationale
The purpose of this project is to redesign a logo for the performing band Moose Blood. My
goal is to update their logo and create something that is better designed, and more memorable than their
current logo. This is an important project because this band does not currently have a well known logo that
is used across all of their branding and merchandise, and I will create something that can be and is used
to create a cohesive brand for Moose Blood. A remarkable logo is one of the most important things to
promote a band. It is essential to the bands overall branding, as this logo will be used on the bands
website, social media, merchandise, instruments, and music. In order to create the most effective logo, I
will conduct research into aspects that make logos successful.
My target audience is the bands audience, which is, for the most part, a teenage
demographic. Specifically, teenagers who are interested in emo, rock, indie, and alternative music and
subcultures. My logo design will be informed by the colours, and other design elements that appeal
specifically to this audience. In order to investigate the design preferences of this audience, I will analyze
and identify common design themes among similar artists to Moose Blood.
This logo will be one that can easily fit onto merchandise for the performing artist, on things
like t-shirts, posters, and bracelets, and additionally be able to be integrated easily onto album covers,
posters, and instruments that the band uses. Additionally, this logo needs to reflect the essence of this
band, and represent them well. In order to create a logo that truly reflects Moose Blood, I will conduct
extensive research into the band itself, in addition to all of their current branding and logo utilisation.

About Moose Blood:
Moose Blood is an English band with emo and indie influence, citing Nirvana and Brand
New as their biggest influences. They have been described as off-kilter, sunshine friendly emo, which
may seem like an oxymoron, but I believe that it means that they use many of the traditional emo
musical conventions like specific drum patterns and bass lines, but without producing especially sad,
angsty music. They were formed in 2012, so they have had time to establish themselves as a band, but
are not old enough to really have had any prominent musical style change or development. Each
member of the band had hardcore metal roots, but when they formed the band they decided to take
their music in a completely new direction.
They have a very distinctive attitude that makes their music sound very homemade and
relatable. Their music has an essence of youth and free mindedness, and is relaxing and comfortable. In
my logo, I will try and reflect the character of their music by using fewer harsh and bold shapes, lines,
and colours, and avoiding an overly professional, impersonal logo.
The name Moose Blood does not have a significant meaning; the band members just
wanted an animal in the name, and were trying out silly band names, and this one just stuck. This gives
me more freedom as a designer, as I do not have to convey a specific meaning through my logo. Instead,
I will be able to interpret the name Moose Blood however I like.

Moose Bloods Current Branding and Merchandise
Moose Bloods Current Branding and Merchandise
Moose Bloods current branding and merchandise is based of off their
most recent album, Blush (2016).
With this album, their primary colour used is a pastel pink, with many of
their official photos using a pink filter, their album being completely
pink, and their merchandise using pink as an accent colour, inspired by
blush.
In terms of typography, they only utilise one font, which is all capital
letters, sans serif, and very simple and easy to read. The outlines of this
font is used for titles, and the regular, bold font is used for all other text.
Overall, their current style is extremely minimalistic and serene. They
use soft colours, and a minimal amount of pattern. For example, their
album cover only contains a pink and blue image of rippling water, and
the bands name and album title.
Analysis of Existing Products
Moose Bloods Current logo:
Contrast:
The base colour is black, with a pale pink accent colour,
which has high contrast. Additionally, everything is done
with a sharp lines which adds to the contrast.
Repetition:
The same style of typography in addition to the style of the
logo is repeated throughout the logo- everything is done
with a pale pink outline.
Alignment:
The ends of the typography are aligned to the ends of the
logo. Additionally, almost the entire logo is perfectly
symmetrical, and uses completely straight lines.
Proximity:
This logo is quite minimalistic, and there is a lot of open
space throughout the logo. Each element has a
proportionate amount of space between each other, so
that the logo looks connected, but still spacious.
Analysis of Existing Products
Real Friends (one of Spotifys suggested artists) logo:
Contrast:
This logo has a lot of contrast because although it utilizes the
same colour throughout the logo, all elements are outlined in
dark gray.
Repetition:
Only one font is used throughout the logo, and the handwritten
style of the typography is repeating in the hand drawn look of
the illustration.
Alignment:
The typography and illustration are all vertically, centrally
aligned. Additionally, everything in the logo is completely
horizontal with no slanting.
Proximity:
All elements have great proximity because there are no parts
of the logo with excessive empty space, but all elements also
still have enough space to not look cramped within the circle..
Analysis of Existing Products
Brand News (one of Moose Bloods influences) logo:
Contrast:
This logo has a lot of contrast with the orange/yellow main text and the
turquoise drop shadow.
Repetition:
The same pattern and colour is repeated throughout all of the primary
text, in addition to throughout all of the drop shadow text.
Alignment:
The text is aligned vertically, and centrally, and it also is completely
horizontal. Additionally, the shadow text is completely aligned.
Proximity:
The two lines of text are very near to each other, and the secondary
text reduces the amount of space between each letter. However, this
does not make the logo look too busy because there is a minimal
amount of elements that make up the logo in the first place.

