William Deresiewiczs Excellent Sheep Is a Critical and Creative Look at
Whats Wrong with Elite US Universities and What They Should Be

Theres no recent book thats sparked more controversy on the role and
quality of higher education at elite US institutions than Excellent Sheep:
The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life.
Its 2014 release touched o a firestorm of debate as to the true value
and core meaning of a quality liberal arts education, a debate that
continues to rage in the halls of academia and beyond.

A Columbia University graduate and Yale English professor (1998-2008),

William Deresiewiczs basic premise is that the USs most highly
regarded universities are oering an inferior educational experience that
values soul-deadening hoop jumping and grade chasing over
independent thought. In addition to attacking these institutions for
fostering a culture that recruits and coddles risk-averse hyper-achievers,
he takes on several related topics including elite university admissions,
student wellbeing, and artificially narrowed career paths. The second half of Excellent Sheep
amounts to a passionate argument for the importance of a quality liberal arts experience in the
modern world, one predicated on independent cross-disciplinary thinking and increased global
perspective and understanding.

Whether you agree or disagree with its many assertions and prescriptions, Excellent Sheep will
challenge your beliefs and deepen your understanding of what an elite university experience can
and should be.

Quotes from Excellent Sheep:

Practical utility is not the ultimate purpose of a liberal arts education. Its ultimate purpose is to
help you to learn in the widest and deepest sense, beyond the requirements of work and career: for
the sake of citizenship, for the sake of living well with others, above all, for the sake of building a
self that is strong and creative and free.

On Amy Chua, author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother:

In Chinese thinking, she (Chua) explains, the child is the extension of the self. Parental
narcissism does not get more explicit than that. But Chua does not finally seem like a parent at all.
Still an extension of her own parents, forever feeling their eyes upon her, incapable of questioning
the values with which she was raised, she remains an eternal child, insatiable in her demands for
love and attention. As for her own children, the fact that one has gotten into Harvard now is not a
validation of her methods. It is a condemnation of Harvards, and of the system as a whole. Of
course her daughter got into Harvard: that is exactly the kind of parenting the system rewards. That
is exactly what is wrong with it.

Inventing your life is not about becoming an artist, an activist or an entrepreneur or any other
particular thing. It is simply about finding your way to work that is right for you.
