How to Plan Effective Recessed Lighting
Recessed fixtures can provide three
basic types of lighting: General
Lighting; Accent Llghting; Wal
Washing. lvlany spaces may use all
three types and some only one or
two. A well-planned lighting scheme
matches the proper type of lighting
with the intended use of the space.
General Lighting
Fixed beams, generally medium to
wide. provide an overall spread of
ilumination that creates a soft
luminosity ihroughout a space.
General lighting can be provided
by either incandescent o compact
fluorescent sou rces.

Accent lighting can be the rnost
flexlble, most effective tool for
achievino creative control in
lighting.
Easily adlustable, both
horizontally and vert ically, accent
lights direct the light so that it

Adiustable accent lights can also
provide down lighting from sloped
ceilin g s.
These fixtures accept a wide
range oi incandescent lamps, in a
choice of intensities and beam
spreads. some fixt ures are

for operaiion with low voltage
lamps.
Standard Voltage Lighting
The standard line voltage lamps
most commonly used are the
reflectorized, long'lif e "R" and
"PAF" types in wattages from 30W
1o 300W. These lamps are ower in
cost but generally produce a wider,
less tightly controlled light beam
and offer a smaller selection of
bea'n spreads than low volrage
lamps.
Standard voltage fixtures are also
more economical because they do
not require special operat ino
equipment such as the
translormers required by low
voltage units to reduce line voltage
(120v.) to operating levels (5.5v. or
12v .\.
Among the newer standard
voltage lamps are 90W PAF-38
types, which have an inner
tungsien-halogen capsu Ie des ig ned
to provide increased light output

These lamps provide as much
usable tight as a conventional 150W
flood or spol and retain their initial
brig htness throughout their life.
Low Voltage Lighting
Low voltage lighting offers many
advantages as compared to
standard voltage lighting: a more
accurate control and broader
selection of bean.r spreads; a
whiter, briohter liahi that improves

color rendition; !ess radiated heat:
more iniensity per watt; and lower
overall operating costs.
Low voltage lamps have smaller,
more compact f ilaments than
standard voltage lamps, enabling
them to behave as true "point
sources" which precisely gather
and direct light output.
This accurate control produces a
very tight, well-defined beam that
illuminates the target without
waste{ul or distracting spill light...
and creates the sharp contrasts of
highliqht and shadow needed io
focus attention on the target.
Low voltage lamps are very
energy-ef{ective since they produce
more beam intensity per watt than
standard voltage lamps. Very little
light is wasted, so that less wattage
can be used to do a specific