Design Brief
The purpose of this project is to redesign a logo for the performing
band Moose Blood, which is minimalistic, unique, timeless, is personal to
Moose Blood, versatile, has a distinct colour palette, and a distinct
typographic style. From my research, I decided on some specific design
conventions that I will utilize in my logo.
Additionally, this logo will have to appeal to the bands target
audience, by incorporating British, emo, pop punk, and indie design
conventions. It is important to Moose Bloods target audience that they look
like a small band, by using organic, original shapes. Additionally, it is
important that they stick with their British identity by incorporating either a
traditional old English font, or colours from the British flag. Finally, they need
to represent their style of music (chill emo), through use of the colour black,
and bold text.
The logo that I design for Moose Blood will include an interpretation
of the name of the band, and also incorporate the above conventions.
Through this logo, I want to represent the bands indie nature, in addition to
their unique sound- which has emo roots, but is also quite relaxed and happy.

Design #1: This logo design is of the silhouette of the profile of a moose head,
filled with an image of a misty field. The band name, Moose Blood,
is across the middle of the head, and the bands first album
release date is written in roman numerals at the bottom of the
logo.
There is low contrast in this logo, but I think that that adds to the
chill and unoffending nature that Im trying to portray. There is
also very little repetition in this logo. The background is consistent,
but the only other two elements- two piece of text, use different
fonts. Alignment is used well in this logo, because all of the text is
strategically placed to fit within the moose profile. Proximity is also
used well because the two words that go together, Moose and
Blood are place close to one another, and the other textual
element is placed further away.
This logo is good because it looks extremely indie and has a
relaxed atmosphere about it, but is difficult to put in many
contexts, and the text inconsistencies also lowers the overall
quality of the logo.

Design #2:
These logo designs are made of the silhouette of a moose, over paint splatters. The paint
splatters took inspiration from the blood part of the bands name, as they were initially
blood spatters. However, I found that the red was too graphic, so I changed the colours to
grey, and now the pattern just looks like paint. The top logo is places on a pink guitar pick,
in order to reflect one of the bands main instruments. Additionally, this allowed a pink
colour, to tie into the bands blush time. Further, this allowed placement of the band
name and their first albums release date in roman numerals. The second logo is much
more minimalistic, as it is just a white moose silhouette over one large, dark grey paint
splatter, with smaller splatters surrounding it. This one has no text

The first logo has medium contrast, as the white and pink colours are both light shades.
The second logo has a lot of contrast, with the dark grey and totally white silhouette. The
first logo uses repetition well in the font used for all typography, and also the type of paint
splatter. The second logo does not use repetition, only because there are only 2 elements
in this logo. In the first logo, all elements are aligned by their centres. This ensures that the
logo looks neat, despite the random grey splatters. In the second logo, the silhouette is
directly in the centre of the splatter. The first logo is quite busy because all of the paint
splatters overlap one another, and they are all in close proximity to one another. The
second logo has a lot of negative space, just because there is no pattern.

These logos are good because they are versatile, in that they are contained in shapes.
However, the first one does not really reflect the bands personality, and the second long is
too simple, and not memorable or unique enough.

Design #3: This logo is made up of the words Moose Blood placed onto the
centre of a pink rectangle. On either side of the word Moose,
antlers extrude. Additionally, in the bottom right corner, the date of
the bands release date of their first album is written in roman
numerals. Lastly, a pattern of thin white hexagons overlays the
entire logo.
This logo utilises contrast, because the bold black typography and
antlers contrast the pink and white background extremely well.
There is repetition in the hexagon pattern, but there are two
different font choices used in this logo. Alignment is also utilised
well in this logo, as Moose and Blood are aligned perfectly.
Lastly, proximity is used very well in this logo because there is a lot
of negative space surrounding Moose Blood, which draws
attention to the band name, without making the logo too busy.
This logo is good in that it reflects the bands indie nature, in that it
uses a pastel pink, also the overall delicate nature of the logo- with
all of the outline fonts, the thin antlers, and the hexagons. However,
although these antlers add to the aesthetic of the logo, they
resemble deer antlers over moose antlers. Additionally, the roman
numerals are hard to read and do not match the overall design.

