Topic: Titrimetric Analysis

Aim:

Instructions:

Solution A was made by adding 6.00g of a metal oxalate (MC2O4) in dilute

sulphuric acid and making up to one dm3 with pure water.

You are also provided with solution B which contains 2.38 g of manganate
(VII) ions [MnO4 - ] per dm3, a supply of 1.0 mol/dm3 sulphuric acid and a
solution of the sulphate of M.

You are required to determine the relative atomic mass of the metal M.

Pipette 25.0 cm3 of the Solution A into a conical flask; add an

approximately equal volume of dilute sulphuric acid using a measuring
cylinder. Heat the mixture to approximately 60 C and titrate the mixture
with Solution B.

Repeat the titration until consecutive volume readings within 0.1 cm3 of each
other are obtained. Record your results in the table below.

Results:

Carry out the following test on the solution of the sulphate of M.

Experiment Observation Deduction
Heat 1 cm3 of MSO4 to
60 C in a test tube. Add
Solution B drop by drop.

Calculate:

1. Determine the average volume of solution B reacting with 25 cm3 of

solution A
23.4 cm3+ 23.5 cm3
Average Volume = 2 = 23.45 cm3

2. The moles of manganate (VII) ions reacting

3. Write an equation for the reaction between C2O4 irons and MnO4
ions

5. The moles of C2O4 present in 1000 cm3 of solution A

1000 c m3 1.1725 x 1 03 moles

X= 25 c m3 = 0.0469 moles

6. The molar mass of MC2O4

0.0469 moles : 6g
1mole : x

6 grams 1 mole
X= 0.0469 moles = 127.93 128 g / mol

7. The molar mass of M

Molar mass of m:

M + 2 ( 12 ) + 4 ( 16 )=128

M =12888

M = 40 g/mol
