This years Service Award recipient has been a cornerstone in Canandaigua for more than a
century and a half.
Established in 1859, the North Main Street mainstay employs 25 and offers a vast menu of
services, including programming for all ages, public computers, wifi, fax and copier services,
tech support, books and magazines in multiple formats, Ancestry.com and language learning
software.
I am very proud of the fact that we had 586 outside community groups take advantage of
our free meeting room space last year, said Executive Director Jenny Goodemote. Knowing
that the library is an integral part in making things happen in Canandaigua means a lot to
me.
And looking ahead, library leaders are working on a strategic plan and setting goals for the
next two years, based on information theyre gleaning from a community survey and several
focus groups, Library staff members are the number one reason Wood Library received this
award, Goodemote said.
When patrons compliment me about the library, the majority of the compliments are about
the friendly and accommodating people who work here, she said. Each and every day they
strive to give our patrons the best customer service possible. They truly enjoy working with
the public and it shows.
One of Wood Librarys core values can be summed up with one word: openness. That defines
who we are and how we want to be viewed as an organization, Goodemote said.
Not only does the library open the door to information and knowledge, but we are also open
to exploring new partnerships and new ideas.
People need to know that the Library is about more than just books, Goodemote said. There

Honored this year by the Chamber for tourism excellence is Finger Lakes Visitors Connection.
Established in 1984, part of the organizations mission is indeed a pleasure: to tell others why
the Chosen Spot could be their chosen spot, too.
Canandaiguas lifestyle is braggable, said FLVC President and CEO Valerie Knoblauch.
Its a great place for outdoor adventurists with its lakes, biking trails and special seasonal
amenities like Bristol Mountain, she said. And foodies can have a field day with fresh-from-
the-garden offerings from the New York Wine and Culinary Center and assorted internationally
themed restaurants.

MESSENGER POST MEDIA Cultural amenities are close at hand with CMAC (Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands
Performing Arts Center), Bristol Valley Theater and live music at night everywhere, she said.
Put that all together and this is a great place to live, work and play healthfully and
Superior Reach | Targeted Delivery happily, said Knoblauch.
Much of Finger Lakes Visitors Connection work is built up over time, she said. One area of
73 Buffalo Street Canandaigua NY 14424 ongoing success is the world-wide media attention FLVC brings to the region, Knoblauch said.

FLVCs number one asset is its people, Knoblauch said.

importantly, beyond our paid staff, are our partners who help us promote. All those frontline
employees that meet and greet visitors are one of our areas best assets.
At the core of FLVC is an unrelenting desire to have fun, remain focused on customer service,
be quality- and value-driven, and be creative or as Knoblauch says, disruptive.
People may not realize that we were the first county tourism promotion agency in the Finger
Lakes region, outside of the major cities of Rochester and Syracuse, said Knoblauch. In
1984, this idea of a specialist in tourism economic development and promotion was novel.
Today, every county has someone in this role.
At FLVC, variety really is the spice of life.
No day is the same and I love that, said Knoblauch. Every day is a learning experience of
some new aspect of marketing or economic development.
At the end of each day, success is measured when FLVC staff can relay a story about a positive
partner experience, or a visitor tale of what they loved about our area, or by receiving a
notification that our area is receiving special media coverage that can be passed on to the
industry.
Tourism has gained such recognition in our area, and I feel while every day its hard to see
how that days efforts may have contributed to it, its sort of like the stock market, said
Knoblauch. Were in for the long haul, not the day to day ups and downs.

The fuel that keeps Canandaigua FCU staff going is knowing that each day they may have the
chance to relieve a members financial worry. One of the greatest anxiety-builders in our society
is financial stress, said Fitzgerald. Not everyone has financial understanding. It can feel like a
minefield for some. Providing solutions to what may seem to be insurmountable problems is very
rewarding.
And at the end of the day, Canandaigua FCU employees know when they have done their jobs well.
Sometimes it may be a thank you for a simple routine transaction, and sometimes it can be a thank
you for compassion, said Fitzgerald. When you work with peoples finances, you are present for
the everyday parts of their lives, and for the wonderful celebrations and the great losses of their
lives.

Honored this year by the Chamber for retail excellence is Canandaigua Federal Credit Union
#16176.
It has a unique connection with the Canandaigua Area Chamber both have called the
picturesque A-frame at 3210 Eastern Blvd. their home. Before moving to Main Street, the
Chamber was based at the chalet-style structure now occupied by Canandaigua FCU. We
believe that our services are how we best serve our community, said CFCU Operations
Manager Deedee Fitzgerald. We want the community to know we are here for them.
Established in 1964, the Canandaigua FCU has made a special effort under the leadership of
CEO Barry Stilwell to reach out to its younger members, creating events around their interests
and financially supporting their schools and extracurricular activities. The goal: early financial
awareness. An ongoing focus is providing loan opportunities to members who may have had
difficulty in qualifying elsewhere, Stilwell said.
Like other award recipients, the Canandaigua FCU credits its well-trained staff of six for
much of its success. We have a wonderful team here, said Fitzgerald. The credit union
philosophy of people helping people is alive here. The responsibility we have to help our
members is taken very seriously.
Services include savings and checking accounts, certificates of deposit, IRAs, personal loans,
mortgages, online home banking, credit and debit cards, wire transfers, mobile banking, life
and disability insurance, gap insurance, student loans, college scholarships, discount movie
and theme parks tickets, notary services, Popmoney person-to-person payments, account to
account banking and onsite 24 ATM.
Having knowledge and understanding of the services we provide is most important in offering
a community service, said Fitzgerald. The manner in which we provide it then allows us to
reach those we wish to. We create an atmosphere that gives people the opportunity to tell
their story. We are dedicated to helping our members improve their lives.