Design #4:
This logo is made up of a design of a stratocaster headstock and the profile of a moose
head. This represents both one of the most important instruments in the band, in
addition to the moose element of the band name. This design is contained in two
circles, giving the logo a connotation of a record, which also makes clear that the logo is
for a band. Around the outside of the circle, the band name, and the date of their first
albums release date are written.

This logo uses contrast extremely well because the pale pink and the black are very
different colours, and stand out against one another extremely effectively. This logo
uses repetition because the same font is used throughout the entire logo, and the
pattern within the moose head/headstock is a consistent line pattern. Finally, the circle
shape is also repeated throughout this logo, with the largest circle, inner circle, and two
small circle details on the left and right of the logo. Alignment is also used effectively in
this design because firstly, the moose head/headstock is aligned extremely well to fit
perfectly in the smaller circle. Additionally, the two small circle details are aligned across
the horizontal centre of the largest circle. Lastly, the text is aligned by their centres as
well. Lastly, proximity is used well in this logo because there is little negative space, but
it doesnt look too busy because elements take up a lot of space and there are not busy
patterns.

This logo is good in that it really reflects the bands musical priority. Additionally, the
black represents the hardcore and emo influences, while the pink represents the indie
influences. It is very versatile because of the simple pattern, colour scheme, and fact
that it is contained within a circle.

Chosen Design Justification:
Design #4 was chosen because it was the only
design to meet every single design specification.
Additionally, it is very unique, and offers a very
creative manipulation of elements. It also
represents the band well with the record style and
guitar headstock. It appeals to my target audience,
by using both emo and indie elements, like both
black and pink, a circle, and an image of an
instrument.
Lastly, it is extremely versatile. Firstly, it is contained
within a circle, so it can be placed into any context
easily. Second, it only uses 2 colours, one of which
is black, so it is easy to match to other colours in
other contexts. Thirdly, only one font is used, so the
logo can be used in many different contexts. Lastly,
the overall logo is simple enough to also match
other patterns on posters, websites, and other
merchandise.

EVALUATE
Evaluation Against Design Specs
My final design meets all of my design specs related to colour. Firstly, it has a clear colour palette of pink.
Additionally, it only uses a cool-toned pink, in addition to pure jet black. This means that the colour scheme of my logo is clear,
recognizable, and simple.

My design specs related to typographic details are all met in my final design. I chose to use the outline of a bold sans
serif font, inspired by Moose Bloods current branding and aesthetic. Additionally, I only utilized capital letters and roman numerals
throughout my design to match conventions I found in my research. Further, in order to keep my logo simple and memorable, I only
used a single font. Lastly, I did incorporate my band name into my logo. This is important because it will help people begin to
recognize their logo, as they arent popular enough to be recognizable through just a graphic just yet.

My final design also meets all of my design specs related to graphic elements. Firstly, it is contained within a circle. I
though that this was important because that means that it is extremely versatile and able to be used in many different contexts.
Lastly, my design also has a representation of a moose. This helps the logo and the band to stand out more and be more unique, in
addition to helping the logo have more meaning. I was able to incorporate moose antlers onto a Stratocaster headstock, in order to
both convey a common instrument used by the band, and the moose part of their band name.

In terms of spatial layout, my final logo only partially met my specification. My specification was that at least 50% of
the logo must be made up of plain space without any pattern or text. The final logo that I designed for versatile use for Moose Blood
(the black and white option) does meet this specification, but my final logo that I designed specifically for their Blush era does not.

Lastly, for conceptual and aesthetic details, my logo does meet all of my design specifications. It represents the band
by using the colour pink, related to their newest album, and the logo has themes of music with the use of a vinyl record like shape
and format, and the Stratocaster headstock. It also represents the band through the use of moose antlers, in addition to including
the release date of their first EP in roman numerals. I chose to use roman numerals because it is a convention often used in
graphics appealing to my target audience. Additionally, my logo is minimalist, and versatile because of its circular shape and also its
black and white option. My final logo also appeals to my target audience because I utilized many design conventions that appeal to
my target audience, like the colour black, organic shapes, and a bold font.
Improvements to Solution
My final logos could have been improved in multiple ways.
Firstly, one of my logos (the one designed for use in their Blush era),
did not meet my spatial layout design specification. In order to ensure that my
logo would truly be minimalistic, I created a specification stating that my logo
must have at least 50% made up of plain space without any pattern or text.
However, in my Blush logo, I filled the Stratocaster headstock/moose head
with a geometric line pattern. To improve upon my design, I should have
found a more creative way to use the space to keep the design looking
interesting but still minimalist.
Additionally, my logo could have used a couple more conventions to
appeal to my target audience. Although I used a number of conventions, I did
not use as many as I could have. For example, I did not include any
conventions that would appeal specifically to the bands very large British
demographic. I found that the use of bright reds and royal blues would appeal
to this demographic, in addition to old fashioned Old English fonts, and I used
neither in my final logo.
Ties to Global Context, Key Concepts, and Related Concepts
How do your two projects correlate to Personal and Cultural Expression, Communication, Form, Innovation, Markets and
trends, and Resources?

