Geometry/ Period 5
Throughout the 2016 - 2017 school year, I have learned many things in Mrs.
Hazlewoods Geometry class. I have learned many aspects of geometry that I hadnt known
before. During the first semester, I learned the proper notation for segments, lines, points, etc. I
also learned how to use a compass and memorized basic vocabulary terms such as theorem,
postulate, and conjecture. Towards the beginning of the first semester I learned all about
transformations and the properties of rigid motions. I also advanced my knowledge of symmetry
and learned about triangles and their properties. Another topic that the class focused on was
parallel and perpendicular lines. From triangles, the class moved to quadrilaterals and their
properties. I learned about parallelograms and their relationships to rhombuses, rectangles, and
squares. I also learned about kites and trapezoids. Another thing I learned was how to make a
proof. I feel proud of myself for learning this because it was very difficult for me when the class
first started the unit. At the beginning of the second semester, the class moved back to triangles
and the Pythagorean Theorem. I then learned some trigonometry and was taught about cosine,
sine, and tangent. I then learned about circles and the terms that were attached to that unit. I now
know about arcs, central angles, inscribed angles, chords, tangents, and secants.
I liked many things about this class. I liked being able to do my homework online instead
of carrying my book home. I liked that I had a few days to complete the assignment and I could
always see when it was due. I also liked that I was easily able to understand the topics from the
beginning of the year. I was able to sit next to my friends throughout the year, which was really
helpful because I was able to ask for help without feeling self conscious. Another thing I liked
about this class was that Mrs. Hazlewood allowed us to know her story, which let us know how
much she cares for all of her students. Many students also participated throughout the year,
which was nice. Another thing I liked was that I was able to occasionally bring a note card for a
test. This led to me being able to use my knowledge of the concept during the test instead of
having to memorize the things that werent important. This class has also allowed me to learn
how geometry relates to the real world. Geometry relates to the real world in many ways. Every
building on Earth has been created thanks to geometry. From finding how much materials is
needed by finding the perimeter to the actual construction. The volume of a space is found before
installing a pool or garage. Additionally the surface area is found for building walls to determine
the amount of materials that is needed to cover that area. Geometry is also commonly used in
sports and videogames. In many sports, players need to determine the arc that they need to create
with their equipment to score a point. Sports fields and the shapes that compose them are also
created and measured by the use of geometry. Additionally, the shape of the equipments effects
the game immensely. In videogames and cartoons, shapes fit together to create designs and
characters. Proximity, movement and depth are also used to determine somethings placement. In
cuisine, many foods are shaped differently for different purposes. For example, cookie cutters
design the shapes of cookies and the curve of a taco shell allows it to hold the ingredients. All in
all, geometry is a very important thing which is commonly utilized in the real world.
