Parents and phone use

The majority of a childs personality is built off of what is presented to him or her

at early ages. This means that a child will grow up with the same interaction and social

skills as they were exposed to by their parents. The main problem when parents use their

cell phones in front of their children is that the parent and just like a child is proned to do,

will lose focus on the interaction that was started and will not have an impact on the

childs mind as intended. This short but very important loss of communication will

negatively impact educational development for the child which will hinder the literacy

success of him or her. The quantity of interactions will not positvely effect the children if

it is being done with poor quality.

Many parents might not realize, but language skills are a very important predictor

of later student success. Language skills are the number one key to social and academic

success. Just as it is stated in the article Kids Language Skills Hindered When Parents

Check Their Phones, Study Finds says that The complexity of words used in a

conversation and the nature of that conversation turn out to be eritically important in

predicting academic success. There are certain words and complex situations in the

nature of a conversation, so if a child has an interruption in the middle of processing an

interaction, the child will lose his or her train of thought and will lack that one important

skill growing up. If there is constant back and fourth communication, the child will
develop that skill and implement it towards academics also rather than having cut-offs

during conversations and forgetting elements of the interaction.

It really does not matter overall whether a child comes from a low- income

family or middle-income background. It is purely based on the interaction of the parents

to the children to predict how well children will do in kindergarden and beyond. Even the

slightest cut-off from a back and fourth discussion from a parent to a child can hinder

language development. If a parent teaches a child to have poor interaction and social

skills, the child will definately pick up those negative skills as well. This is why I believe

that the problem when parents use cell phones in front of the children will strongly hinder

the social and academic development of children.