Both my projects correlate to personal and cultural expression because I designed them with my own personal design style,
and they were both manners in which I could express my designs within certain boundaries, and for a certain purpose.
Additionally, specifically for the logo design, I was able to design something for a band that holds genuine interest, and is
something that I care about.

My projects related to the key concept of communication, because they are both manners in which one can communicate
something through graphic representation. The stamp was a way of graphically communicating something of significance to
Canada, and celebrating its 150 year anniversary. The logo was designed in order to communicate the nature of the band,
and to interest their target audience.

Both projects also correlate to form, because I had to investigate and utilize many different forms in order to communicate
my ideas and themes well. For example, in my stamp, I used the iconic image of the Inuksuk in addition to the maple leaf to
really represent Canadian identity. In my logo, I used forms inspired by vinyl records, moose, and instruments, in order to
really demonstrate the bands true musical nature. My projects also related to innovation because I had to be innovative to
create updated, still currently relevant graphics, while still fulfilling their purposes. My projects also related to markets and
trends because I had to research the markets and trends of each project in order to design the one that would be the most
commercially successful. For example, I needed to find conventions that would ensure that the stamp that I designed would
appeal to my target audience, of the general Canadian citizen, and for the logo, I needed to research conventions that
would appeal the most to teens interested in the alternative/emo music scene. Lastly, my projects also relate to the related
concept of resources. I was able to use a number of resources in order to ensure that my designs were as successful as
possible. I used the application Illustrator to actually create my designs, and used my peers, my teacher, the Internet, and
the application of Spotify in order to conduct research and get feedback, so that my designs would be the best they could
be.
Connection to Statement of Inquiry
"Responsible designers can use graphic communication for purposes other than advertising.
Graphic Design is a powerful tool which when intelligently used to create meaning through
text and image combinations, can effectively communicate value and culture."
My stamp related to this statement of inquiry, because my stamp was designed in order to
commemorate Canadas 150 year anniversary. This is an extremely historical significant
event that will be celebrated this year. Specifically, a stamp can be used as a memento of
this event because not only is it traditional, but it is also something commonly used across
the country, exclusively by Canadians, and is also a common collectors item. The purpose of
this project was to create a meaningful graphic with Canadas historical significance in mind,
that will communicate the essence of Canadians and Canadian culture, through the use of
the number 150, the Inuksuk, a maple leaf, the word Canada, and Canadas years as a
country, 1867-2017.
My logo also related to this statement of inquiry because it is representative of a band itself.
Although it can be used for advertising, the essence of the band is reflected in this logo. The
nature of the band and the whole subculture that it is a part of it is a part of the logo, and
these things were actively thought of during the designing process. I was able to combine a
number of different concepts, like roman numerals, a bold outline of a font, the colour black,
a Stratocaster headstock, and a vinyl record, in order to effectively represent the
emo/alternative musical subculture.
IB Learner Profile Traits
Open-Minded:
I was able to demonstrate that I am an open-minded learner throughout both of these projects, because I
was able to experiment with several different styles and ideas. This learner profile trait was extremely
helpful because it meant that in the long-run, I would be able to experiment with and ultimately come up
with a better final design. I was open to different styles, and also was able to take the advice of my peers
and teachers very well and apply some of their ideas to my final designs.
Thinker:
I was able to demonstrate the IB learner profile trait of thinker throughout both of these projects. I had to
use several critical thinking skills to identify, select, and apply a number of relevant design conventions to
both graphic projects. I also had to think of manner in which I could represent either Canadian culture and
history, or an entire band and the subculture that theyre a part of, through a simple design. Because both
designs had to be relatively simple, the stamp because in real life, it is so small, and the logo because
logos should be minimalist and also easily applicable in a variety of different situations, it was difficult to
critically think and evaluate different images and text options that could be used in such selective designs.
Inquirer:
I demonstrated the IB learner profile trait of inquirer throughout the entire graphics unit. I was constantly
researching online, and asking my peers and teacher questions about graphics and utilization of Adobe
Illustrator, in order to learn as much as I could about the designing process and end product. This was
important because it helped me become much more knowledgeable about graphic design, and also
enabled me to create the best possible end products.
