INTERCONNECTION TECHNIQUES IN ELECTRONICS

INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL STUDENT CONTEST

LOCAL STAGE, 26th EDITION
March 30, 2017, SUCEAVA

A. General description of the project

The project goal is to design and generate layout and fabrication files for a 5-port Ethernet Switch,
with the schematic presented in the Annex 1.

B. General requirements and specifications

The design order is mandatory: libraries, schematic design, transfer procedure, layout design
GEN-001
and post processing activities.
GEN-002 All dimensions should be considered in metric system.
GEN-003 The project will be created using any CAD system accepted in the contest.

C. Schematic design specifications (70 points)

SCH-001 Any flat or hierarchical organization of the schematic project is accepted.
A new library with the surname (family name) of the contestant will be created and will
SCH-002
contain all the components that are not in the CAD software libraries.
The schematic should be drawn in a clear manner, e.g.: all references and values should have
SCH-003
proper size and orientation, un-necessary crossings should be avoided.

D. Layout design specifications (257 points)

PCB-001 All components footprints are specified in the schematic from Annex 1.
PCB-002 Components footprints guidelines are specified in the attached datasheets.
All ICs and other components that can be wrong assembled during the orientation must have
PCB-003
a silkscreen marking for their reference pin (example: pin 1 for the ICs).
PCB layout guidelines are given in Figure 1. In the figure are provided the locations for the
PCB-004 Ethernet ports, power connector, SPI connector and LEDs. The PCB will be fixed into an
enclosure using 4 mounting holes.
The screws that will fix the PCB will have 2mm in diameter without copper pad, will be non-
plated and will have non-placement and non-routing rules defined for a diameter of 4mm
PCB-005
around them. All the mounting holes will be placed at a distance of 2mm (on X and Y axis)
from each corner.
PCB-006 The functional blocks shall be respected according to the schematic design.
The layout design should take into consideration a 4-Layer PCB with the following Stack-Up:
PCB-007
TOP-GND (0.17mm) FR408 Prepreg with r =3.66, GND-VCC (1.19mm) FR408 CORE with r

= 3.66, VCC-BOTTOM (0.17mm) FR408 Prepreg with r = 3.66. The copper thickness will be
35m for VCC-GND layers and 18m for the rest of the layers (TOP and BOTTOM). Minimum
copper width for all the tracks is 0.2mm and the clearance is 0.2mm for all situations
(connections, electrical pads and components) except of the impedance controlled tracks.
The Ethernet connections from Magnetics to IC and to the output connectors will be routed in
PCB-008 order to maintain the 90Ohm differential impedance matching and will be placed on the right
side of the board, to avoid any interference that can occur from the components around.
All the power tracks will be routed only on the specific layer, except of the decoupling
capacitors connections that will be routed to maintain their purpose. The power connection
PCB-009 between the corresponding plane and any component on the board shall be made with via
and short connections (maximum 1mm). Power tracks will be dimensioned in such a way to
handle 1A, taking into consideration a temperature rise of 100C.
Vias on the board will be 0.3mm drill and 0.6mm pad diameter for whole board, including
PCB-010
power vias. Only through hole vias are allowed.
Vias used in the design shouldnt use thermal-relief area. Only connecting pads of the
PCB-011
components will have thermal-relief areas for easy de-soldering process.
Decoupling non-polarized capacitors shall be placed as close as possible to the related pin.
PCB-012
The connection from the IC pin to the first capacitor on the branch will have maximum 3mm.
The board will have only global fiducial markers placed in the right place and in a proper
PCB-013
number, according to IPC7351 standard.
All ground connections will be made with ground plane on the GND layer and also on both
PCB-014 sides of the PCB. The components will be linked to the ground connection with one via placed
as close as possible to the component ground pad (maximum 1mm).
All the component designators will be visible on the PCB and will be 0.7mm in height and
PCB-015
0.15mm in width.
On the non-electric Silkscreen Layer will be placed the TIE2017-SV as a logo text, having 3mm
PCB-016
in height with ARIAL font.

E. Fabrication specifications (18 points)

Note: generation of fabrication files is accepted only with100% routing of the board
FAB-001 Two bill of materials (BOMs) should be generated in two different formats (text and excel
format), one for the test purpose and one for mass production of the board.
FAB-002 PCB manufacturing files should be generated for mass production and for the assembly line.
FAB-003 Different files for plated and non-plated holes should be generated for this project.
