Diet :A special course of food to which one restricts oneself, either to lose weight or for medical

reasons.

Calorie : a unit of heat used to indicate the amount of energy foods produce in the human body

that is equal to 1000 calories.

Macronutrient :Nutrients that form the major portion of your consumption and contribute

energy to your diet.

Micronutrient :A substance, such as a vitamin or mineral, that is essential in minute amounts

for the proper growth and metabolism of a living organism.

DIV (daily value) :The percent on Nutrition Labels that is a guide to nutrients in one serving of

food.

Protein : a substance found in foods (such as meat, milk, eggs, and beans) that is an important

part of the human diet.

Carbohydrates :the sugars, starches and fibers found in fruits, grains, vegetables and milk

products.

Saturated Fat :is a fat in which the fatty acids all have single bonds.

Unsaturated Fat :which there is at least one double bond within the fatty acid chain

Trans Fat :are a type of unsaturated fats that are uncommon in nature but became commonly

produced industrially from vegetable fats for use in margarine, snack food, packaged baked

goods and frying fast food


Minerals : the chemical elements required by living organisms, other than the four elements

carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen present in common organic molecules.

Nutrients :a substance that provides nourishment essential for growth and the maintenance of

life.

Cholesterol :a compound of the sterol type found in most body tissues, including the blood and

the nerves.

Fiber :you can eat, is found in fruits, vegetables, and grains.

Added sugars :sugars and syrups that are added to foods or beverages when they are processed

or prepared.

Organic :foods produced by methods that comply with the standards of organic farming.

Whole grain :cereal grain that contains the germ, endosperm, and bran, in contrast to refined

grains, which retain only the endosperm.

Fructose : is a simple ketonic monosaccharide found in many plants, where it is often bonded to

glucose to form the disaccharide sucrose


Omega 3 and Omega6 Fatty acids :are important components of cell membranes and are

precursors to many other substances in the body such as those involved with regulating blood

pressure and inflammatory responses.

Pasteurization :is a hundred-year-old process that destroys pathogens through simple heat, and

is best known for its role in making milk and juices safe for consumption.

Metabolism :describe all chemical reactions involved in maintaining the living state of the cells

and the organism

BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) : is the amount of energy expended while at rest in a neutrally

temperate environment which requires about twelve hours of fasting

BMI (Body Mass Index) :person's weight in kilograms (kg) divided by his or her height in

meters squared.

Malnutrition :A lack of proper nutrition

Obesity :the condition of being grossly fat or overweight.

Vitamin A :group of unsaturated nutritional organic compounds that includes retinol, retinal,

retinoic acid, and several provitamin A carotenoids.


Vitamin C :is a water-soluble vitamin, meaning that your body doesn't store it.

Vitamin D :refers to a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for enhancing intestinal

absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate, and zinc.

Calcium :the chemical element of atomic number 20, a soft gray metal.

Folic Acid :a vitamin of the B complex, found especially in leafy green vegetables, liver, and

kidney.
